They (JJ & Disney) will probably use the plot device that was used in Terminator: Genysis where the events that occurred in the prequels existed in a now defunct time line that occurred when a Romulan mining ship went through a wormhole and emerged to attack the Republic thereby killing all of the Jedi (big and little children). This turns Anakin Skywalker into a rebellious malcontent who drinks his life away in a cantina and hence does not become the Jedi knight who becomes Darth Vader. As a result, the timeline of the prequels (I, II, III) vanishes and the real Star Wars universe starts with A New Hope. Hasta La Vista...maybe?
While that is true and Disney stated that right off the bat but they also clarified that statement a couple days later that they wouldn't hesitate to include aspects of the old EU by taking storylines, plot, characters, and such from it and adapting it for their own means. Basically they casted it off so they could use it and not be locked down by fans expectations of sticking exactly to the source material. That said you can already tell they have done this to some extent in little things and a few big things as well such as characters. When it comes to Kylo Ren Spoiler he seems to be some amalgamation of two EU bad guys who were once good guys and struggled with that pull from good to bad and vice versa. The characters they seemed to take alot from were Kyp Durron and Jacen Solo. As for Rey Spoiler she seems to be a take on two characters as well in Jaina Solo (Jacen's twin sister) and Ben Skywalker (who is Luke's son) when it comes to the characteristics she has displayed so far. Also when it comes to the map and R2D2 Spoiler JJ Abrams has told us how he came into possession of the big portion of the map. Link: http://www.ew.com/article/2015/12/2...-question-about-r2-d2-star-wars-force-awakens Here is a condensed version if you don't want to click the link. If you listen to Kylo Ren when he is talking to Rey he reveals the First Order also has the map that R2D2 has as well. They had it because of their access to the Empire's old data banks who took it from the Jedi when the Republic fell. R2D2 came into possession of the map in the first Star Wars movie when he was plugged into the first Death Star and downloaded the info then. The reason the map to the first Jedi Temple was incomplete was that the Jedi intentionally left it out apparently in case of something like the fall of the Republic took place. *This next part isn't in the article* (How Lor San Tekka came into possession of the missing map piece is anyone's best guess. Many are speculating it may have to do with why Rey had possible memories of this island when having her memories force searched by Ren. Some think she was with Luke when he initially found the Jedi temple. Luke then drops her off and gives the map piece to Lor or someone who Lor acquired the piece from.) Next comes as to why R2D2 was in low power mode...well apparently it wasn't Luke's doing and it was a case of being a heartbroken little droid. BB8 actually is the one who brings him out of his self induced coma.
I haven't seen anything yet. Speculation Spoiler Snoke said his training wasn't complete yet. Which was quite apparent in the movie. He was powerful but was quite lacking in many other areas. Maybe that has something to do with why he hasn't achieved the title of Darth. It maybe just as simple as Ben trying to completely destroy what was left of his old personality and life. It also might be that Snoke isn't Sith. There were many other bad guys from the old EU that were just as powerful as the Jedi maybe he is some take on one of them. That said my best guess is that Snoke is Darth Plagueis or maybe someone much older in Vitiate/Valkorion.
Where were George Lucas' writing credits? They ripped off Episodes IV and VI left and right with the plot so bad, so he should have gotten some. To me, this was like hiring James Patterson to write the sequel to Shakespeare's MacBeth. Good director/writer. But on par with the originals??? Nope. And why is everybody spoilering everything? You would have to be a complete dumbass to open this thread and not expect anything spoiled. Haha
My post is mostly speculation. I won't spoiler it, as most people seeing this thread now would probably have watched the movie by now. The wisdom of the older characters in the movies usually tends to be right. Leia said she still saw the light in Kylo Ren. So I'm thinking arc-wise, this story will be another one of redemption. Especially considering how Han told his son that Snoke would only use him until he gets what he wants, and then destroy him. So what Snoke really wants, I believe, is Rey, just like Palpatine wanted Luke. After all, Snoke did say, "Bring her to me." The following is probably stupid, but this is where I'd like the story to go: I'd like to see Rey being trained by Luke, and then afterward, somehow becoming disillusioned by the light side of the force and seduced by the dark side (she does have a lot of raw power and rage). With Snoke having Rey - the most powerful person - on his side, he will attempt to dispose of Ren. Surviving the attack, Ren would see the error of his ways and leave the dark side. He'd get together with Luke to fight Rey/Snoke, with Luke dying at the hands of Rey. Realizing that she killed her father (or uncle), Rey would, together with her cousin/brother Ren, destroy Snoke. The whole story would end with the two realizing that there is no dark side or light side, but rather, only balance. Thus, they'd become gray jedis... But hey, it's just speculating and wishing
That might make sense if George Lucas was a good writer. Episodes 1-3 proved that he's tapped out when it comes to creativity along with proving that he's not a very good director. This movie wouldn't have been anywhere near as good as it was if Lucas had a bigger part, keeping him as far removed from the film as possible was a brilliant idea and was the best part of him selling to Disney.
That isn't Max von Sydow. That is an actor by the name of Garrick Hagon. The character he played was Biggs Darklighter. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PwyjSD3195o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1Kgl9gmtvZo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The prequels are overly hated on. Their big failure was the over use of CGI, making the movies cartoonish at times. I didn't care for the story in Phantom menace, but otherwise they weren't bad.
The prequels don't exist to me. That is why people are probably as high on this new one as they are - they are using the prequels to set the bar. I'm talking about the magic of the original trilogy. This movie was probably good enough when compared to Ant Man vs. Fart Man or whatever else ppl gobble up these days. This movie didn't need to be made. Like I said, in my original post, the original trilogy felt like plots that were discovered not conjured up. This movie is much more a bunch of ppl getting together saying "we need to make a ton of money on this Star Wars franchise. Somebody throw a plot together - just throw in a battle station to be destroyed, a villain with a mask, an altered voice, and a family relationship with a hero, a plan in a droid,..." God - it goes on and on. Nothing clever in it at all.
I believe George Lucas made them agree to never touch the prequel movies or the clone wars cartoon so they are forever a part of canon.
I'm not sure they could be hated on enough honestly. From a film making standpoint alone they were awful and they were poorly written on top of that. Basically they all but destroy episodes 4-6 if you watch the films in numerical order because you see Anakin turn into Vader, you see the kids born, you see them named....I mean all of the impact moments of "I am your father" and "there is another Skywalker" are just totally ruined. Not to mention the awful acting and the Jar Jar, and the midichlorians..... There's little to nothing good about the prequels, but they could have been done well...if only Lucas sold everything to Disney earlier. I have no doubt that they'd have done a better job.
canon is 2008 3d clone wars cartoon (not the 2003 cartoon), 2014 Rebels, and all 7 movies. HOWEVER, like I said before. They will make no references to the prequels because everyone hates them. They symbolically and laughably did this in VII twice.
So Lucasfilm and Disney can never attempt to tell a "better" back-story? I doubt Lucas could stop them now if they decided a remake of the prequels would not only make more $$$, but it would be welcome by nearly every star wars fan out there. They don't have to "touch" the prequels... just continue to not acknowledge it and come out with a new backstory.
They were prequels. By the time they came out, we already knew what the outcome would be. It didn't ruin 4-6, because they weren't meant to be watched in order. What a ridiculous complaint. Like I said, the story was bad in Phantom Menace, which is Jar Jar & the midichlorians. The others had better stories that explained how Anakin went from Jedi to Sith, and how the empire came to be. They weren't great movies in the way the original trilogy was, but that is an unfair bar. It could never have been what the original was or is (BTW, I knew who Vader was before I ever watched it, and it did not take away from how special it was).
