Is there anyone that doesn't believe Tom Thibodeau is a top 5 coach in the NBA? For my money, it's Pop, Carlisle, Budenholzer, Kerr, and Thibodeau. It's not often a top 5, and bare minimum top 10, coach is just sitting out there waiting. Maybe he's not interested but if there is anyway you can convince him to take the job, you do whatever you have to do. He's one of the best defensive coaches in the game, gets the most out of his players, and shows true passion on the sidelines. These are ALL attributes this team desperately needs. We run NO offensive system right now other than ISO ball and launch the 3. This team has the offensive firepower. Now, we need a coach that gets them to play D. PLEASE MOREY AND LES!!!!!!!!
You said in your previous post that it wasn't Kerr's offensive system that made the difference. But the thing is..IT was. And it's not streetball. They have a lot of plays and sets. The one who doesn't have any plays is us.
Yes me. He's not top 5 coach in the NBA. SVG is better than him. Kidd is better than him. Stevens is better than him. Malone is better than him. Rivers is better than him. I also think that Snyder is better than him. Becuase his in game adjustments and end of game plays are AWFUL. His offence is stagnant and unimaginitive and utterly predictable. And in fact because this is a copy league almost all of his defensive plays have been already copied in the majority of the teams in the league.
I also think that Brett Brown Philly's coach is better than him. But you can do so much with what you have.
I keep checking every hour for a Feigen tweet or some cryptic message on here from an insider how something tangible is going to change.. but it's not gonna happen :/.
LMAO those guys are not better than thibs. Stevens is the only one that could get in the conversation.
Alvin Gentry is primarily responsible for the Warriors offense. Indeed, often times Kerr would come to Gentry with his vague ideas and Gentry would implement them. Kerr had a philosophy, and Gentry shared that philosophy and made it happen. Having Gentry and Adams was a huge reason for the Warriors success last year, they set the foundation and could implement what Kerr wanted to do.
Ok ... by 'system' I meant a complicated, rigid set of instructions/orders given by the coach to be carried out on the court by the players Of course they have offensive and defensive principles that are consistently preached by the coaching staff But on the floor, they play so well because they play freely and together with full effort on both ends the whole game That is the brilliance of Kerr's coaching, not X's & O's Just look at this article ... everyone is talking about general offensive principles that Kerr instilled in the team, many of which are as old as basketball itself http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2271582-how-the-golden-state-warriors-offense-has-evolved-under-steve-kerr - "During his playing days, Kerr was always best in the triangle offense ... Though he hasn't tried to install that system in the Bay Area as Derek Fisher has for the New York Knicks, he's definitely taken some of the principles from it." - "The biggest principle, even with the two-man games that have become common, would be the necessity of having nearly every position touch the ball" - "some Spurs looks, in terms of fast ball movement and lots of guys 'looping,'" ESPN Insider David Thorpe told Kevin Pelton (subscription required). "Quick ball screens and handoffs, too. Very nice pacing and two-man games all over the court." - "allowing Klay Thompson to bring the ball up the floor and initiate offense" - "having Bogut make use of his ball-handling and passing skills far more often" - "Kerr has used enough ball movement and screens to create advantageous matchups" - "Constant movement, both of players and the ball, is key" Stuff like 'looping' and 'two-man games' is not what I would call a system of set plays ... that's basic basketball stuff that grade-school kids can do Hell, Bogut himself probably best sums up how 'hands-off' Kerr's offensive system really is: "It feels so easy and free. The flow is there. There's rhythm. Guys have easy knockdown shots. I can read the game well enough to go into a pick-and-roll or hit guys going backdoor." Right there you have one of Kerr's own players describing how his coach's 'system' is really just giving the players the freedom and confidence to DECIDE the best play for themselves, on the court, in real time, simply by reacting to the defense The reason such a basic, uncomplicated, free-flowing style is so effective is that ALL the players are on the same page and willing to sacrifice individual glory to win games with max effort ... not any strategic advantage the Head Coach brings to the sideline
Yes they are. What is Thibs good at except from Defence? Xs and Os? In game adjustments? End of game plays? Tell me. Oh and he isn't even good at motivating his players since we saw the lockeroom problems in his last year. Every coach depends on his assistants and every good coach handpicks his own assistants. We saw Gentry and we see him again how good he is as a head coach. But sure Kerr was only beause of Gentry.
