Losing Murray sucks only because it shows a real problem in the way Sumlin is running things. However, Murray as a player was a total disaster on the field and in the locker room. A damn shame that he took the spot Stidham would have had. Losing Kyle Allen was the biggest blow, and Sumlin blew it this year with his management of him as a QB. Supposedly Sumlin already had an in-house with the 4* dual-threat QB from Channelview already committed to Bama so we'll see if that turns up anything, but yeah it's gonna be tough with 1 scholly qb on the roster.
That seems plausible. Sumlin really screwed up. Five star QB's don't expect to have to compete for a job. It's really hard to recruit that type of player at that position in back to back years, and have both guys be happy. Sumlin definitely shouldn't have promised Murray anything other than an opportunity to compete for the job. To lose both of these guys really makes Sumlin look incompetent. I will say that I was somewhat disappointed in both Allen and Murray. They both have talent, you can see that. But, Allen was inconsistent, and Murray looked very small out there. Both guys threw some bad interceptions. However, they are both young and could go on to have great college careers. It will be interesting to see where they end up.
Sherman's achievements are so underrated. He took over a complete DISASTER from that Francione CLOWN, and HE was the bridge for A&M to where they've been on this stretch. Sumlin doesn't build jack. He owes 80% of his limited success to Briles and Sherman, and I've said that from the get go. I see posts here talking about other QB's available to take the place of Munchkin Murray and the other transfer. I can't fathom a reason why a good QB would want to play for Sumlin now. Transferring as a college player is a HUGE setback for the player - it has to be like an absolute last resort. Why would another good QB choose to go somewhere where TWO 5 star QB's chose the nuclear option? Sumlin should be gone NOW IMO.
Not an Aggie but I think this is where the bigger problem lies. Sumlin is too hellbent on trying to find the next Manziel. Hill and Allen were young and inexperienced QBs that were pretty much yanked at the first sign of trouble. Yeah both played poorly and inconsistent at times but that's what is to be expected from young players. Both guys also played really well at times so you let them play through it and develop them along the way. This isn't much different from a lot of universities trying to replace a star player but the expectations from Sumlin (and the fans for the most part) might be unrealistic for any player, let alone young and experienced ones. As far as Murray, he should have redshirted. Sumlin promising snaps was a mistake from the start, but Murrays weren't much smarter falling for it.
Kyler was entitled to whatever he was promised. I don't know what Sumlin told him during the last recruiting season but I do know Murray was ready to switch his commitment to UT and then Sumlin went to his house and everything changed in a night.
I agree that this a a disaster with these two guys. But, Sumlin has had success with other QB's. A&M still has great facilities. A&M is still the only Texas school in the SEC. There are reasons why players would want to go to A&M. I agree that Sumlin maybe should be fired. This whole thing is a mess.
Apparently Hurts is still Bama bound where he'll get to be 4th or 5th string QB before converting to WR as a junior. I like how Kyler pulls this crap right before JUCO signing day, giving the coaches hardly any time to approach anyone worth a schollie that hasn't already committed. At least Martell still seems fully on board, although he's a long way away. I hope Hubenak has a healthy year and surprises people, although his stats at Blinn indicate that he can certainly throw the ball, albeit at a lower level of competition. Did Sumlin screw this up? Yeah, he never should have promised Murray PT as a true freshman when it was obvious that he was not ready for major D1 football. As for Kyle, sorry man, Spavital may be a great guy but he currently sucks as an OC. You can't let a player hold you hostage to the detriment of the team. You didn't do it for Jefferson during the lead up to Chavis, you shouldn't do it now. Sorry this is kind of stream of conscious, I just got done with a 15 hour work day.
Remember UT-Austin's football downfall happened when their 5 star QB (Garrett Gilbert) flamed out and then transferred. They were then forced to go with lesser prospects (ie mouth-agape McCoy and concussed Ash) and then to freshmen like Swoopes and later Heard. Could A&M be on that same path? Likely. At least UT-Austin actually has some success, including a natty. A&M has been a middle of the pack performer in their own division of the conference.
#1 QB Tate Martell (rivals.com). Aggies. Hope we find out what's going on behind the scenes at some point.
So he's a high school student again next year, and then probably red-shirts his first year at A&M, so basically you're looking at Hubenak and Connor McQueen the next two seasons. Great plan.
Where is this assumption coming that Stidham would have committed to A&M? He commited to Tech even before Murray committed. And even if he did commit to A&M, no saying whether he would have flipped on A&M for Baylor as he did to Tech.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Brown: There’s a $20M buyout for Sumlin, and I’m told Sharp is going to try and cut that in half or fire Sumlin for cause.</p>— Bo Mattingly (@SportsTalkwBo) <a href="https://twitter.com/SportsTalkwBo/status/677969926410342400">December 18, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Any truth to this? Doesn't make sense to me.
Seems stupid to me A&M has been more relevant during Sumlin's tenure than at any point in my lifetime Imo, if they make this move, they will fall off the map again
