He is an absolute awesome GM IMO, but some of the best still make mistakes. Heard the guys on NBATV last night talking about how the rockets live and die by the 3pt shot and how they really don't have any real good or true 3pt shooters save Jason Terry. If the rockets aren't hitting their 3s then they mentioned how their defense falls apart at times. It was a thing of beauty last night in the 4th quarter to see Harden down near the block posting up and giving the Blazers a different look from inside out instead of attacking from the perimeter. You can envision by mid season Ty Lawson feeding Harden off of his post ups but its still going to take time to integrate Lawson into the offense.
To the extent there's truth behind the theme of this entire thread.....this is the post that unpacks it in the most logical way. Ultimately, it may be that Les is pissed that they just gave this guy an extension on Morey's advice....and now are having to cut ties so quickly.
whoevers idea it was to prematurely extend mchales contract is who should be in the hotseat. maybe it was Morey
It was, and it was December of last year IIRC. I love Morey - but maybe, just maybe his ties to the Celtics from his childhood sort of clouded his vision a bit? DD
Getting rid of Morey would send the Rockets back to the dark ages. Regardless of the outcomes of the last few years, Morey has done a fantastic job building this team. We are also always in the conversation of marquee free agents. They will go to what their needs require, and often times, the Rockets have been the choice. Morey is a top 3 GM in the league IMO. Unfortunately, basketball analytics don't predict player's personality issues and that's what I believe is going on this season.
man some fans are absolutely delusional and just dumb, Russillo and Kennel had a former NBA exec on ESPN Radio and all agreed he was one of if not the best GMs in the league
Morey to me is the best GM in today's game. The way he was able to obtain two superstars, without drafting them, is something that GMs look up to. There have been some really delusional threads/posts here on CF. Think most of nonsense is from the very young fans who don't remember the Carroll Dawson age. If he leaves, just watch how fast this team goes in the dumps again
True...BUT... I dont understand how you assemble a team with poor 3 pt AND FT shooters..when your offense is built around those philosophies.
Morey's smarter than that. The contract extension was a result of McHale's agent causing some tension about getting one. Les probably had some influence as well.
To be fair to Morey, let's not act like this team was his ideal finished product - not even close. He went after Bosh and Melo - both would fit much better with our offensive scheme. Going after Bosh lost us Parsons, and got us Ariza as a consolation prize. He's going to go hard after KD, an efficiency god.
I don't think morley hired coach mchale because he was a childhood hero but more for the reason that mchale would not call him out for his crazy experiments, like the acquisition of the 2009 draft, 1 billion smallpowerforwards or the yearly overhauls. Most head coaches will not tolerate that. my favorite quote from the fuhrer era, after hasheem the dream is acquired, "I don't know what I'm supposed to do with him." =)
This is also on Les. In another thread, cybrex said Les and Morey "made a deal." My speculation is that deal was to give Morey full power over the coaching staff selections and offensive direction -- to play 3 and layups whether the players fit that mold like GSW, SAS and ATL or not. 3 and Layups is really about having a motion offense with some 40% 3pt shooters to get the defense spinning their heads ...but I digress. It is also on Les for not creating a balanced management team. Both GM and Coach need balanced authority to balance Morey Ball -- to inject into it the chemistry, fit, effort, leadership, character, pride, intelligence by trading, signing and drafting players the fit both Morey's ability to swing deals with incredible CBA skills and salary-cap management and the Coach's philosophy on who to fit around the superstar and what offense to use. Les turned his back on NBA management team balance when he showed Rudy and CD the door.
Then morey should be held accountable. Not saying we should get rid of him, but Les just had to eat 12 Million dollars. Sure he has a lot of money, but when a decision costs that much money, best believe people are going to be held accountable.
This is very fair critisism. BUT it's not like there's a science or a method to acquire chemistry. Noone knows how teams get it or lose it. It is luck.
I think people forget that it was Les that pushed the extension of McHale. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...new-contract-latest-details-comments-reaction Alexander: "I didn't want to let anybody else have a chance to get him if he was a free agent."
