Its also interesting to note that no team since has relied on a run and shoot system, Givens and Jeffires had minimal success without that system (or Moon), Jim Eddy and Jack Pardee never found NFL work again, and Gilbride never adopted the run and shoot as his "system" (even though he was the play-caller) at his brief HC and other OC stints.
Compared to the teams that was winning super bowls during that period.... I'm surprised they got as far as they did. How many HOF'ers were on that team besides Moon and an offensive lineman...? How many HOF'ers did Montana, Aikman, Young, and other quarterbacks who won super bowls had...? I hate to disappoint you but quarterbacks don't win by themselves.
Troy Aikman has got to be one of the most overrated QBs of all time. He had literally a Pro Bowl offense around him the majority of his career and was absolutely terrible when they started to lose talent.
Maybe, but having your owner stick you with annoying ex-coach after your two best years just so he could win a dare would probably put you on autopilot. Imagine if the Celtics replaced Bill Fitch with Bobby Knight.
You want to know how many 49ers are in the HOF that Montana played with? Rice, Lott, Fred Dean, and now Haley. So Montana had a grand total of ONE player on the offense that he played with (Young doesn't count because they both played the same position). Nobody is disputing that Moon was a good qb....he's in the HOF. It's nice to have an opinion, but putting him on the same level as Montana makes YOU look foolish.
Isn't that more than Moon played with...??? And as I recall they say defense wins championships (and Young also had Sandars). Also Rice is considered the GOAT by many and Irvin calls him 'Jesus in cleats'... The 49ers also had a HOF coach who many consider the greatest offensive mind of all time and they had a hellofa running back as well. And how many championships did Montana win with Kansas City and how good was Young in Tampa... If team and coaching didn't matter they would have won championships away from San Francisco. Yea. I'm sure the 49ers, Dallas, etc. would have sucked if they had Moon, Elway, Marino, or Johnny U... And Houston would have definitely won championships if they had Montana instead of Moon
You realize Montana won not one but TWO Super Bowls before Rice was a 49er. Are Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, and Earl Cooper HOFers? Have you ever heard Bellichick say to his teams, "do your job". You can talk about the defense, who the coach was, etc etc. Montana played in FOUR Super Bowls. He threw eleven TD's and not ONE interception. He did his freakin job. Moon holds the all-time record for the most fumbles (all-time) in the postseason (16). He threw 17 TD's and had 14 INT's in the playoffs. I'm done going back and forth with you. If you want to put Moon in the same category as Montana have at it.
So you're comparing Moon's coaches to Belichick and Walsh... Lol.. Obviously you think coaches have no value. Also I was under the impression Moon played in 10 post season games (not 16) and he had to throw a lot more than Montana in a non-passer friendly league and opposing teams knew it. I also thought Montana didn't throw any interceptions in the super bowls... But in 4 playoff games with KC he threw 6 TD's and 4 interceptions. But you feel free to believe Bill Walsh and the 49ers would have sucked if he had Moon instead of Montanta or Young.

They were both past their primes... Moon also went on to additional playoff teams and pro bowls after he left Houston.
I loved me some Warren Moon. I literally cried after the Buffalo Fiasco. However, comparing Moon to Montana is beyond reasonable. I guess that is why we are called fan(atic)s.
I'm a big Montana fan, but at this point, I think Brady is the best that has ever played the game. If he actually plays 10 more years at even close to this level, I feel bad for the rest of the league. The NFL is the matrix, and at this point in his career, Brady is Neo. Everything is in slow motion.
Apparently Brady has lost multiple LTs this year and has a bunch of rookies on his OL. Or so I've heard.
