Phrase it how you will, he had a chance to make some big free throws and he missed them. It's not the first time he's blown a chance to win or tie the game, and it won't be the last. He's not a clutch player. Every player you just mentioned is better than Lin. If they had an off night, so be it, they are the reason that Charlotte has a winning record.

Every player has blown a chance to win or tie a game down the stretch. And Lin has made his share of those shots, too. Do you watch the Hornets much? Clearly it's Walker and Batum's team, but the team is winning because of TEAM effort and execution. Lin/Lamb have been huge off the bench (they have been the best guard-duo off the bench in the Eastern Conference all season), Zeller has really stepped up in Jefferson's absence, Marvin Williams has been solid and Hairston has done his part. This is how a team works, and this is "the reason Charlotte has a winning record".

I've watched them 2 or 3 times and I keep tabs on them because I own Kemba Walker in fantasy sports. I take back my comments about Hairston as he's been pretty awful, and I didn't realize you included him in your list of "other people to blame." Lin is a minor cog in that Charlotte Hornets machine and he's been decent as a backup. But he's probably the 6th best player on that team. And he choked big time down the stretch against Houston last night.
I won't deny that he choked on those FTs (tho I still find it odd that Rockets fans think the Rockets would have lost had he made those FTs even tho they would have still been up by 2 with 17 seconds left). But I've been watching the Hornets all season and will say that the roster is pretty even...the difference between "the best player" and "the 6th best player" (and "the 8th best player") is not all that much. Yes, there is a drop-off at the end of the bench (eg. Roberts, Daniels), but the players who are regular in the rotation can all contribute...Coach Clifford has gone with whoever is playing well for "down the stretch"...every player (including Kemba and Batum) has spent time on the bench to finish games when other players were playing well and were kept on the court.
The point as I mentioned in another posting is that Lin like any other NBA player will have highs and lows, but for lin his lows are only what you Tinsane inmates enjoy putting out. I have seen enough games to seen the greats like Bird, Isiah, Magic make key errors in the playoffs...and I'm not comparing Lin to these great players...but I have seen role players like...Starks, Mo Cheeks, and many others...bad TOs, shooting and missing shots..etc. It happens.
All that may be true but there is a big drop off from Walker, Batum and Williams to "everybody else." Lin sits firmly in the everybody else category. From time to time he's good, from time to time he's awful, most of the time he's just another guy with really annoying hair.

Lin had a lot more lows than highs in that series, his last as a Rocket. Starks basically shot the Knicks out of a chance to win in game 7, so if you want to pin that loss on him, you'd probably have a good case. Lin should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Isiah, Bird, and Magic ever again. He barely belongs in the same conversation as John Starks, who was a rugged perimeter defender in the early 90's and a key playoff cog for the Riley era Knicks. Lin is struggling to be relevant as a backup. That's OK - there's far worse fates, but that is who he is these days (and probably always, except for the flukish Linsanity run).
