Last season he had the benefit of a Team USA train camp and tournament. It obviously helped him have an extra pep in his step that he is obviously missing this season early on. The thing is there are many elite NBA players that have the dedication and will power to have just as intensive of an off-season workout regiment without having an obligation to Team USA.

Question his on the court decision making, there's been nothing to suggest that Harden doesn't keep himself in shape. "Discussion", not gossip.
A simple eye test shows that he is definitely a step slower than last season. His lift on his shot is also less.

Seems like his confidence is just shot. Passing up open looks. Taking contested looks. Losing dribbles. I don't know... I'm still very confident he'll turn it around, but we're 5 games in. Better happen fast.

Last summer he was with Team USA. Every player from Team USA started the season blazing. He just carried that the whole year.
Remember: he was on the national team before last season. He was in mid-season form when the season started. And that's why he ran out of gas at the end of last season.
