Dude... DM has already positioned us to win at least one title if Yao hadn't gone down against LA. Then transitioned from having to ride out Yao's contract, etc...an agony of forever for us..while Les set in stone his business deals overseas.Les didn't want to rebuild....He charged Daryl with piecing it together on the run starting with a Rockem Sockem robot game...Kevin was brought in to teach/coach/recruiter during the aforementioned pretense at a rebuild...which included not signing Goran... opting for the PR Bear.(gotta keep those Far East business ties)..And JB isn't the guy that's leading us to the promised land...We're a work in progress..chill. He's done a miraculous/masterful job. So, Les...and everyone else, You're damn lucky to have the wizard at the helm.
Yeah he knows what he is doing. Don't let the last few years of Kobe nostalgia and sympathy Lakers have towards him confuse you. Dude has GMed winning teams and will create another one shortly after the corpses of Kobe is gone
RC? How much of that is Pops? I say "ok" Riley.... Hall of Fame executive Myers... Okay Kupchak? No Ainge? Ehh he got Allen and KG, but hasn't done anything in years... Debatable. Ferry? No Presti? Debatable but no. So out of roughly 30 teams we are talking approximately 5-6 better (giving you the benefit of the doubt on Presti/Ainge? That tells me you should probably keep your GM.
Well, never did I say we should fire him (emotion talk aside) just yet. I'm just saying he is over-rated as many here have him as a unanimous top 3 GM who can do almost no wrong To me he is not a top 5-7 Gm and has some severe flaws. If he doesn't address them, he will probably be gone if Cyberx is to be trusted
Why is it so hard to understand that you have to be held accountable at some point. If you followed soccer you knew Mourinho was a legend at Chelsea, England where coaches had a tad of GM duties (managers) He got sacked twice and he is one of the best in business but too stubborn for his own good. It does not matter how good you are once you lost your players. At some point you just have to stop dumping players and the guy responsible will have to get fired or step down on his own. With Morey I hope he realizes this and owns up to it, then start over new but with new found humility. That is of course Alexander turns a blind eye onto his mess of a season.
(Thats 7, asked for 8 but its cool) All the guys in bold won titles. Even MULTIPLE titles. Plenty valid to rate them highest I really don't see how Danny Ferry can be rated as absolutely better than Morey. He inherited Lebron James in Cleveland in the EAST, thats already an easy road to finals. And the Cavs underachieved considering their reg season records, thats why Lebron even left for Miami in the first place. Let's not forget that he is NOT EVEN PRESENTLY A GM. Presti got Kevin Durant after Portland screwed up picking Greg Oden. He absolutely gets credit for Russell Westbrook & Serge Ibaka. There's other question marks in his record where it taints his overall success. Morey inherited Tmac and Yao, yes. Though after they broke down, he had to lure in premiere talent solely through asset building, creativity and persistence. Morey has never had a high draft pick. Oddly still, I would put Masai Ujiri on the list. If you replace Ferry with Ujiri, thatd still put Morey out the top 7. The point is, after a small handful of title winning GMs, every other GM actually is "overrated". (And yeah, saying Morey is the unquestionable best in the biz can look like fanboy'ism)
Morey is the only GM that gets talked about as a top 5 GM yet has not won anything yet, that's what makes him very overrated. Terms like "in morey we trust" and "get it done Morey" don't help either.
I think he should go. This team needs a new direction, im hopeful Les sees that, especially if he wants a wining product.
How many of those top Gms degrade coaching or push their own philosophy? Who barks the loudest? Heres my top ****ty front office organizations. Feel free to add more. Sacramento. Fired a good coach last year because they wanted Cousins to shoot 3s. Chicago. Front office gets along with no one. Friction with Thibs and Rose. Rockets. Cancerous entitled attitude that metastized from Morey to our role players. Philadelphia. Wtf are they doing?
Morey has done his job. We have talent on the squad. Only thing we need is a system and players who follow it and give effort on a consistent effort. Only possible thing Morey can do is hire a coach and the prospects of hiring a longterm successful coach mid season are slim. It's basically Thibs or nobody, IMO. I don't think we should have fired McHale to begin with. Not a few weeks into the season. McHale could have gotten us this far, nothing against Bickerstaff.
