Those are both good. Almost any USB 3 portable hard drive will work.

I've had a Fantom 7200RPM 2TB USB 3.0 since November and it works great.

Yep, I hopped on the 500 gb version. Also got $100 off by trading in an old 360. Came out to $277 after taxes, not bad.

So I finally got an Xbox One on Black Friday.

Oddly enough, What I really wanted was the Elite controller, and the XB1 itself was sort of incidental. Since the Elite controllers are all sold out and are selling for $225+ (and I really wanted one), I figured Amazon's XB1 elite bundle for $450 was essentially buying the elite controller, and then getting a 1TB hybrid XB1 for the low, low price of $225.

The controller, to me, was worth-it. I destroy my controllers... notsomuch that I treat them badly or use them hard, it's just that I put in a lot of time with them. It feels much nicer in the hands than the regular controller, the stick movement is wonderful (beyond wonderful, really), the trigger locks are great, the option to have a higher stick on the right is great, and the extra paddles seem like they could be useful. And most importantly, the construction just seems really high-quality, such that it will last just about forever. Very impressed.

On the downside, I bought a Kinect in order to 1) Skype from my couch with high-quality video, and 2) navigate with hand-gestures, because I just thought that was a cool idea. Only when I tried and failed to get the hand gestures to work did I figure out via a Google search that Microsoft removed it.

Why? Was the functionality really that bad? I would've loved to play around with it, even as just a novelty. Is there any use for this thing other than Skype? Do people find themselves using the voice commands for anything other than launching apps? Are there any good games that make use of it?

No one used it apparently, and it had issues with responsiveness. No, not really unless exercise games are something you really like. It's worth it alone for the voice commands though. (Three words: "Xbox, record that.") I generally have a cover on it at all times, but use the voice commands.

I have an elite controller, it legit wins me 2-3 fights a game (halo5) that I probably would have lost otherwise just due to being able to outmaneuver people.

It's a much better controller, it isn't close. If it breaks I'm buying another.

They probably removed it because it barely functions, like the voice command. All the artificial "hype" from the usual posters on this board over MS products was as I figured, exaggerated.

If you can, you should save your money and return the kinect. Not worth it and MS already dropped support for it less than a year after release.

Im so used to turning on/off my tv, changing channels, changing volumes, etc... with the kinect that I get annoyed when I have to pick up a remote. For example, when I get home and before I've even put my bag down, I say "Xbox On"….by the time I get to my couch, I say "Xbox watch TV"…and when Im sitting, the tv is already on and ready to roll. Basically, things get ready for me before Im actually in the living room. And when its time to go, I literally say "Xbox turn off" as Im leaving the room. Those functions have worked very nicely for me and Im completely used to it.

Turning on my TV without picking up a remote would be kind of cool. But is there a way to separate the turning on/off of the TV, from the turning off/on of the Xbox?

Also, what are the really good console exclusives? I originally planned to get, for example, Dead Rising 3 and D4 for it, but those were both later released for PC.

So the only games I have for it right now are Gears of War Ultimate and Rare Replay. I plan to get MCC when it gets cheaper. Considering Crimson Dragon, though when I read more about it, it's apparently more an "inferior Panzer Dragoon," than "another Panzer Dragoon." Considering Forza Horizon 2, though I'm not big into non-Burnout racing games. And I'm hoping Scalebound, Crackdown 3, and Quantum Break are good when they're released.

Am I missing anything major that's not on PC?

And for the stuff that is also on PC, are any of them waaay better played in the living room than on the PC, for whatever reason?

I'm in the same boat. I've gotten so used to using Kinect for anything TV related. Whether it's changing the channel (in most cases) or saying "xbox volume up/down", just makes it really easy. My TV remote always gets lost so it's beneficial for me.

My whole power up sequence with XBox One doesn't work right every time I power up. I don't have my XBox One in standby mode. But, every time I boot up and turn on all my devices, the TV never gets the signal. I have to sit there and turn the TV off and then back on anywhere from 2 - 5 times just to get the signal working on the TV. I run the HDMI from DirecTV into XBox One and then into the HDTV HDMI input. I run the audio to the 5.1 receiver separately and don't use the TV audio.

I don't know how to get this f**king thing working right where it just all turns on and works the first time. Anyone have similar problems? I guess it might work if my XBox One is in standby mode but I would rather not have it in that mode.

I bought one of those tv tuners mentioned earlier and paired it with one of the indoor Leaf antennas and it works great. The updates to the OneGuide make it pretty full featured with an OTA signal. Channel guide and live TV pause too.

With TV signal now in place, along with Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Hulu, etc and gaming it's pretty much become the primary living room box for us. If the supposed DVR update gets pushed that would make it pretty complete.

I think I would appreciate it more as a media device if I didn't have a smart TV. Since I have a smart TV, I feel like using a separate device to watch Netflix or use my media server is a silly waste of power (standby mode for the Xbox, likewise, seems like a waste of power to me... I don't use standby on my PS4, either).

At the moment I'm weighing whether to try to return the Kinect, or if I want to keep it solely for convenient Skyping, and just hope I find more use for it later.

I hope they make Modern Warfare 2 backwards compatible soon.

The IR from the Kinect is not getting to the IR receiver on your TV. That's what it is. Have you tried positioning your Kinect right next to where your TV receives the IR signal? You should try that just to test it out.

I'm hearing all of the COD series are not going to be granted backwards compatibility.

No...it is. I use my Logitech Harmony remote to turn everything on and set it to the correct inputs. The first item in the sequence is it turns on the XBox One and the last items in the sequence is it turns the Samsung HDTV on and switches to the HDMI input. But, the XBox One takes a bit to boot up and log in. Even so...when it sends the signal to the TV...the TV acts like it can't detect the signal. Even if I use the remote to change the TV input to another input and back to the HDMI input...it still doesn't pick up the signal. The only thing I have found that works is to turn the TV off and back on until it picks up the signal. And, I usually have to do this multiple times so its frustrating.

I also noticed that sometimes if I wait long enough...the XBox one landing page will display on the TV. But, then when I say "Watch TV" to the Kinect...it goes to the TV and the signal goes out again meaning I have to turn the TV off and on until it works.

It's so ridiculous. I think it's specific to my model of Samsung TV because I had a Sony before in this room and never had the issue. It's something about the TV not picking up the signal correctly and it may be related to delays powering on the XBox One from a cold start...or not having like a two minute delay between turning the XBox One on and powering on the TV...which is ridiculous as well.

I guess I'm pretty much screwed. I could try doing XBox One instant on mode and not have it turn everything else on but let my Harmony Remote do that...and see if that works. But, then my XBox One is drawing power in standby mode...which I'm not a big fan of wasting energy. But, if it works, then I may go there anyway.

I just find the whole thing screwy.
