Yates got the Texans in the playoffs before as well as won a playoff game. I'd rather roll with Yates. I'd take Yates "Max" over Hoyer's "Max" potential as we've seen both but again, just my opinion. Would love to see Drew Brees in a Texans uniform next season
News flash: the Patriots are better than the Texans. Yates or Hoyer, doesn't matter. This team is built defense-first, the defense played well but the offense needed to do better against this Patriots team. Team will be fine. I'm sure Luck was freaking out seeing Clowney all up in the backfield.
The big difference between them is that Yates is better at throwing the deep ball. Guys have to stop and wait for the ball a lot less when Yates throws it than they do when Hoyer throws it, although Yates still struggles with accuracy problems overall.
Yates gives Hopkins a way better chance to expose defenses... Hoyer doesn't. Hoyer plays too careful causing him to suck and his fear will eventually get him hurt too.
Not even just Hopkins, if Hoyer hits Washington in stride, he's got a walk in TD....instead Washington had to stop for a cup of tea while waiting for the damn ball to get to him and the defense was right on him making it a very hard catch. Have Yates throw that one, there's a good chance he hits him in stride and that's a TD.
They were not today The Texans were not OUT TALENTED We were out coached. They scored 27 points. But their offense was not all world Rocket River
I really think part of that was the fact that Belichick knew that Hoyer wasn't capable of taking advantage of the deep ball so they game planned against the short stuff and the trick plays. I think if Yates was going to be the starting QB, they'd have prepared differently and probably wouldn't have been as vulnerable to the long pass....because they'd have more respect for just about any other QB.
Hoyer has played pretty well this season. Tonight wasn't great, but it wasn't awful. He made some great throws, and his receivers dropped a lot of catchable passes, it ultimately came down to too many untimely sacks/fumbles. Texans fans obsession with change is puzzling to me. They always want the alternate, and never consider the possibility that the alternate will be worse. I like Yates, but I think he is a career backup for a reason. Offenses are limited when he is in, he is the definition of a game manager. Bottom line is we should start the best QB, and I believe that to be Hoyer.
No, dumb idea. There's a reason Yates was a free agent. Hoyer is average, Yates is below average. But hey, every time there's a loss someone wants to bring in the back up QB
say hoyer is starting, switch yates as the starter at 11:58 am sunday. following week, say yates is starting switch our 3rd qb into the starter role. =)
Yep. Yates might suck sometimes, but Hoyer is just pathetic. You can see it all over his ****ing face.
We need the following in our next QB: 1) Leadership 2) Heart 3) Clutch 4) Gaminess/ Being a gamer 5) David Ecksteininess
Hoyer is much better, but he's not going to win you games. He's basically a poor-man's prime Schaub for us. He has played like a very good non-franchise QB for us. He has played very well given his own skill level and the fact that our running game is the worst it has been since this team's first couple of years. This may sound stupid, but I have loved the way he's called plays, set protections etc this season. But that only helps you so much if you don't have the passing talent to make the extra winning plays. To beat upper echelon teams consistently, you have to have a quarterback who can make the tough plays rather than making the above average tough plays if you get my meaning. The coaching staff may trust Hoyer as the starting QB given the competition currently on the roster, but they don't trust his overall passing ability. You can tell by the conservative play calling on 3rd and long situations. Lots of fans on this forum complain about us doing draw plays in situations of 3 and like 12+ etc, but remember that our QB is Brian Hoyer not Tom Brady. Rick Smith really really laid an egg putting Tom Savage on IR. Jayson Braddock said that while our main QB target in that 2014 draft was Jimmy G, Savage was the backup option. Savage from what I've seen has phenomenal passing talent, but maybe not the polish/experience you want. If Savage wasn't on IR, those games vs Cincy and NYJ would've been the perfect opportunity to see what we have in him Also on the Fitz vs Hoyer debate, Hoyer has done much better than Fitzpatrick for us. Fitz had the benefit of playing with a healthy Foster the entire season. Having Foster transforms our offense tremendously. He forces DC to bring an extra man to defend against the run instead of being used for pass defense.
Stop wasting your breath (and fingers) on this. We don't have a good to great QB on this roster, so it really doesn't matter who starts. Until we at least take a chance on drafting one, I'm pointing fingers at OB and Rick.
I agree. People that are arguing for Yates aren't saying he's a great QB. But, the Texans do have a better chance of making a big play with Yates at QB. Yates has a stronger arm. Yates can throw the deep ball. Last nights poor offense wasn't all Hoyer's fault. Offensive line was bad. Receivers dropped passes. But, Hoyer was off target on several throws, and he came up short on a couple of deep balls that could have been scores. And yes, the Texans need to bite the bullet and draft a someone that might develop into a starting caliber QB.
