What are you talking about? I never said I had any idea of whether the coaches were going to go after another QB or not. I'm just arguing against the thought that got us in trouble sigh Baker Mayfield and countless other quality QB's. We may have several QB's on the roster - that doesn't mean the QB position is taken care of. I think you're being a little sensitive, because I wasn't even thinking of you when making those comments.

Yes the QB situation sucked this year, but next year I'm sure it will be better.

You knocked on Kai Locksley when I mentioned him, that's not coincidence.

Baker Mayfield was Mack Brown's fault not Charlie Strong's.

Let me say my only knock on Locksley - he's unproven. Story: when Swoopes initially committed to UT, he was five stars and committed to UT, our QB situation was less than perfect. So, I was excited and emailed a few friends. Lesson learned.

I thought he was 4 stars and the last 5 star was Gilbert

They were both 4 star rated Athletes. I think Shane Buechele will be our starting QB next year. He'll be a true freshman but he's enrolling in January. He has mobility and can throw.

He initially was 5 stars by Rivals, and then he kept sinking his senior year in high school down to a 4 star athlete.

Lol, I saw them kick the hell out of Marble Falls twice back when they were in the same district. Lake Travis has a, uh, talented fan base.

When I saw Baker Mayfield in his freshman season at Tech, it appeared the college football universe didn't miss anything. It's amazing how much better he's gotten.

That's fair. But that means you need to knock every true freshman, RS freshman, and really any other first year starter. I don't recall Swoopes being a 5 star but even if was, that means our last two 5 star QB recruits were Garrett Gilbert and Tyrone Swoopes. In other words, stars don't mean a damn thing. And if they did, Murray would have taken full reigns as the starter and we wouldn't even be discussing his name right now. Instead, he actually had a worse QB ranking than both Swoopes and Heard last season which is kinda mind boggling if you think about it.

You're right in that we are going into next season with an unknown QB situation, but Murray is not going to fix that if that is what you are really worried about.

There's other positions we need depth in.
I think we'll be fine for qb.

You pretty much made my case in your first paragraph. Everybody is unproven, so keep looking. Competition is good. The losers might transfer, but that doesn't mean competition isn't good.

Yeah, Rivals at least had Swoopes as 5 stars before his senior season. Got me super excited that better days were coming. I didn't really follow recruiting much when we were winning under Mack, so I didn't realize I should be skeptical of those ratings. Same disappointments occurred when I first started looking at the NBA Draft (Stromile Swift hehe).

I still feel bummed about Swoopes. He's got the physical gifts. How many QB's can throw it farther? How many are harder to bring down? People always rightfully dog him for accuracy, but it wasn't always that way. Remember the UCLA game his first season as starter? I remember he completed 10+ passes in a row, and I thought we had something to build on. Seems like his composure has some weaknesses and maybe didn't benefit from great coaching. I feel bad when players pick Texas, seem to put in the work, and things don't work out.

You can blame Watson for that. Watson owes Bridgewater some money because he is the only reason Watson had a job the last few years.

Why wouldn't you blame Swoopes (to the extent anybody is blameworthy at all)?

He's not a very accurate passer, never has been. His 2A high school team was 1-9 his senior season and he completed 42% of his passes for a 67.1 QB rating. (apparently they had a horrid OL - sound familiar?)

Not exactly what you'd expect for somebody who would be an out-of-the-box dominator at QB.

He is right now exactly what he probably should be, a power-running change o pace QB who occassionally throws to keep the defense honest. JT Barrett obviously would have been the wiser choice that year.

I'm not arguing Swoopes is going to turn out, but he wasn't that inaccurate at the start of his only year starting, passed for better than 60% in five games. 24-36 at UCLA, I believe he set the record for passing yards in the OU game. What makes you think Watson was getting it done?

I don't give a crap about Watson, but it is funny that you cite Swoopes success (which was very limited and increasingly easy for teams with competent defenses to take away, culminating in a disaster vs Arkansas) and alternatively ascribe 100%of his failure to his position coach. Doesn't it work both ways?

Swoopes had a few set plays that he could run initially, competent DCs took those away and made him read a defense and complete difficult throws. And for a guy who has bad accuracy, that was enough to make him lose his job, which he did.