Kerr at first was deciding between two systems. He chose the one who fit his players the best (requires good passes and high bball iq). That is too a brilliance of a coach. Just look at the brilliance of one of the best coaches in the NBA. Pop. Pop adjusts his system also in regards to what fits his players best and what is the direction of the league. If you see old Spurs team they play differently than they play now. And now he has to incorporate Aldridge and so far he has done so very well. Because adjusting your system to your players is the no.1 thing a championship caliber coach does. (McHale isn't a championship caliber coach. He is a motivational B phase coach like Skiles and Marc Jackson and it seems he can't even motivate them anymore.
Well ... how about WINNING GAMES The 2010-11 NBA Coach of the Year had a .647 win percentage in the regular season (255-139) for Chicago, second only to Phil in franchise history. That's good for 6th all time amongst coaches with at least 300 games under their belt. HOLDING A TEAM TOGETHER WITH FRANCHISE CORNERSTONE IN LIMBO Star point guard Derrick Rose played only 181 of 394 games because of injuries. Thibodeau was 132-49 (.729) with the 2011 league MVP and 123-90 (.577) without him. He couldn't beat LeBron and couldn't get along with GM Jim Paxson ... otherwise, he's still doing a fine job in Chicago today What on McHale's coaching resume is more impressive? Or if not Thibs, please submit the exceptional resume for your proposed replacement as head coach ... good luck finding someone else as well-qualified that's also available mid-season and has considerable familiarity with the Rockets organization
Agreed I'd say with all the DRose limbo nonsense the past 3-4 years ... Thibs has done as good a job as any coach in the league at "adjusting your system to your players" by keeping the Bulls afloat and consistently winning Usually pretty good job just to avoid the lottery when that happens year after year ... just ask JVG and Rick with all the TMac/Yao uncertainty Certainly better than anything McHale ever did as a coach until last season
Who said Mchale is better than Thibs? At least Thibs is able through hard practice to get his players play or try in defence. Mchale right now is able to do nothing at all. If Thibs was here the players would be busting their butts as punishment with double two+ hours long practices every off day. But he isn't a top 5 coach in the NBA at all. I hate the Bulls and so I pay a very very close attention to everything they do and their coaching. And Thibs has extremely big deficiencies. Why he didn't use more Mirotic with Taj? Why he didn't give any chance to Doug when he got healthy? He couldn't or even really try to convince 35 year old Pau to come off the bench. But Kerr and Pop would have no problem convincing him. He also was fixated with Kirk Hinrich who shouldn't play any minutes in any team with contending aspirations. Rose wasn't his problem it was his own deficiencies in offence that did him in. Also after a while some players begun tuning him out. I also think that Thibs is a much better coach than Hoidberg and it will be hillarious when the Bulls offence AND defence soon plummets down.
In Hollywood, there are directors, and then there are studio directors. A studio director is someone who will do exactly what he's told. He is handed a script and given a cast, and will direct the movie exactly the way he's told to do. He is just some guy in a suit, a hired gun, easily replaceable, yes sir, no sir, just following order ma'm. As long as Moreyball is in effect at Houston, the Rockets will always have a studio director for a coach.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Morey hired McHale, wasn't it a condition that Morey be allowed to pick the assistant coaching staff? I wouldn't think Thibs would be a fan of that policy, considering his recent experiences with the Bulls front office.
Good stuff. With that said, I think Morey can still find the right coach. If he could have Kerr right now you think he'd say no? I don't. Thib's is a very good coach IMO. But I don't think he's the right coach.
Morey would never hire Thibodeau. Morey needs a yes man as a head coach and Thibodeau is the furthest thing from a yes man ever.
Thibs is the best coach for this team. He's the disciplinarian Harden needs. Thibs has proven that he can make Harden play defense.
