It was a stupid, short-sighted decision given how bad the OL has been and how Hoyer/Mallet are relative unknowns (if not known for being below average). Putting Savage on IR meant he couldn't practice with the team either. It was basically a move that put some Hardknocks flier on the squad. Now he's missing out on tons of PT as well. Just dumb all around.
No one knows, people just complaining to complain. We had Mallet and Hoyer at the time, most team only keep 2 QBs on the roster.
He had a sprained shoulder. A severe sprain, but still just a sprain. Initial reports were he'd be out 4-6 weeks, and that was 15 weeks ago. Just going by that, I'm assuming he'd be healthy and playing by now if he weren't IR'd. If he's still injured then something is seriously wrong.
List of teams who started the year with 2 QBs on active roster: Patriots Dolphins Ravens Bengals Texans Colts Jaguars Titans Raiders Chargers Cowboys Giants Bears Lions Falcons 49ers Seahawks So yeah, 17 out of 31. About half. You know what these teams also mostly have in common? A definitive starting and/or franchise QB. There's no way to polish this turd. BOB/Smith dun goofed by IRing Savage.
I'd rather an argument about keeping Keenum than Savage. We don't know much about this guy outside of a coming off the bench on a couple pre-season games. He could be Ryan Mallet for all we know.
I don't necessarily agree with that. I think they firmly believed that the roster spot was going to be more valuable than Savage at 3rd string because they thought Hoyer or Mallett would entrench themselves as the starter, with the other being the back-up.
This thread should be renamed to : "Yeah I know Rick Smith sucks donkey ass, but lets find some more ridiculous excuses for his horrible draft pick choices so that we can keep him for another year."
mccheap move..cmon guys. its funny seeing that dumb 'aww shucks'look around here when folks finally realize mccheap has chumped you again! yee haw!! save some money money monaay... cheap cheap !! noted - " smith/mcnair has pulled this "IR stash" move every single year with young players who they think are either a year away from contributing or who doesn't want to have to pay as much down the road, which in turn has hurt their earning potentials later on when their resumes are not as good as they should be. "
You only get one of those slots and they gave it to Ryan Griffin who, one could argue, has been an important addition since he came back. Not saying you aren't correct but I am glad that Griffin was able to make it back since he's the only remotely capable TE this team has. I'm not sure why he couldn't have been assigned to the practice squad. I'd certainly feel more comfortable with him than Weeden or the wide receiver they just signed to be a backup qb.
I thought it at the time and I still think it was a very stupid decision given that we had no sure fire starter...and we were one year removed from going through 4 QBs, so you'd think you'd be a little more cautious. Also, I do not think, at all, that Savage was IR'd because the team was giving up on him. If anything, he had flashes of showing that he was the best QB on the roster during the preseason. He played very well and showed a lot of improvement from his rookie season. OB has mishandled many things ever since taking over in regards to depth charts, talent evaluation, roster management...QB carousel, Charles James, D. Manning getting cut, only to be signed a little while later when we realized our safeties suck, Rahim Moore continually getting first team reps and praise...only to show that for the first 2 months of the season, he was the worst player on the defense. OB has ZERO talent evaluation ability. He doesnt play guys like Jaelen Strong, even though he brings it every single time he steps on the field. He really needs to just stick to coaching and let others deal with the talent and roster makeup.
Granted, it wasnt against starters, but he played very well in practice and in the preseason games. His arm strength is also top notch, as he can make any throw on the field. His numbers in 4 preseason games this year: 46/74, 458 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT = 92.1 QB Rating Mostly, however, he showed a lot of improvement from last season, which is something that is always welcome with project QBs.
FWIW a sprain is a tear. The initial reports don't really make a ton of sense. If it was a severe sprain then it should keep him out longer than 4 to 6 weeks. I've had an AC joint sprain that was between a grade 2 to 3 from getting thrown on my shoulder. It took me about 4-5 weeks to get back to jiujitsu and another month to feel comfortable with it. I was lucky that I didn't have a complete tear which is a grade 3 or higher for an AC separation. Those are termed severe sprains and have a recovery time of 6 to 12 weeks. For my injury, if I had to throw a football I would have been out at least a couple months I think. Does anyone even know the exact injury Savage had? Was it a shoulder separation or was it a dislocation?
he will be drawing a paycheck for the third year in a row and we don't know what we have in the kid If nothing. . . drop him move on If competent . . .no more wasting time on other backups . . we have our backup If something special . . . .. . then let him be special But constantly having in him hidden and speculated on is annoying Do a diddle or get off the pot with this guy Rocket River
