Where is hakeemthagreat? Keep taking **** about prigs, prigs ain't no scrubs okie? The old guy know how to play
Pat Beverley’s absence shows his value to Rockets The pain that began that night in Pat Beverley’s left forearm never ceased, but it has changed. The injury itself no longer agonizes, but Beverley has ached every night as the Rockets play without him, with his absence growing more conspicuous through each round of the playoffs. “It’s frustrating, very frustrating due to the fact that these are moments you grow up as a child looking towards,” Beverley said. “You want to play against the Chris Pauls, the (Rajon) Rondos, the Steph Currys. That’s something you grow up wanting to do. This year, I haven’t been able to compete against those guys in the post season. “I think it’s been every round, from (J.J.) Barea, to Chris Paul to Austin Rivers, Steph Curry. Those are guys I go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning wanting to play against. It’s just a very unfortunate situation.” The Rockets were able to handle the Mavericks and rally against the Clippers without Beverley. But with Curry and the Warriors taking a 3-0 lead in the series, Beverley’s absence pointed to his value because he has what most would describe as the Rockets’ greatest need against Curry and the Warriors. “I think I have a gift very few people have,” Beverley said. “I know I’m the best on-ball defender in the NBA. I’m the best point guard defender in the NBA. I think the whole league knows that.” Because of that talent – Beverley was named to the All-Defensive team second team after the 2013-14 season – Beverley said he is “not at all” concerned with how his injury and the time he has been out would impact his stock as a free agent. Beverley will be a restricted free agent this off-season, giving the Rockets the right to match any offer sheet he signs. Because they have “Bird” rights to him and will operate above the salary cap, the Rockets will be able to make other free agency moves and still keep Beverley, rather than having to fit him into salary cap space. That should greatly improve their chances of keeping their point guard and captain, though NBA rules now prevent them from commenting about their plans, even in regard to their own player. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey could, however, say how much Beverley has meant to the Rockets before his injury and could have helped had he been able to complete the season. “He’s been critical,” Morey said of Beverley’s play since he signed him out of the Russian League in January, 2013. “We feel with Pat healthy this is a different series right now.” Multiple injuries have limited Beverley to 56 games each of the past two seasons. He has been a double-digit scorer in both seasons as a starter. He has made 40.1 percent of his shots overall and 36.1 percent of his 3s in his three NBA seasons, but his greatest contributions have been on the other end of the floor, where he has been a disruptive defender at the point of the Rockets defense. Having paid dues through stints in Greece, Ukraine and Russia, Beverley, 26, looked at free agency as a chance to finally earn considerably more than the NBA minimum. “I put myself in position these last couple years to be successful and take care of my family for the rest of my life,” Beverley said. “I’ve been here three years on a minimum contract. At the end of the day, I have to understand business is business.” Asked what he will seek as a free agent, Beverley said, “To get the money I want with the team I want to be with, which is the Houston Rockets. It’s not up me. It’s up to the man above. Other than Him, it’s up to Daryl Morey and my agent (Kevin Bradbury.) It’s one thing in my life I don’t completely have control of. I have to be patient.” Patience has been a challenge. He believed he could heal more quickly than the four months of recovery time that doctors predicted, citing his comebacks last season from an abdominal injury early in the season and a knee injury late in the year. He tried to wear braces to protect the wrist and allow him to play, but the Rockets never considered that a viable option and he soon agreed. He has continued to work out with his left wrist still in a cast, but those sessions have been unable to ease his frustration. “I usually shoot all the time,” Beverley said. “I can’t dribble. I’m able to catch and shoot. I’m able to do workouts that are strictly only shooting. I had a hand brace, very short. I cut the thumb out. But like everything else, everything was fine. I just couldn’t dribble with it.” Instead, he is around the Rockets at home games, tries to lead from the bench, but never really adjusts. Beverley knew he needed to be playing as much as the Rockets needed him. Unable to play, he has been no more patient waiting for the day he can resume his grueling ballhandling drills or complete free agency than he is with an opposing point guard bringing the ball up the court. “Me, my mindset, just being here, being around the guys, it’s something I’m not used to,” Beverley said. “I’ve been hurt before, but never this significantly, to get surgery and be out (this long). It’s new water for me. I’m trying to find ways to cope with it.”
Call me a pessimist, but I don't think Bev would make that much of a difference. I thought he was terrible this season.
He was terrible. But to his credit he shows up in the playoffs and plays big. He's the of role player you want on your team in the playoffs. And I hated him during the regular season.
You know, I tend to agree with you. I didn't think he was having a very good year before the injury. Fans are remembering the more distant past.
I don't think his knees were ever right for most of this year. The Rockets often had to switch Ariza onto the opposing PGs when Beverley could not handle them. There is a chance that he was "saving it" for the playoffs, but we'll never know.
No, he doesn't. He gets injured before the playoffs. That's actually the biggest reason I want no part of him next season unless it's for cheap(3-4 mil/yr) and in a backup role. He cannot stay healthy once the postseason approaches. You can't invest big money in a player with that kind of track record.
Yes Bev wasnt playing as well...but, we need some fire...and that is clearly missed. He would foul hard...get into people's face...make Curry lose his cool. We need an irritant, but we just have a bunch of nice dudes... Bev also wouldnt allow the large number of wide open jumpers that Curry has had so far this series. In close games, Patrick Beverley shows up.
ya i wondered why he didn't just get the knee fixed at the same time while his arm's in a cast….could have come back at the same level of 2 seasons ago
Funny how Bevs out the lineup and we're getting destroyed by opposing guards. I hope ppl appreciate him more now that we our current guards giving up layup drills
Come on brah, all bev does is foulin ppl with the ball, not lock down defender anymore, and he keeps getting injured
He's been injured but don't tell me his defense isn't missed at this point. Bev's defense hid alot of Harden's weaknesses last year. Everybody said he was replaceable but watching us now we NEED Bev out there more than ever. Watching guys get backdoored & beat off the dribble consistently is what Bev would stop
Beverley is a backup PG who only has to start because Harden can't play with true PGs and Lawson is useless.
