To me Rey did the impossible. She captured the spirit of Mark Hamill (Luke's) innocence. If you think about it, her carrying the film for a large part was nothing short of amazing.

I also liked BB-8's Bic lighter joke. hahahahaha

I meant the specific thing RR talked about. Obviously there was very little dialogue walking down hallways or Camera A Camera B shots. Or complete CG sets. No brilliant lines like "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere"

    I agree with you.
IMO Guardians is the better movie

This movie is 100% nostalgia driven and Hype
    but
    IT IS A DECENT MOVIE

I think this movie is all setup . . . it is just a setup up
So it is not a real complete story

They really should have given her (Captain Phasma) the fighting scene against Finn. The one Storm Trooper with the baton like thing

George Lucas doesn't have the talent to make this movie though. From a film making standpoint alone Episode 7 was miles ahead of 1-3 not to mention that it was superior in just about every way.

Getting George Lucas as removed as possible from the making of Star Wars was a win in and of itself. JJ Abrams made a hell of a movie and it lived up to and exceeded pretty much everyone's expectations which is a huge win. If Episode 7 was anywhere near as awful as 1-3, people would be destroying it right now.

Helllllllllllll no. If Lucas made this movie, I'd give him props for sure, but the prequels make half of Star Wars laughable. Unforgivable stuff. Thank goodness he sold the rights.

I can understand this, for sure. After a second viewing, I found Finn's character to be less interesting and effective than after my initial viewing. And adding to that, I agree that I'm hoping Rey is not Luke's daughter or something like that. They flirted with the originals way too much in this and need to branch out into new territory or else this will all just come off as fan service. Really hoping they don't throw out something like Rey and Kylo Ren are brother and sister. That'd be so bad.

It was my understanding that Anakin fulfilled the prophecy by defeating the Emperor and previously restoring "balance" to the force by eliminating the Jedi, except for 2 (Yoda & Obi Wan), leaving 2 on the side of light and 2 on the darkside (Vader & Palpatine). I think the prophecy stuff is behind us.

Anakin saw the future in his dreams, which Palpatine used to twist his mind to the dark side. Luke knew that his friends were in trouble and said they would die if he didn't leave Dagobah, though I don't recall whether that was future or present he saw.

Anakin brought balance to the force. That was always silly in Episode 1 though because the Force had been strongly favoring the Jedi as the Sith had been in hiding, and there were many Jedi at the time. By turning to the darkside, he actually brought balance to the force.

Rey and Snoke aren't technically Sith.

If Rey is someone completely new, no relation at all, I don't think her character would have the same impact, and likewise her brewing conflict with Kylo Ren wouldn't have same emotional punch. I agree it might be too obvious and it might be too difficult to fit into the existing narrative. But there has to be some connection, maybe not along blood lines, but something.

Either way I like the contrast of Han and Ben with that of Luke and Annakin. Luke saved Annakin; he knew there was good left in him and believed he could turn him back, and he succeeded. But Ren's dilemna is not that he was struggling to escape the dark side, but that he was trying to shed the call to the light. He is an evil character, but complex. And he is exactly the villain this franchise needs. It's going to be interesting to see his journey, and I wonder if they will ever put him and Leia together.

Saw it at Bob Bullock last night.

    Regarding Rey...

Could see Han having a one night stand after breaking away from Leia and fathering a kid he didn't even know about. Would explain why he didn't recognize her face but also why he has a fond attachment to her. In that sense Rylo and her would be step siblings. Perhaps Luke caught on it was Han's kid and did some mentoring for the first four or five years of her life with the force and then separated after Rylo failed as his apprentice. Perhaps fearing he'd turn Rey to the dark side despite his best efforts, he thought it best to abandon her and save her from a fugitive life. Not that he left her with much out in a desert but still...

Enjoyed the movie. Felt like I knew what was going to happen with much of the story but it was done so well it met my expectations.

If I had a gripe, it would be with the preview for the new Star Trek. Sabotage by Beastie Boys seemed really out of place for that trailer. I mean if you have to pick a Beastie Boys song for Star Trek, better to pick Intergalactic IMO.

Saw it, thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely the best since the original series. I'll leave my overall evaluation compared to those three until after I see it again without the hype and expectations.

    However, had some takeaways:

    1) I thought the initial setup was kind of weak. The Empire was defeated and it's been decades since that happened. In the meantime a "Republic" has been formed but Leia is not part of the Republic, instead she leads an army that is totally separate known as The Resistance. The Resistance fights against a remnant army of the Empire that wants to retake control of the galaxy. Why is this logical? Wouldn't she be a general of the Republic army? Or, more appropriately as in her EU version, a diplomatic leader of the Republic? The whole Republic/Resistance think didn't make a lot of sense and was clearly just contrived as way to turn this back into a small band of heroes against the big bad guy. I don't think that was necessary at all and it didn't make sense.

    2) The Super Weapon was stupid, sorry. I mean I'm just sorry but it was dumb. A planet that fires off the energy of the sun in a directed blast across the galaxy at a specific planet? Or that they can somehow break into multiple blasts at the last second to destroy the aforementioned dumb "Republic."

    3) Not sure I buy into the Supreme Leader. The Empire was supposedly EXTREMELY Xenophobic and the Supreme Leader looks kind of dumb to me and I hate the name. But we'll see how that grows over the next few movies.

Other than those three gripes I loved the movie. Thought Rey was outstanding, Fin was ok, Solo and Chewie were good (although it was weird how quickly Chewie got over Han.)

    On Max van Sydow

By the way, did anyone who watched the movie figure out who Max Von Sydow is playing? They referred to him as an old friend but nothing really beyond that. Is he a character in the EU or the cartoons or something?

Who thinks Finn and Rey should smash? He was a massive white knight, but hey he contributed a lot!
Also I don't buy that he got friendzoned with the end scene, they clearly have feelings for each other from the earlier scenes.
Especially the scene where Chewie mentions he saves Rey.

Once Rey goes "dark", she'll never go back. If you catch my drift.

Agreed. Relied to much on the previous movies on the world building aspect

    in this movie
    You have three factions
and you only see two of them

Just finished watching for the first time.

I was worried about how I would feel about the introduction of the new characters. I enjoyed them all, thought the acting was good and their timing was spot on. They were much more believable than what I saw in the three previous films.

Won't talk specifics, but this film felt much more organic to me which I appreciate. Can't wait for the next one.

What is the difference between a Sith and a guy w/ dark side force powers + red saber?
