    http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/ben-carson-if-you-accept-evolution-you-dismiss-ethics#.polAV027Q

Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a noted creationist, once said those who believe in evolution “dismiss ethics” and believe you don’t have to abide by a moral code.
“Ultimately, if you accept the evolutionary theory, you dismiss ethics, you don’t have to abide by a set of moral codes, you determine your own conscience based on your own desires,” Carson told Adventist Review, the magazine of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of which Carson is a member for a 2004 cover story.
The interview can be read online via the Web Archive, which archives webpages.
“You have no reason for things such as selfless love, when a father dives in to save his son from drowning,” Carson continued. “You can trash the Bible as irrelevant, just silly fables, since you believe that it does not conform to scientific thought. You can be like Lucifer, who said, ‘I will make myself like the Most High.’”
BuzzFeed News reported last week that Carson in a 2012 speech said the big bang theory was part of the “fairy tales” pushed by “highfalutin scientists” as a story of creation and he believed the theory of evolution was encouraged by the devil.
“Can you prove evolution? No. Can you prove creation? No. Can you use the intellect God has given you to decide whether something is logical or illogical,” added. Carson. “Yes, absolutely. It all comes down to ‘faith’ — and I don’t have enough to believe in evolution. I’m too logical!”
Carson said the consequences for accepting the theory of evolution would be an abandonment of the human moral compass.
“By believing we are the product of random acts, we eliminate morality and the basis of ethical behavior,” stated Carson. “For if there is no such thing as moral authority, you can do anything you want. You make everything relative, and there’s no reason for any of our higher values.”
Similarly, Carson said it was impossible to believe in God and evolution.
“Yes, in my education I had to learn evolutionary theories, and as a God-fearing Christian I wondered how to make God and evolution mesh,” said Carson. “The truth is that you can’t make them mesh — you have to choose one or the other.”

LOL If the Bible did not exist, Ben Carson would not save his son from drowning.

Apologies: Ben Carson says if evolution were true, he would have no reason to save his son from drowning.

"I love you too, Dad."--Ben Carson Jr.

Or you could have god telling you to kill your own son if it is true. Seems legit.

It is troubling how someone who can be so intelligent can otherwise have such a deep misunderstanding of science.

    Anyone can be brainwashed.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this plays out if he wins his party nomination.

I can see people attacking him big time in a presidential election, and then you will see conservatives play it as a racial attack because they have no clue what racism actually is.

That is the reason he is so popular. He's the one of the rare intellectuals that doesn't believe in evolution. It's not like he is a great speaker, or that he has proven that he is a great leader. He's the black friend who is also very smart that proves that Republicans aren't racist and anti-science.

I dispute the idea that doctors are automatically intellectual or even super-intelligent.

Yes, he had to do well in school and memorize many things, but that doesn't make him a thinker.

I teach a lot of pre-medical students, and I really like them for the most part. But you're not looking at a bunch of future Nobel laureates for the most part.

If you can't "reconcile" evolution and faith, then your faith is the size of a thimble. If you take every word of the bible literally, you should already be in jail for all sorts of behavior that would conflict with our current societal laws and norms.

mc, he doesn't open his eyes because evidence would flood in and crack his strange and narrow view of the universe.

Honestly hoping for a Rubio rally. I disagree with many of his takes, naturally, but he does strike me as more or less sane and, in many cases, open to looking at evidence and fact.

I'm surprised that no one has posted about this yet:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2015/...gn-cuts-salaries-lays-off-headquarters-staff/

Jeb is facing some real trouble with financing his campaign, something I never expected. He also has reacted to his poor performance so far with some really defensive quotes.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2015/10/24/jeb-bush-america-lot-cool-demonized.html

I've always said that Trump's success so far has been a huge gift to the Democrats, and that his blowhard act would eventually fade. But for him to still stay atop the polls while the establishment pick sinks? This is amazing.

In 2012 we laughed at the crazies and knew that the establishment would never let one of them win the nomination. Their guy, Romney, of course took it. We are still a year away from the election, but man, seeing the obvious establishment pick suffer a major campaign setback while the crazies continue to dominate is just... I don't know what to say. Is the establishment scared yet?

I mean, if Bush exits, (and that would be a huge shocker), what non-crazy candidates remain? Rubio? Fiorina?

Only Rubio has a shot at being elected. Fiorina represents everything normal people dislike. A person who made their money via a golden parachute. She lost billions of dollars in share holder value and still made out like a bandit.

That's a silly notion , you can't equate how pre-meds think with how doctors think. Only a fraction, the best of those pre-meds will get in. There are people in my class that have been to the top engineering schools and still find it difficult to conceptualize a lot of what we are taught. To eliminate people without the ability to reason you have the MCAT, probably the most difficult entrance aptitude exam out there. There are somethings in medicine that do require memorization...but that doesn't mean that you don't have to reason and think on your feet..constantly. Nurses or PAs could do everything if that was the case. Neurosurgery probably also ranks at the top of that list, anyone that actually thinks Carson is as stupid as he sounds should really take a deeper look. He's basically doing what any politician does---pandering. When it comes to the republican voter base, this means going in on a whole lot of stupid. Without catering to the prejudiced, outdated, anti-science dialogue you really have no chance to succeed in the GOP. He's a smart man who knows how to make the best of a situation .

Exactly. It's sad he's letting himself be used as a novelty by others.

It's a two-man race between Rubio and Bush now. How we get to which one could be very entertaining. If Bush never gains any traction, Rubio is a lock if he doesn't blow it.

At this moment in time, it appears all of the others are just waiting for Trump and Carson to falter instead of challenging them directly. I wonder how long this holding pattern will continue. I doubt it lasts much longer.

Carson seems pretty open minded about free speech stuff. He certainly has an interesting take on it with respect to college campuses.

Sure, my notion is silly if intended to be absolute for all doctors. But it's not silly in that a lot of doctors are not what anyone would call intellectual.

I believe Carson has said nutty things about science for a lot longer than he's been running for president, but you could still be right: he could just be pandering. I personally think he's serious about his (somewhat radical) take on scientific topics though. We may never know for sure.

    Cheers.

Replace 'interesting' with 'incredibly stupid'. So who will be these arbiters of what is deemed as 'extreme bias'?

The one thing I noticed about right wing nuts shouting 'liberal indoctrination' at college campuses is that actually teaching of opposing viewpoints such as Karl Marx's work is considered indoctrination. These professors are not teaching 'what OUGHT to happen." In fact, they make a clear distinction between 'what ought to happen' and 'what is'. When a college professor teaches Karl Marx, they also teach Adam Smith. And in neither instances do they state any 'oughts'. But for right wings nuts, that is 'liberal indoctrination'.

Ted N.C. Wilson, G.T Ng, Juan Rafael Prestol-Puesán, Guillermo E. Biaggi, Abner De Los Santos, Thomas L. Lemon, Geoffrey Gabriel Mbwana, and Artur A. Stele will be the final arbiters of what is what is deemed to be 'extreme bias'. Oh, and Rafael Cruz.
