Those are very different scenarios. Both teams were mediocre ballclubs the prior season(well, the Cavs were horrendous actually) and were integrating one of the best players of all-time. There was going to be a period of adjustment. And in the case of the Cavs, they were also playing for Blatt who'd never coached in the NBA before.

The Rockets are basically the same team that won 56 games last year and reached the WCF. The only changes are Harrell in place of Smith and the additions of Thornton(who's shooting great so far) and Lawson(who's coming off a terrific season). They should've come into this season on a tear picking up right where they left off. Instead they look like a bunch of scrubs who just met.

morey will rebuild on the fly. he's not afraid of pulling the trigger on mid-season trades. right now i'd say we have the following players on the block:

    1. beverley - lost his edge on defense. always injured. terry gives us the same thing for cheaper.
    2. brewer - can't find his offense. losing his minutes to thornton.
    3. jones - hasn't improved since his second year. harrell waiting in the wings.

Sending KJ to the d league didn't make sense if you are gonna cut Brewers minutes.

Who gets fired first? Rick Smith or Kevin McHale?

Morey is in serious denial if he thinks trades are what this team needs. I'm not saying you don't look to improve the roster, but McHale's been gifted one of the most talented Rockets teams ever and he's squandering it.

Add Lawson to the list. He is useless on both ends of the court.

Those are a lot of changes. Harrell is new, Lawson is new, Thornton is new, Smith is gone, Motiejunas is out, and they were all hurt this preseason and never got a chance to work out any kinks.

It's a bigger change than we think.

But yeah, the circumstances aren't exactly the same, but maybe the talent can win out in the end. It may just take some time.

Our defense seems to be to let them shoot, hope they miss.

I don't buy the absence of D-Mo as a valid excuse. They did just fine without him in April and May last season. Harrell and Thornton have done well enough that they shouldn't be disrupting the chemistry. Lawson does look lost, but that doesn't explain the horrific defense and how lost everyone seems to look at times on offense.
