He's been a sub-30% 3pt shooter for his career. I dunno what kind of correction people are hoping for, but it won't be dramatic. His acquisition def helped us out last year. But this year our needs are different. When DMo and TJones return I hope we keep Thornton in the rotation and take Brewer out.
Once he gets back to his above average finishing, he'll be OK. I can live with the missed junkets* from him knowing that in time he'll get better (if not much better) but he really needs to be able to finish, especially in transition. *autocorrect changed "jump shots" to junkets. I decided to let it stay.
Exactly. I've mentioned this numerous times. Brewer has shot better than 30% only once out of his 8 seasons in the NBA. His career average is .288. Last season, he shot .284 for us. I don't get why so many Rockets fans still think he is a legit 3pt threat. If anybody else shot so poorly, he would be laughed at by us to no end. His offensive value is his speed in transition. He is simply not very good at playing half-court basketball.
I think people forget the positive impact Brewer had on games last season. The starters would sometimes start slow, and Brewer would be substituted in and he was like a burst of energy, and it carried throughout the entire team. And game 6 against the Clippers, Corey Brewer was just as important during that crazy comeback as Josh Smith was. Josh Smith seems to get all of the credit, but Brewer was playing his ass off and getting buckets too.
You're about 2 weeks into the season... and how is he complete trash? This guy you're talking about "benching" has +/- numbers on par with guys like Anthony Davis, Julius Randle, Ryan Anderson, Thad Young, and Rajon Rondo all whom are starters. His PER is on par with guys like Demare Carroll, Giannis Antetonkoumpo, Gordon Hawyard, Harrison Barnes, and Carmelo Anthony. You don't see anyone calling for them to be benched. If anyone really thinks KJ will shoot any better than Brewer be my guest. I like both guys but you're choosing between two athletes with the same weakness expecting one to do better than the other in that category. This is a sh** thread, really.
I keep hearing short term memory as an excuse to support Brewer, but long term memory would cause people to remember how easily Rockets scored with Delfino and a bunch of other bench guys that could shoot the three. Brewer is the best option right now for the minutes he is playing, but Morey should be looking for a replacement.
I wouldn't bury him on the bench but I would only give him his 1st half minutes and if he is still slumping, I'd be willing to look at other options in a close game. Maybe KJ can get it done some nights. Brewer will eventually have what Morey calls a return to the mean. We need to get Harden's minutes down, the dude is playing 40 minutes a game.
In the last 4 games, the Rockets have the 2nd highest offensive rating in the league at 113.8. The only team ahead is Golden State with an offensive rating of 114.0 Their offense isn't a problem.
Honestly I think if Brewer was shooting a mere 28% instead of the 14% he is shooting now a lot less people would be complaining.
Small sample size withstanding, per NBA.com, offensive rating is 108.8 for Rockets for last 4 games. During that stretch, Rockets are 98.4 with Brewer on the floor. With Lawson, Harden, Thronton, Ariza lineup together in the last 4, Rockets offensive rating is 119.4. So, the offense isn't a problem as long as Brewer isn't on the floor and has been producing with Ariza at the 4 similar to the way it did with Delfino at the 4. Over last 4, only people with worse defensive rating for the Rockets are KJ, Dekkar, Terry, and Harrell. I suspect Brewer will get better defensively.
....which is more reason to bench brewer in favor of mcdaniels. Brewer is a complete liability on the defensive end. KJ has great defensive potential.
Just my opinion, but I really think a facilitating big is critical to Brewer's success in the half court. Brew's best season in his career was with Minnesota in 2013-14. Love could stretch the floor, pulling his defender away from the basket, and hit baseline cutters. The only big on the Rockets that can do that is DMo. I wouldn't be surprised if the return of DMo coincided with the return of the Brewer we know and love.
Probably doesn't help that Dwight has been out of the lineup also. Dwight is a very good outlet passer when he gets defensive boards and that helps push the pace when he gets the rebound.
Man... I swear you guys think that DMo is the answer to every Rocket issue... The biggest issue with Brewer is not his talent.. It's his IQ on the court.... Know when to drive, know when to pull-up and wait... Just a small sample. T_Man
Obviously I know what it means. The point was you guys are complaining about a guy in a slump that comes off the bench! First it's Harden, now it's Brewer, once Terrence comes back it will be him again.... Buncha whining losers that's what we have here.
