I completely agree with this assessment. Hinkie's plan takes time and in the end it isn't guaranteed, but it does give you the most likely scenario to acquire a superstar and we all know that superstars is what brings home the turkey bacon. I have no issue with what Hinkie is doing because in the end all I care about is a fan is winning a championship.
To be fair, let's look at Sacramento. Cousins - 5 Gay - 8 Rondo - 21 mclemore- 7 caullie-stein- 6 bellinelli - 18 Collison - 21 koufos - 23 casspi - 23 Butler - 10
Exactly, plenty of teams can screw it up. I think the Sixers are on board with his philosophy, but arent sure if he is that great at player evaluation. At this point at least 1/2 of the process has already taken place and you cant really say Hinkie finds great talent. If you want to be great you need a GM who can hit on the big names and find some lesser talent too. Hinkie has not shown great ability in either area. I think Hinkie's greatest talent has been trading for draft picks, but its time to actually cash in.
Of course, people like you will give him credit for all of the Sixers progress from now on. So predictable. Whatever makes you feel good. Let's see how quickly Hinkie get another GM gig.
Yeah looks like Hinkie won't stay much longer but I don't want him to come back here. If we add someone in our FO I prefer to be someone that will give Morey another perspective than be his own protege who copies moreyball and incredible agressive team building strategies.
You are ignoring the fact that team culture and development is HUGE in turning raw talent into actual NBA stars. At this point the young talent they are acquiring are rotting away in a senseless losing culture and it is terrible for their development.
man i was thinking he was doing a good job and they would start reaping soon. dont they have potentially 4 first round picks next year? best case scenario is 1st and 4th overall no?
It's barely two months since the season started. Okafor should be patient. His transgressions are not Hinkie's fault. What about KJ McDaniels? He had PT in Philly until the Rockets traded for him and now he's down in the Valley. Looks like his second year is going nowhere unless we get an injury or we trade him. Unless you're a major star, your PT is dependent on going to the right team--a combination of the coach's trust and the team's needs. Philly needs a veteran or two to coach up the youngsters, something that MINN is doing.
Sure... but there are high busts drafted every year as well... some years they're even drafted #1. Hinkie's high draft picks have no guarantees of being all-stars, let alone super-duper stars. If you're going to suck royally, you better be sure the players you're in lottery contention for are worth it and not big-time projects or injury-prone... if they're not slam-dunk picks (which all the teams above you mentioned obtained) your strategy has a huge chance of backfiring.
You gotta give Sam Hinkie a lot of credit. He ran the first ever NBA ponzi scheme, and it took 3 years for anybody to do anything about it! That's impressive longevity!
I don't know about you, but I do derive entertainment value from watching Rockets games every year, championship or not. The Rockets have not won a championship in 20 years, yet they have provided a very entertaining product nearly every year by being consistently competitive. Would you be willing to give up watching Rockets basketball for 5-10 years while some mad scientist GM tries to rig the system? Tanking for a year is one thing. But at this rate, there will be an entire generation of Philadelphia kids who never got to see a Sixer team even try to win games. That is ridiculous. I would not tolerate that as an owner. Realistically, the average NBA team is only going to win a championship every 20-30 years. If all you care about is winning a championship, you are not going to have much fun watching basketball most of the time.
Yea well for starters half of those players the kings didn't even draft. The players that the Kings did draft were awful and were stupid picks. The flip side of this argument is a team like the Warriors.
Let me put it this way. I'd much rather go through 3-5 years of horrific basketball if gives me a higher chance to win a championship and acquire a superstar that we can root for for the next 10 years than be a mediocre team like the suns where there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Yes, ideally you'd like a team that is entertaining and gives us a reason to watch the games but in the end I want a GM that strives for 1 thing...and that thing is to hang the championship banner in the Toyota Center.
I don't know about bringing Hinkie back. I think we've been doing fine with out him and I haven't seen anything from him while he's been in Philly.
Lol you won't be watching, much less paying to go to the games, very selfish answer. If this is how they want to go with their process, the fans should just boycott the team both in person and on TV, and just come back when they get that draft pick.
Even if you do tank, it takes quite a bit of luck to be in the right position to get that superstar. It's not like the top 5 are superstars every year. For every one of those players you list, there were busts who had consideration at being picked around that spot. It's really hard to get the draft right. I agree though - I would much rather draft a Dwight Howard than sign him as an older free agent.
Fixed it. Obviously, no one else was considered to be picked instead of LeBron or Duncan...but you get my point!
Last I checked, billionaires didn't make investments to break even or make a slight profit margin. Furthermore, Philly is one of the storied sports cities in all of sports and having such a bad team for so long is a blight on the NBA. Noone wants this losing to continue. It was acceptable in the first two years when it looked like by year three there would be a plethora of talent to benefit from, but poor selections (especially with injury riddled players) have defeated the strategy and created a black hole of talent. It now looks like an endless cycle of losing to hopefully get one player that they have shown no ability to accurately scout and draft. but yeah.... they're doing ok and morey is reading your posts.
Sam Hinkie's "strategy" is a disgrace to the league and sports in general. On top of that, there's no guarantee that it will pay off. Just horrible management.
