I don't think the major problem among most GMs is overpaying.....it's overestimating their teams ability to win. They overcommit at the wrong point in their cycle. I'm not sure the Rockets are there yet either, not because they aren't going to be a very good team this year, but because the Warriors are just that good. So in my mind there's two goals.....try to win now, but don't compromise your ability to add another star in free agency. Accumulating picks/assets falls to a distant 3rd. The Rockets are not the 76ers right now. Philly is happy to take on bad contracts in return for assets. The Rockets can't afford any bad contracts, and they already have a stockpile of assets sufficient for a competing team. While it's important that every trade makes sense in and of itself, it also has to be viewed in a broader context. Otherwise trades like Brewer, Prigioni, or signing Papa to the MLE wouldn't make sense.
I agree that DMo is near untouchable. If you've read some of the transcripts from Morey's recent interviews, you can tell the Rockets are very earnest to get him back. The Rockets don't have to include Brewer if they don't want to. They could trade McDaniels and TJones for Marvin, but then I would want a pick back, and the Rockets would be sitting at 13 players with near zero ability to add to the roster since they would be right at the apron. You bring up a good point about Thornton. Here's another way to look at it....let's say you've decided to go small. How would you distribute the additional minutes to your bench between Beverley, Thornton, and Brewer? Obviously they all do different things, but I have a hard time seeing the Rockets sacrifice the shooting they get from the first 2.
I've really learned to appreciate what DMo gives the team over the past two seasons .... with Dwert out he held the interior defense down admiralty. Not the shot blocker Dwert is but still protected the rim very effectively with vertical defense. That's an interesting point - any trade that sends out more players than it brings in is going to leave them under the roster limit but assuming they send out equal or greater salary to what they take in , they have a couple ways to fill any empty roster spots - 1- A vet min contract which they have space for currently since they cut Hayes. 2- The Shved TPE which is ~$1.6m. Not at all sure if this allows them to exceed the hard cap but if it is , maybe you get a team who's mailed it in to give up a player who can help for a 2nd round pick. They would be able to add at least 1 player. As to the minutes between PatBev , Brewer & Thornton .... Once Jones comes back , I see Thornton as the odd man out , at least for now. But I believe he can give you most of what Brewer does defensively and is a better shooter. He keeps this up , I think he makes Brewer expendable. I don't like the idea of trading both Brewer & KJ as it leaves you ultra thin at the 3 spot. You do have Dekker who is a 3-4 but he's just not ready. I'd prefer to add Dekker to Brewer / Jones than KJ as he's currently pretty much a Brewer clone. Might be a better defender but slightly worse shooter .... and is pretty dynamic on the break. For the record , Jones , Brewer & Dekker are the only three players on this roster I'd be comfortable moving this season. (Maybe Lawson if things don't work out but we are far from that point)
Recently heard that Net is aggressively looking for a trade. How about T-Jones for Thaddeus Young? Maybe we need to add some piece to balance it out the deal. Stretch 4?
Thaddeus Young imo is vastly overpaid and also doesn't play good defence. The Nets once again were idiots. Let them sleep on their bed.
I like Thad Young the player, but he's got a bad contract. $50 million over the next 4 years with a player option 4th year and a 15% trade kicker. Horrible contract.
I would take that in a heartbeat. Everyone overrates tjones value. If he was incoming to my team I would give a second round pick for him. I think Brewer has a little value but it's deteriorating with his play this year. Would love this trade even if we had to exchange our first round for a second round pick as well. Late first vs early second and Williams can spread the floor and rebound not sure about his defense yet though haven't watched enough. Plus is an expiring contract I think frees up space for durant chase but not positive how all that works
In December: Sacramento In: Brewer, KJ, Gibson, Noah Rockets In: Cousins, Brooks Bulls In: Jones, Bev, protected 1st rounder from Houston, Jason Thompson Probably can't/won't ever happen.
Everyone overrates tjones value? I am one of the few that doesn't think that Jones is worth something here. And it's because of the constant brainwashing troll agenda by a few posters in this forum. When you get Jones or DMO you get someone very young that hasn't reached their peak yet and their new contract will be the most productive but when you get Marvin Williams you get a finished product that from now on most likely won't improve, he will stay the same or decline. Teams (will) pay for future production not only current. Just asking here..but why is Sacramento giving up the all star and getting back all the crap? They are shortsighted but they are not braindead. The way Noah plays the past two years brings joy to my Bulls hating heart. (jason thompson is in GSW. He was a part of the Stauskas trade with Philly).
Well I don't watch much of Kings but the little I have watched they play small ball with Gay at the 4 and they also use Cousins at the four next to WCS and Koufos.
I used to be high on "Boogie" Cousins. But now I've looked at Marvin Williams I've converted. In the cost benefits analysis: Marvin Williams all day long. Come join the parade!
Brewer/Jones looks like a boat anchor package right now. Not good at all. Morey far over-hyped Terrence, trying to pump his trade value. I can't see how we can recover much of anything for Terrence now. Hopefully all the posters thinking we can get a first rounder for Terrence now realize that's impossible and we can stop reading that foolishness.
