It's was more of George Lucas's script that was awful. Even the likes of Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman gave ****ty performances with the dialogue they were given.
I think it was more of George Lucas' poor directing that doomed those films. If you watch the new Star Wars flick then go back and watch the 3 prequel films, they look like amateur hour.
It was an overreliance on unnecessary CGI. The new film looks better because they used actual locations. Virtually every "set" in the prequels was a blue screen, even for stuff that didn't need to be (like Palpetine's office in Attack of the Clones).
Somewhat true, but JJ Abrams is also a vastly more talented director/cinematographer. His shots are beautiful. (Except for that last shot at the end, that was stupid).
No way Luke is the main character going forward. Force Awakens sets up the franchise for a new generation of fans and new characters for them to love. Rey, Finn, Poe, Ren, BB8...they will be carrying the story forward. Now Luke will have a bigger role, but more in a Obi-Wan way than anything. As for Rey and Ren. Abrams seemed to very clearly set these two on a path in this film, and nothing that I saw led me to believe that either could turn away from their respective paths. In fact what was interesting is that Ren was conflicted between the light and dark side of the force, but in the complete opposite way Luke was. Now maybe he does come back to the light side, but I don't see Rey, the first lead-female character with a strong connection to the force, turning. Maybe she brings him back, and together they defeat a much more powerful foe in Snoke, who's role is still a mystery.
Look at the very 1st one from 1977 The Storyline . . . and this newest one looks like amateur hour . . . cause it basically retold the same story looked like a hack job by comparison Rocket River
Disagreed... I'd focus on the newer characters and the hidden-clues/mystery surrounding their backgrounds (including the supreme leader).... much further away from the original plot of the original movie. But yes... if you're going to associate good guys destroying an evil faction/super-weapon as being the "exact" same story... then you're going to be in for a disappointment.
I greatly disagree, the newest one looked better then all of the prequels and ROTJ, it was arguably better than the original. I'd put only ESB ahead of it.
By that logic, Return of the Jedi would fall in the category of hack job or amateur hour. But in reality, THAT'S HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO MAKE A STAR WARS FILM!! It wasn't laziness or coincidence. They needed to return to the original roots of the whole space saga and use real characters with real emotion, throwing back to the original storyline... Not three prequels of terrible exposition and explanation.
Spoiler Youth from Sand Planet Finds Druid that leads them to rebels to help destroy planet destroying device . . . .only BIGGER yea. . . pretty familiar It might have been better had I not seen A NEW HOPE Being that I have .. .it is VERY derivative to the point of being a hack job It is too close to the original . . . . Same Storylines .. . different names Rocket River
It's supposed to be similar. Half the point is the cyclical nature of things. Did you miss the “I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people" line? Also, in the Star Wars universe you have to expect similar themes. You make it sound like it was some accident that things were reminiscent of the original when that was the entire point.
It was terrible. Return of the Jedi ended the original trilogy so well I can't get around to how the First Order formed and the new Republic's army is called the Resistance? What's up with that? It needed a lot of scenes explaining how things came to be like the beginning scene in The Fellowship of the Ring; it was too character centric and I found the new chars pretty plain, at best. It just seems like a very antiquated sci-fi setting. There's been a lot of new sci-fi flicks and other material since SW that just seem more believable; I can give Oblivion (Tom Cruise) as a really solid sample.
First Order = remnants of empire. New Republic = same. Resistance = separate faction led by members of new republic + Leia. Its new republic without the politics and bureaucracy, almost like a PMC.
The droid didn't lead them to do anything... the droid merely contained a map for Luke. She also isn't from the sand planet... but was left there intentionally for some reason (a yet to be revealed important background story that is not contained in the OT). In fact, those similarities you mentioned very well could have intentionally been done simply to provide some superficial parallels for the more simple-minded viewer... in reality, they could have made her place of living "anywhere", but they intentionally chose a desert location.
So are they currently shooting the 2 sequels as we speak? Or are they waiting for the result of each movie before making the next? That would suck and make our wait much longer.
I agree that it's essentially a 40 year reboot. A general rule is that sequels aren't as good as the originals. This one is not disappointing by far. For me, it's a movie fueled by nostalgia and great action rather than adding something unique to your long established memories. I'm sure (hope) the next two will add upon it and be completely different than the originals. That Abrams took a beloved franchise and satisfied most of its fans is no easy task. Definitely not a hack job.
Just like the hobbit. If you compare the hobbit to the first LOTR movie it's basically scene by scene the same movie but different characters and storyline How does this b**** pick up a light saber and defeat the new darth Vader on day one
the next one is supposed to come out may 2017, but arent they also doing all these side-story movies like one about han solo and one about boba fett? i see a lot of speculation about rey turning to the darkside, but what if its luke who does? that would be a twist of shyamalanian proportions.
Not only is there a trilogy movie coming out every other year, there are "anthology" movies coming out in the other years: 2015: Episode VII The Force Awakens 2016: Rogue One 2017: Episode VIII 2018: Untitled Han Solo Anthology film 2019: Episode IX 2020: Untitled Boba Fett Anthology film Braces yourselves
