Except that he won't be pitching for them in 12 years. Regardless of when the money gets paid, they are paying $210MM for 7 years worth of performance and the liability will be on the books based on that. The only impact of deferring is in regards to the Net Present Value of the contract - as someone else said, it basically comes out to about $190MM over 7 years when adjusted for inflation.
I prefer to spend the money on another pitcher, and a healthy Feldman can pitch as good as he did last year.
Could be an Astros post. There has been some linkage.

Winning posting bid for Korean 1B Park Byung-ho: $12.85 million. Fister is a schrewed pickup if it happens. 2 yrs ago he pitched like McHugh did this yr. If you're looking for a #3 that pitches like a #1 in big games then Fister could be that guy on the cheap. It frees up the ability to trade young guys like Appel/Feliz/Feldman etc....... Fister is the kind of guy that will allow a VV/Tucker/Appel/Moran/Singleton etc... for Chapman/Frazier. I'm not saying this will happen, but being in a place where they have the $$$$ and the talent to make a trade like this is a great place to be as an org.
But if its only $15 million/year, it should not limit their financial flexibility while he is playing for them to continue to build towards a contender... which is what everybody is ultimately concerned with when you sign a big-contract player. We can debate the impact of "liability on the books" in what is an uncapped league... where really its up to the owner to consider what is a true liability and what is merely the price of contending (for instance, the profits, media rights deals, and ad money alone after winning a championship may be enough to off-set the deffered Scherzer money over the final 7 years). The Nats are maximizing their ability to contend during the primes of their best players... and the Astros will eventually determine if they need to make those types of additions depending on their window.

We were 6 outs away from the ALCS with a 6 run cusion. Our team is good enough to win a World Series. He is right that the only need is a LHR, since Sipp is a FA. He said we want a lot, because there are areas he'd like to improve (i.e. closer).
If that LHR were Aroldis Chapman, i'd definitely agree we are only a LHR away  Cracks me up how the same people who want Carter and Gattis gone think we should be in on Davis. You only have to go back to the year before last to find a season where Carter was clearly better. I mean i'd rather have Davis, but he is just as big of a gamble as far as knowing what you are going to get And the Morneau suggestion has to be a joke, right?
I think people are blowing that Luhnow quote WAY out of proportion, including MLBTR. I don't see it as Luhnow saying they'll be quiet. I see it as him saying they don't have to be desperate -- and he's right. There's no singular need that's so great that they have to be desperate and spend silly money (and/or give up a ton of prospects). I think they'll make one "big ticket" acquisition, but which one largely depends on the market. Could be SP, could be 1B/LF, could be bullpen, etc. Sort of like what happened at the trade deadline. I doubt they make the Gomez trade if they were able to convince Hamels to drop the NTC... but when Hamels blocked the deal, the next best "value" deal on their board involved a completely different position. To me, that's what it reads like Jeff is saying. There's a lot of things they'd like to do, but they don't know how the market is going to unfold, so they're not going to commit to one particular path.
I really think Luhnow might be in on this one. I've seen Byung-ho expected to get five years $40m. I think this falls nicely into our budget.

Rockies were rumored to be going after Daniel Murphy to play 1st base so I'd be surprised it they won the rights. So I'll go Pirates or Astros. Marlins have Justin Bour at 1st and Mauer is at 1st in Minny with Sano as DH.
Does anyone know much about Byung Ho Park? He's put up 105 HR and 270 RBIs in the last (2) seasons. That obviously wont translate, but what type of player is he? Comparison?
I don't think Davis is nearly as big of a gamble. 3 of his last 4 seasons were better than Chris Carter's best season. 2 of them were MVP-level seasons. Basically, Chris Davis is what we all hoped Chris Carter would develop into. He strikes out just as much, but has a higher BA, OBP, and OPS.
