Maybe I haven't followed the offseason closely enough, but has this really even been the case? We were connected to Chapman. Giles a little I guess. Chris Davis by one ESPN personality's prediction... But who else? There were never any real Price or Grienke rumors, outside of those of us clamoring for them on this board. Fernandez seems like the first SP that we have rumored interest in.
You argue just to argue. The Marlins have already met with Boras and his doctor and came up with a plan to limit his innings in 2016... so YES he is on an inning limit. You can say that Boras has no say in it all you want, but the reality is that Boras is an extremely powerful agent that has a great amount of say in how his clients are treated and handled because he had influence over where a number of players end up playing as free agents and whether or not they are traded. The Marlins already sent Michael Hill to make sure that Boras was satisfied with the handling of Fernandez and his anticipated innings in 2016. If you just want to argue, go ahead.
Thus far, only fans are clamoring for Davis and Lind, and too many of them are offseason-only fans, who leave in April and don't come back until July 30.
I've seen media types connect Davis with Astros a few times because Astros don't have an incumbent 1B and media types assume Astros like low contact, high power guys more than most. Astros ended up with a lot of them last year, but I think that was more that they were cheap...which Davis wouldn't be.
Was is written into his contract? If not, then whatever decision the Marlins made will have no bearing on the Astros if they deal for him. Read the article; read any of the articles. He tried to exert his influence and the Mets essentially lobbed a giant FU his way. Now he's trying to characterize it as a misunderstanding to save face. He can make any and every suggestion he wants; he has zero.point.zero influence over what a team decides to do with a team-controlled player. The myth of Scott Boras is vastly overrated. Does Michael Hill work for the Astros?... Whatever one of the most dysfunctional FOs in all of sports planned to do with Fernandez is immediately rendered irrelevant if they trade him.
Was looking more at trades... given the abundance of prospects the Astros have, and their ability to take on payrolls. Also, they seem to often be mentioned on international bids, when they're not sure who's involved, but they can't confirm/deny involvement till the bid is accepted. Again, its probably unlikely that the Astros ever leak anything... every tweet/rumor you hear is a designed leak either by the player or the team that eventually gets them... and a lot of it is mis-information (you can also add they've been mentioned as possible destinations for Andrew Miller, Melancon, Boxberger, Shelby Miller before he was traded, and now Fernandez....)
You are dense....... Sure the Astros can say Boras has zero impact in how they use Fernandez, they can go against the 170-180 inning suggestion by the doctor as well and can even tune out Fernandez' opinion on the issue (who BTW said will include Boras)......... and they end up dumping a huge amount of prospects for a pitcher that will end up demanding a trade, will be a locker room cancer and has zero chance of resigning.
I understand that cases could be made to trade either. We are venturing into a more hypothetical area than I intended to, but if it's between Altuve and Bregman, Bregman being the piece on the move makes more sense for both teams, imo.
I don't expect any team has a complete leak proof. Some rumors are stupid. That said, Luhnow process likely involves kicking a lot of tires so I would expect Astros to be looking at a lot of guys. Astros should have inquired about every free agent or on the block SP and RP not in 150 million dollar+ price range. Even then, it doesn't cost anything to inquire about a free agent so Astros likely at least texted Greinke's agent.
meant to include miller. and melancon (the mention that i saw) just seemed like one speculative tweet by a random. and like i said, i guess i haven't been paying close enough attention and missed us being connected to the others
And why are you guys hyping up Kemp (especially Bregman who's not even Major League ready yet).... If anything... it would be McCullers/Springer/prospects.
Says the guy claiming agents "dictate" baseball operations... And your scenario, btw, is patently absurd. Yeah, athletes love having restrictive limits placed on them and absolutely become cancers when teams remove them...
Even though everything you just said was speculative... Had you tweeted it, and was an accredited member of the press, it would have become a rumor that gets retweeted everywhere and gets posted here by J.R. As much access as there is to information now, there's never been more info that is just flat-out baseless.
Bingo. Basically just happened last night with a Cubs beat writer who is pretty much the equivalent of Texans' pancakes. Too much BS out there already, and it's only day 2 of the winter meetings.
If I'm the Marlins, my starting asking price is Springer/Altuve (take your pick), McCullers, Appel and Singleton. And I'm not sure how far I'd back off of that, frankly.
Everything you just said is as speculative as what I said. Too many people involved to keep something from getting out, but there are also likely so many fabricated events to mask most legit leaks. Can't assume something is legit. Can't assume (though you can place zero value in it) something is not legit as long as it is within reason.
