Eddie Durham, born in San Marcos, was one of the early pioneers of the electric guitar and recorded one of the first electric guitar solos in 1938. He played guitar and trombone with Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and Cab Calloway.

Eddie introduced the instrument to another native Texan, Charlie Christian, born in Bonham, who was the first major electric jazz guitar soloist. Charlie became famous playing with Benny Goodman but also led his own groups. He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1966.

Gary Clark Jr. will end up on this list some day. Very talented and young blues player. Also Freddy King should be on this list.

    Nope, sorry

I was conceived in the Body of Christ, yet born in Illinois.

I've posed this question before to this board, whether I'm allowed citizenship...they say no. We actually have to be born here.

I'm down with that, despite my bad luck that my Dad took me and my mom across boundaries, when I was indeed started in Texas!!!!

    really?

    No Trey

At this point, I'm not even joking. Trey Anastasio was born in Fort Worth, and you are just simply going to ignore him, and at the same time pretend you have a broad range of musical taste.

    this is laughable.

That dirty hippie is about as Texan as Barry White.

He is a hell of a guitar player though. Picture of Nectar is in my top 10 favorite albums of all-time.

Tell that to the Austin and Fort Worth crowds in this 2015 tour when he said he misses Texas and is glad to be home.

Do you want me to post the videos?

Get over it. Trey is the best guitarist in the World, and was born in Fort Worth...yet, for whatever your reasons are, you are going to deny him being from Texas

This was one Baaaaaaaad Man!!! 25yrs after his death he's still #1 in my book!

    Disturbing Fact!!!
Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan was born on October 3, 1954 in Dallas Texas!
I mean, just the fact that he was born in a "Dumpster Town" like Dallas should put him in the top #3!!!

Didn't realize that Gary Clark Jr was born in Austin.

Freddie King was already mentioned (by me)

Jimmie Vaughan should be on the list as well.

    Johnny, not Edgar

Johnny Winter was ripping blues way way back, 1968. He's not my favorite player in the genre because he is a little too fast and loose.

    at Woodstock 1969

Willie Nelson absent from the thread so far is under rated as a guitarist.

As a huge Buddy Holly fan, I wouldn't rate him as the best guitar player ever from Texas. Buddy was an audio production Genius yes..but several here have mentioned better guitarists.

    Albert Collins
    Billy Gibbons
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
