I'm trying to figure out why and how Kevin Mchale became this untouchable coach, like he's Gregg P or Phil Jackson. Other teams are switching things up and trying to find the best thing for themselves and we have people that are content with a million 3 pointers and Harden iso ball, that's our offense.
The defense and rebounding will get better for sure but Dwight is no Goat. The rest of your comment is trolling at it's best.
He's not untouchable. If we don't get it done this season you can best believe McHale will be fired. Or if we are not playing up to expectation by the all star break, he will get the boot real quick.
sadly, this has already been the common narrative in each of the past couple seasons. this past playoffs, probably a majority of the fanbase was already calling for his firing up until the 4th quarter of game 6 at LA. how much of that win was just the veteran players on the floor and how much was due to the coaching, i honestly cannot say. but prior to that win this team looked downright terrible under mchale's lead. and we didn't look much better in the golden state series. and it's always the same issues popping back up over and over again and through several completely different rosters: lack of effort/intensity, ball stickyness, brainfreezes in crunchtime. and in the postgame interviews it's always somehow on the players and only the players.
No I don't. And I don't really care. There used to be one guy called Rip Van Rocket who used to be famous for doing that but he got banned once he got too hate friendly and tried his luck with Cyber. Anyway back to my point. What did McHale work on all off season? Our defensive schemes are garbage and our offense is ugly. I did not see any off ball movement, I didn't see James Harden cutting to get open looks. On offense Ty is almost negated because he drives into the lane but everyone else is stagnant. We play a typical pick up game offense where everyone can do whatever they want. Unless it's a fast break, our offense absolutely stinks. Go watch GSW, or SAS or even OKC, their ball movement is crisp with people cutting and moving around to get open looks. We force everything and nothing different from last season. When Ty has the ball everyone camps at their position in the 3 point lane. When Harden has the ball same ****ing thing. And let's not even talk about defense. Most of this falls on the idiot McHale. Players like playing for this moron because he lets them do whatever the **** they want with no accountability.
"I didn't coach hard enough. I didn't coach tough enough. I didn't coach smart enough. I have a lot of work to do."
While I respect McHale, JB and the rest of the coaching staff and acknowledge they / McHale did do some great things last year, we will never win a championship if they cannot come up with a better game plan offensively and defensively. It's that simple.
i would have thought that with the security of a longterm contract mchale would now be more willing to admit his own coaching mistakes from time to time instead of pinning 100% of every loss solely on the players. but i guess saying sorry is just not in his nature.
Mchale gets credit for simple things like not playing Harden when he was struggling in game 6 vs clippers when other guys were leading a comeback. I wouldn't trade that game six/series win for mchale to be fired but he's not been a good coach for this team.
Well he hasn't done much to deserve any credit so anything of the slightest positive will be attributed to him. Let's face it. He is a garbage coach and has no idea how to coach such a talented roster. The only reason he has a job still with us is not based on his credentials or his coaching. it's because Morey is a control freak and wants to have authority and say over everything. And McHale being a lackey is the perfect lap dog for Morey.
Accountability is what true fans demand of the team. McHale (and his staff) refuse to be publicly accountable, and yet they somehow expect the players to heed their public criticisms (via the media). Structure requires discipline; discipline requires respect. And, respect is earned. At the pro level (of any industry) -- respect for 'leadership' is demonstrated primarily by one's level of preparation, eagerness to achieve, and commitment to excellence. None of that is possible without a healthy culture of accountability and consequences for right AND wrong actions. The better organizations recruit talent that's inherently self-motivated; they buy in and willingly hold themselves accountable; they excel when the organization demands it, not just when they 'feel like it'. It's no accident that the Rockets, as a team, came out flat, ill-prepared, and utterly confused on both ends of the floor. What's concerning is that they had no answer for a well-coached LOTTERY team on opening night at home. Let's be honest, we saw similar instances of this to start the series against LAC and GSW last postseason. My assessment is that this team lacks character and professionalism. What they showed last night was a product of their summer and preseason. There's no excuse for not being prepared to play. None.
http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterocke...nication-in-waning-days-before-season-starts/ I'd say McHale pretty much nailed it there. We had this coming. Now we're in damage control, trying to lose as few games as possible while we get our act together.
SVG, one of the coaches I wanted for the Rockets instead of McHale, has got Detroit off to a good start 2-0. SVG traded away Monroe and waived Josh Smith to put shooters around Drummond. Marcus Morris and Ersan Ilyasova can both shoot 3s at the SF/PF spot, and together gives Detroit has good length around Drummond. I understand Harden is the go to player on the Rockets, but I still think SVG can better utilize a player like Dwight and would make the Rockets much better than McHale.
I think Morey needs a coach that he won't butt heads with. That's why McHale still has a job. The technical coaches who are proven and have systems they live and die by get annoyed with the GM always trying to tweak the roster.
McHale is just a good listener of the GM, not a real coach. Winning or losing is largely decided by Morey and players. Stop brick a three when you are not a good three point shooter, or you are really behind in the game, that is a basic basketball, but the rockets are not doing that.
TJones got good position in the paint like everyone does against Faried and the Nuggets brought a double - either hard or when Jones put the ball on the floor. Turnovers, blocks by the weakside defender, and/or stagnation almost every time. Yet McHale couldn't figure out how to take advantage of the opposing team doubling the team's worst starter... That's embarrassing.
The thing about McHale is that as a player, he was part of a squad that knew the value of mental toughness, and knew what it took to win. This is not debatable. What might be is his ability to convey that to his players. But more probable is that the players themselves are not listening. Last night was mental ineptitude. Coast at home against a low rated team.
