There isn't any other than people insisting that their broken eye tests are correct. I think he makes smart rotations and has size, but he's too slow and unathletic to be a great defender By drtg, dbpm, and rim protection, he's nothing special. here are the rim protection numbers. Go down to last year and keep scrolling down to see DMo. http://nyloncalculus.com/stats/rim-protection/
How many power forwards would have good numbers if they played the vast majority of the season out of position at center? Being able to read stats is great, but without context you can easily come up with the wrong conclusions.
I know dear. Nyloncalculus is my favourite stat forum. But I was hoping at least someone would have saved last years nba.stats.com about DMO's post up defence to present as some kind of argument (this year are not pretty, but I won't judge by that). Actually too bad because Seth Partnow has made an analysis on that. Here read : http://nyloncalculus.com/2015/09/16/deep-dives-rim-protection-metrics-revisited/ For a combo big these are extremely important.
This is a weak excuse. He didn't play the vast majority at center. You just made that up without checking the stats. And lots of teams go small and play their PF at center. Obviously, DMo struggled way more than a pf like Draymond because he's slow and unathletic. In other words, his immense struggles at c prove exactly that he isn't a rim projector, it doesn't excuse him
I don't get the comments about his lateral quickness. One of his ELITE skills is his ability to hedge, extend, double or reposition on pick and roll defense. It is so good that people quit trying to PNR with his man because most of the time, he extends his hedge on the top side of the PNR so far that the guard with the ball is in retreat and has only burned shot clock with no opening available. His ability to time and execute a retreat after extending such a hedge is battier like. In fact, I would say that his defense is very similar to battier -- fundamentally sound, positional based, effort based, high IQ, and gravity bound. He isn't trying to block or steal, he wants you to take the shot our defense wants you to take, not yours. There are zero sports center highlights. Now, this style of defense works better on the perimeter because bigs ideally can provide weak side help. But Dmos contribution to team defense is glue like, aka battier. And yes, someone will sign him to. Max or near max deal. And the rockets should match. DMo as a great team defender and skilled offensive PF is the perfect compliment to Howard. He is the key to us turning around the season because he greases the offense for both H and H, and helps funnel attackers to Dwight.
Donatas Motiejunas is NOT a great defender. He has improved greatly since he was drafted and he has become an above average positional defender, but overall he is not anything close to great. He has made himself, overall, not a liability and on team with other good defenders would do well. Also, as far as him stepping in for Howard, teams drove the lane with no fear when he was in the game, he did not contest shots or prevent teams from scoring inside as a 5.
Our defensive sheme isn't aggresive enough to have the pfs hedge very high often. If it was a sheme that had the bigs all the time hedging high he wouldnt' be able to do it with his foot speed. And who cares about the highlights? I have seen him miss rotations and misscomunicating, and I have seen him get back cuts. Any proof of his elite pnr defence except your eye?
THIS. Agreed with everything. I don't think for a second or claimed that he is a liability. But to say he is really good, or great or elite is an hyperbole. Aha..I mentioned it in previous threads but please pay attention to the very important stat that is called Deterrence.
Anyone that uses the word Elite with DMO outside of his post game you gotta roll your eyes. Anything this guy does halfway well is completely overblown by some of the Minion posters in here. Love his game but he needs to get better at rebounding cuz when the playoffs roll around and the physicality ramps up every possession counts.
In a perfect world Montrez becomes an elite defender so we can counter Draymond Green and we can put DMo against HB (if he's still on the team in a couple of years)
Couldn't you argue that the 16 point differential in "points saved" between Capela and Dwight should be the most important stat out of that bunch aside from FG%? Capela looks better on most of the rim protection indices.
No because Capella doens't play as many minutes (nor is he capable of with his fouling issues) and because a LOT of those minutes are against bench players. There are stats that show how a player does vs starters compared to vs bench and I have seen them posted time to time but I dont' know where to find it. But long story short the VAST majority of nba players perform (as expected) worse vs starters. And as for the minutes, a players perfomance goes down with the minutes he logs in. Also to explain things : deterrence is the ONE stat that shows positional defence when defending the rim. That the center/big is at the right place at the right time. That he has the right position to stop the attacker from even attacking the rim. And thus it is the best way to defend the rim, when the player doesn't attack and dribble OR takes a bad percentage out of ballance floater. [ exactly the same works with 3point shots. The best defece is the attacker not to take the shot. ] That's why players as Duncan who are dinosaurs have so good rim protection because they know where they should be and when. Be PATIENT with Capella. He isn't even in the same convo with Dwight right now but he's young and green. People reasoning their expectations and give the player patience to develop is the best way to be a fan who escapes bipolar disorder.
Also a lot of times a very high contest % is bad sign. It shows that the player is always going for the blocks and doesn't have experience/instict/bball iq esp when accompanied by a low DI.
Yeah, Malakas has been very critical of DMo for quite some time now. I have him ignored since summer.
Very good arguments. Answered all the questions and provided a comprehensive analysis on how good DMO's analysis is without resorting to personal attacks and trolling. DMO only fans same as Lin only fans.
Nice troll I am. Instead of personal attacking others I make conversations with arguments and provide stats. I must raise my game and learn from DudeWah, OpenLayup and you. Still silence of an argument about why DMO is a great defender. Silence Silence Silenceeeee.
MOREY said it last year, you don't like the guy, we get it.....if you can't see it by watching the game then you need to learn the game of basektball DD
