At *UT* there are very specific rules for how to deal with confidential information for employees that deal with it. I'd have a hard time believing the State Dept doesn't have stricter ones. People get paid a lot of money to keep this sort of thing from happening, and it happened because she chose to ignore the rules.

Keeping official cabinet-level correspondence from a private email server, even if that doesn't include forwarding classified documents (and probably does), would get most people fired, or at the very least severely reprimanded.

All she'd have to do is admit she didn't follow best practices, IT policy, and all that jazz, and explain why she chose to use her own server, but...she didn't do that.

And you know what? As a public employee, we deserve an answer.

She's a lawyer dealing with secret and private information. There is no excuse for her not knowing or understanding privacy laws. It's part of her job.

I assume she had the highest (or close to) the highest security clearance level. When holding a security clearance it is mandatory to complete regular reviews of the rules and expectations.

Anyone who has taken even the basic infosec course knows not to put classified information on a private unsecured server. Hell, they'd know you couldn't even send it through a government unsecured server.

This was gross incompetence that could have legitimately cost people their lives. She knew what she was doing was wrong, but she did it anyway so she could ensure that her tracks would be erased after she was gone. If the information went through government servers she couldn't have all incriminating evidence wiped.

That's kind of a big deal.

I'd summarize my take on it as: Yes, I'm sure the wingnuts are out to hang you with anything they can get on you, but, A. You are in good company and B. That doesn't give you a free pass.

Other Secretary States before her used private email accounts to conduct official business. Clinton was the first to do it exclusively. She didn't break any laws in doing what she did. I think there should be laws against doing what she did, but there were not.

I think what happened is that Clinton is just really arrogant and thinks she is a big shot. So having her own email was all about her building her personal brand and yes, making things less of a pain. Was there some part of her that realized that doing this would also provide some benefit in case of a scandal and her emails were needed?

I don't think so. She doesn't have the tech knowledge or know-how to realize how to take advantage of something like that.

I really thing she is just arrogant and sloppy more than anything else. And that leads to ignorance/mistakes which leads to these kinds of scandals.

I won't be voting for those other former Secretaries of States either. Anyway, whether Clinton's motivations were more like you imagine or more like I imagine, it's not a good look.

That's fine but I'll say one thing. The Bush administration got in trouble for the same thing in 2007. If you remember, when the Democrats took the House in 2006 they started an investigation into the firing of US attorneys based on their partisanship.

Anyway, after requesting emails from the Bush administration, the House Committee found out that emails had been deleted because they had been sent from non-governmental emails on separate servers.

And at the time, Republicans made all kinds of apologist arguments about that incident so it is a little annoying that this has somehow turned into a "scandal."

I will say, the Republicans are so much better at messaging and creating controversy around nearly identical issues.

House Majority Leader (and likely replacement to John Boehner as Speaker) Kevin McCarthy told Fox News‘ Sean Hannity on Tuesday:

“Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee. A select committee. What are her numbers today?…Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because she is untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened had we not fought and made that happen.”

Democrats Call For Immediate End To Benghazi Investigation After McCarthy Admits Fraud

After Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) admitted that Republicans lied about the purpose of the Benghazi investigation, several top Democrats are calling out the House Republicans’ abuse of power and calling for an immediate end to the investigation.

Rep. McCarthy got flustered during an interview with Sean Hannity and blew the worst kept political secret in Washington. He admitted that the Benghazi investigation is all about digging up mud on Hillary Clinton.

I'm just curious, Commodore: if you keep repeating things to yourself, does anyone else eventually believe it?

Whats more concerning is that he just embeds little tweets in every post.

Times like these I wish I had my favorite Buck quote that used to be in my sig, "the only thing worse than than the twits that use twitter are the twats too stupid to stupid to come up with their own tweets." (roughly)

Wish I could find it again.