What makes you think Elie is such a good coach? Because he hit some big shots for your favorite team??? McHale hit some big shots and won a few championships. I don't see how a fan could really know how good any assistant coach is based on the little info we have to go on. At least, it's nice Wall said good things about Cassell.
At some point Morey does need to be held accountable, but the grass isn't always greener. Firing people just because he hasn't done as well as you would like is a bad idea. The Rockets have clearly been one of the 5-10 best run franchises, and even now we are in good shape to make changes if we want next year. I give Morey one more chance to build something new around Harden. If his stubbornness leads us to the exact same problems then I will say for sure he is the problem. That problem being that coaching and system have no value.
Too bad you cannot let go of the owner. He is the bigger problem but yep Morey is part of the problem. Morey goes before Les is selling.
That was just from the top of my head And yes if have Ujiri on par with Morey maybe even better But my point stands. He is not a top 5-7 GM and far from one of the best as often mentioned here Overall I think we agree here
I also have come to believe we need someone new. I would love a shot of basketball through the organization. New GM (more NBA roots) and a new coach. Sign Thibs and let him get an early start with Harden this summer.
He's a good GM who thinks and acts like he's better than what he is. Yes he's built this team without tanking. Yes he's gave us a great roster this year on paper. But his insistence that coaching doesn't matter, his coddling of James Harden, his arrogance towards other GM's all have put a negative energy around our organization. I just wish he would sit back and stay behind the scenes at times. Him being on twitter constantly just doesn't look good. In order for us to succeed Morey needs to hire a competent coach to run the team HIS way not Morey's. Then Morey needs to allow his staff to run his twitter. Last he needs to stop coddling Harden and give him a hard stance on his effort.
RC - no argument there Ainge - He was able to swing the KG/Allen/Rondo deals ( i think Rondo was under his watch) and been able to rebuild a young team with a lot of picks after blowing it up pretty quickly. I do like him Riley - hard to disagree, but i think his old school tactics will fail him with the newer generation. He had less to do with trying to put the "big 3" together compared to Ainge's creation in Boston. To his credit though he did whatever he could to clear the books to do so. Myers - I cant give him credit for Curry since Curry was drafted before he took over the GM duties. Finding Green and Ezeli and potentially Looney in the future (what can I say I am always gonna love my Bruins) were huge steals for him. Thompson and Barnes no doubt were key but felt both of these guys fell to the Warriors and they simply took BPA, but to their credit they did that. The transactions afterwards though were big - Bogut, Iggy, Livingston, Barbosa, Speights -- he has been a very very good GM. I would easily rank him top 5 in the league. only major caveat would be how much of an influence does one of the GOAT GMs in West have in all of this? Kupchak - disagree big time. He hasnt really drafted well - Jury is still out on Randle and Russell of course but the past picks havent been completely the best. He has made some good moves in acquiring Nash/Howard for very little but those were almost no brainer moves. He lucked into the Gasol trade thanks to West. Right now I would say that he is an above average GM not top 8 - a lot will be determine how the team fares going forward. Despite the lure of LA he hasnt been able to attract many free agents lately. Ferry - He has rebuilt that Hawks team quickly, but to me they look to be the post Melo Nuggets. Great amount of talent, good coach but no superstar to take them to the next level. Result? 50 win team but not considered a threat to win the title. Presti - I think when it comes to drafting I want Presti to be my GM - he has drafted some really good talent. But the other things like trades and signings he is below par. This has nothing to do with the Harden trade either (though that makes a huge black mark on his resume) But the subsequent moves he has done havent really done too much and the best players on that team are still the guys he drafted or were on the team when he took over (Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, Adams, Collison) Kanter was giving a huge deal and honestly while the guy can score with the best of them he brings nothing on the defensive end which is a huge problem IMO. On the above list the guys I would take above Morey would be: RC, Ainge, Myers and considering the situation right now the Rockets are in with having two stars --- Riley.
