I don't want any part of Gallardo. His FIP is usually up around 4 here recently. He's certainly a solid starter, but not the kind of guy you give huge money to. Over the last 3 years, he's only been slightly better than Scott Feldman. Not that I wouldn't want him, just not at the price tag he will likely come at. His ERA is also comparable to Mike Fiers. IMO adding Gallardo would be spending huge money on what is likely a lateral move. The reason some of us want Kazmir is because he would be a major upgrade in the 20 or so starts he would make, versus Gallardo's 32 starts that would be only slightly better than the guys he would be replacing.
Agreed - Gallardo doesn't strike people out and walks a whole lot of people. He outperforms his peripherals a lot, but there's nothing that screams "outstanding" about him. He would be the #5 starter in the current rotation and doesn't seem to be a guy you spend any real money on. I'd take Feldman over him.
He also doesn't pitch deep into games. In his last 15 games last year, he pitched 6 innings 3 times, and each of those were only 6 innings. Never made it into the 7th, even when pitching shutouts.
Agree 100%. If we're going to lose a first round pick, it better be for someone better than Gallardo. His career has been inconsistent and full of injuries. Good pitcher, sure, but not that big of an upgrade for its cost.
I'd be ok with giving up the pick for Ian Desmond. Seems like a candidate to post a strong bounce back year.
Gallardo's decrease in K rate is a bit alarming, but he has pretty much been the exact opposite of inconsistent and full of injuries. Or are you referring to Kazmir?
Curious if Luhnow looks for a backup catcher via trade or free agency. Our backup catcher (presumably Stassi at this point) will play at least 40 games. Castro been somewhat injury prone, so it wouldn't surprise me if the backup catcher plays 60-80 games. Not sure Stassi is a guy we want playing that many games.
Still hoping for Lucroy. He would do wonders for the Astros offensive attack and is very good defensively as well. I would rather Castro start 40 games and be the backup.
Yup. I like Desmond slotted at 3B. Wonder what his asking price is, and how many years he wants. Good catch, just checked his stats. I thought he was far more injury prone than what his lines show. I'd still rather lose a 1st round pick on a better quality player, whether this year or next.
Not sure if posted yet--but zero picks or losses in the Rule V http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...-bay-rays-tyler-goeddel-top-pick-rule-5-draft other thread, i'm an idiot
Luhnow unsure if the Astros will try to bid for Kenta Maeda.

Jeff Luhnow said he’s unsure on Kenta Maeda: “We have not competed with the exception of Tanaka. … we will again. It hasn't been updated yet since the deals are not official yet: http://m.astros.mlb.com/roster/40-man/
Castro's a wizard behind the plate. Can't overlook the praise Keuchel gives him for his own development. Two years ago Scott Feldman was signed to be the ace and his numbers are about par with his career numbers but still three pitchers have not only leapfrogged him but become some of the best veteran/rookie pitchers in baseball. And they'll either re-sign Kaz or get someone like Fister as the #3 or find one at the deadline. Feldman has tough competition with Fiers/Wojo/Appel, etc just too make the team. I think Max Stassi is the backup. Astros have some holes I think they will try and fill through free agency & internally with AJ Reed/Tyler White, etc Think they should get a #3 starter, 3B and LHRP to add to Sipp before adding a second great catcher.
Castro has been one of the worst hitters in mlb the last 2 years if not the worst. His obp would have been 2nd worst in the league this year if he had enough qualifying AB's. As it was, Gattis had the second worst. Castro had the 3rd lowest obp among qualifiers in 2014 behind Matt Dominguez. He is good defensively, but Lucroy is even better. Lucroy is so much better of a hitter it's like comparing Carlos Correa to Adam Everett.
According to baseball reference's Wins above average player: Carlos Correa = 2.7 Jose Altuve = 2.2 George Springer = 2.2 Colby Rasmus = 0.9 Jake Marisnick = 0.9 Luis Valbuena = 0.4 Jason Castro = -0.1 Evan Gattis = -1.6 Chris Carter = -1.7
