malakas, you are the one attempting to discredit DMo's shooting ability and prove to us that he is not a better shooter than Terrence. You're jumping through all sorts of hoops to try to prove what is unproveable. All you have to do is watch video of the 2 players shooting a basketball for about 3 minutes to know DMo is the superior shooter. That's all you gotta do. But you ain't doing that. You're going through all sorts of contortions and twisting yourself into a pretzel in a vain attempt to prove that DMo is no better than Terrence at shooting a basketball. It's absurd.

when did I even mention Terrence Jones when it comes to IF DMO IS A GOOD SHOOTER?
I said that SVG is likely to go after him. Then in a separate post that had NOTHING TO DO WITH JONES I and others had a discussion about DMO.

If you think that the efficiency of a three pointer and shooting is the same when left wide open in the gym compared to when guarded then I dont' know what to say to you really. That would be not even worth a discussion.
So please with the "twisting and going through hoops etc"

It's extremely simple stuff everyone should be able to grasp.
Attention from defences is the absolutely MOST IMPORTANT context when judging the shooting abillity of someone.

Agreed that he will not shoot as high of a percentage when covered. But that means he will be covered, which means he is doing his job , though the fact that he is 7ft means that he shouldn't have to adjust his shot too much.

I understand the statistical argument is there for him not having done it yet. But out of all the players we could realistically get, he has the best profile to improve on his results and put the production on paper.

I understand your issue that he gets an unsustainable percentage of open and wide open shots . However, the comparison with Green is a good one because DMO has Harden, Lawson, and Ariza to generate that space. Harden and Lawson are threats to penetrate at will and Ariza is a respected 3 point threat. The other team cant cover everyone hes going to get his share of open shots and if he makes them at the clip he made 3's post all-star break >40% ... then he just has to be covered.

When evaluating what will happen this year you can look at gross production and the advanced stats , but you can also look at trends. The trend bodes well for DMO and while I understand why you are hesitant to say he is an adequate stretch 4. I feel that the trend, the eye test, and the situation around him point to DMO being able to fill the role of the stretch 4 quite nicely, especially for spurts.

The fact that DMO should also be above average defensively at the 4, and can create in the post further separates him from the above list. I'd take maybe 3 of those guys over DMO ( Ibaka , Bosh , Green ) This all assumes that he comes back healthy.

TLDR : You want him to prove it on paper before you say he is capable of doing it, I am a bit more optimistic due to the trend and the amount of shots he should still get that are considered open.

P.S this is actually a fairly substantive argument regarding DMO so thanks for using stats and rationality to back your points , and thanks for actually reading, understanding, and responding to mine.

Doesn't matter if Terrence is open or not when he is outside of 3 feet from the rim. He's gonna clang more shots than he makes in a game when he shoots the ball outside of finishing range.

You do this giant rant, you even include Draymond Green, and yet you don't seem to grasp the purpose of Green or Dmo in this?

Why does it even matter how well Dmo shoots when guarded? like for example, if he runs a pick and pop with harden, he will only shoot when harden gets trapped on the double and swings it to him when he's open, that's how a stretch 4 functions..... This is why he is of most value in the starting lineup, his role is to create one of two situations, a) the defender doubles/helps against the guard, he is now open, he gets the ball and shoots or b) his man stays on him and can't help against the guards, so now there's more spacing for said guard to operate, this is why he is better than Jones in the starting lineup, Jones doesn't help because his man will always hedge help because he's no threat from 3.

You're using these stats to make an argument that he can shoot well when open, but you're unsure if he'd be ok when covered, and you want him to be in a scenario where he's open less? Meanwhile for Jones it doesn't matter whether he's open or covered, he's just a bad shooter and has shown nothing otherwise.

The reason i find your position bizarre is you're using Draymond Green, who is basically universally said to best fit in golden state because this scenario plays itself over and over, it's so self evident in function that Steve Kerr felt fine to say this in an interview.

I don't think that DMO is a bad shooter. I think that it's premature to say that he's a GOOD shooter. But I am also optimistic about him.
However crowning him right now a good stretch 4 has no grounds.

No matter what, he must reach Millsap's levels at least of attempts and being guarded. As you said with the Rockets system, he will never be guarded as closely as let's say Bosh -unless of course he suddendly becomes a star on his own-.
What most people can't understand and I'm sure you will agree is that this unguarded levels is bad for the team. If he manages with more attempts during the RS to command more attention it will improve all the team because it will open the lanes-even if as it's expected his efficiency will show a drop-the extent of the drop depends on his abillity and his further development.
Yet again with your Jones obsession.
First of all even Green was left less unguarded than DMO.
It's not only the wide open percentage it's also the open percentage that is astounding high.
Yes I want him to be open less and you should as well because in contrast with the Warriors we don't have any splash bros in the team that both demand amazing attention from the defences. (Harden demands amazing attention ! but Ariza and Lawson do not when they shoot 3s).
Also in contrast to Green DMO took only 130 threes. Barnes took 210 and Green took 326!.
Also the post was on judging how good DMO was as 3point shooter and a stretch 4. The answer is not that good- at least not yet.

But got to say that you don't understand how spacing works if you want him to keep shooting so few threes and so much unguarded. Open less=> Helps spacing. Unless you reach bellow 2% at the echelon of Kobe Bryant, Lou Williams, Nick Young and Jamal Crawford which means horrible shot selection.

Also Draymond Green is universally said to fit with the Warriors not for his shooting abillity. But for his versatillity defensively and the variety of his skill set.

Terrence Jones proves to us once again, he's soft as bounty tissue paper and can't solidify himself as a legit starting PF. Yesterday's loss was bad and hard to watch. but like thread suggests: enough with all the Terrance Jones talk...I'm done talking about this guy.

Sorry Malakas, I love what you bring to the board, but DMO is hands down a better shooter than T Jones and its not even close. :(
