Because Chris Davis is an MVP caliber player with a pretty good OBP. If you have a chance to acquire a guy like that (at a reasonable price), you just do it - lineup philosophy/etc be damned.

It would be ludicrous for any business to let an uneducated customer affect a business decision that would damage the product or delay a product from being available for years. The product the Astros appear to be trying to sell is a "World" Series Championship team. I want to buy that product and I want it as soon as possible within legal, ethical means. If the Astros do that in a manner that goes against what I think is smart, I'll still be happy if they succeed. Granted, it is easier watching a team lose when it makes sense that they are trying to get better as quick as possible...even if it involved more losing first.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/robbie-grossman Just found this. Robbie Grossman apparently rejected a six year $13.5million dollar contractual agreement prior to last year. Ouch!!
I hope this team doesnt get a championship hangover like the rockets did this year but without a championship. Stay humble and keep putting that work.
Luhnow: (Rule 5 draft) Joe Musgrove, if we left him unprotected, he'd be the first pick pitching for someone else. That won't happen. There's a long list of players. We have until tomorrow. (Could Musgrove slot in the bullpen?) I like him as a starter. He has all the pitches he needs. We'll benefit most by developing him as a starter. Musgrove may not be in the big leagues this year but is close. Definitely see him competing for a spot [the year after]. (Mark Appel joining staff?) Appel will pitch for the Astros in 2016. Whether that's opening day, May or June, I don't know. He's ready to go. He'll be with us this offseason. There will be an opportunity, opening day or after that. ... He's still on my time schedule. I thought 2016 and here we are. (What big deals?) As an outside observer, you can safely assume we're looking at pitching. Main focus is on pitching. We'll have to replenish left side of the pen. 12 conversations with 12 different teams today. Of course for 100 conversations, you maybe only get one trade. The trade today, we had been talking Villar for a couple of weeks. This morning, I texted Stearns, he texted back and a deal was made. ... We had been scouting him since he was in college. (Vince Velasquez?) He'll start as a part of the rotation and then go from there. (What FAs excite you?) Ton of starting pitchers. Variety of players at all positions. We've checked in with agents & players and who will go when & where. -I'd predict at least one or two trades and one or two FA signings. (Most glaring need?) Need is bullpen. Replacing Tony Sipp and role Perez played and insurance for the rotation. Relief market takes time to get going. A lot of trade & FA possibilities. (Payroll?) We don't work towards a number. Jim & I have had very few payroll conversations because I feel like I have what I need. I feel supported by the ownership group. (Tyler White) High contact, good power, high average, good-eye hitter. He'll be in the big leagues next year, it's a matter of finding a spot for him.
Which makes me curious on what his next move will be to address that. He wouldn't make a statement that if he didn't already have something in the works. I mean Sipp was so reliable that I almost felt relaxed whenever he came into a game but can understand if Luhnow feels that may or may not last.
Sign me up for davis, if its only a 5 year deal that would be awesome. 5 yrs at 90 mil or so is pretty fair if we could get it. Let reed play dh and include white in a trade for a reliever. Altuve Springer Correa Davis Gomez Reed Colby Lowrie/marwin Castro Thats a very very legit lineup
Sipp wants to get paid like a 8th inning relief pitcher. Luhnow wants to pay Sipp to be the 7th inning relief pitcher. I suspect that Luhnow will wait this one out. If Sipp is still available late in the offseaason, Luhnow may resign him.
ESPN (for what its worth...which is very litte) has HOU as 1 of the 5 candidates for Jose Fernandez. What a move that would be! http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/p...tential-trade-destinations-for-jose-fernandez
