With a big enough storm surge even cement houses can suffer major damage. In the wake of Haiyan and Katrina I saw several concrete buildings severely damaged. With this storm it looks like the lack of damage is due to the storm passing through just the right spot that spared major population centers.

The NHC has declared Patricia as dead but I see a blowup of convection around the Brownsville area. Some of the models have been showing a hybrid type storm develop along the coast and it looks to be playing out. We will see soon if anything develops at the surface as this thing hits the water. Even if something develops the major concern is still the flooding rains for the entire area so don't read too much into this post. http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bi...on&palette=ir1.pal&numframes=25&mapcolor=gray
Such a crazy hurricane season. No direct hits by hurricanes, but two states with major flooding issues with nearly as much damage and destruction directly due to tropical moisture patterns fed from strong adjacent hurricanes.
