[Another day in America] John Henson racially profiled at jewelry store

I bet most people that claim not to ever stereotype are the same people that will not pump gas in the hood/ghetto especially at night.

 

i remember the days where there was no d&d forum and thinking it was unnecessary to have one. but now... well... dang, man. this is crazy!

 

profiling is normal. you can say you don't but we as humans act on impression as our first instinct for survival. it's ingrained in our brains and as every animal on the planet. when you see something as a threat, you get cautious. profiling and being racist is completely different.

I was planning to move out to Houston, but as a black male, I'm rethinking after reading this topic, is it still racist.

ST. FRANCIS, Wis. -- Milwaukee Bucks player John Henson said Tuesday that the owner of the Wisconsin jewelry store where he says employees racially profiled him apologized for what happened.

Henson said Thomas Dixon, owner of Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers in suburban Whitefish Bay, met with him at the team's training facility. Henson said employees refused to let him in the store, then called police Monday.

"He knew that shouldn't have happened," said Henson, who is black. "He'd had some prior incidents, but it still doesn't make it right for them to do what they did.

"It's a real issue today, but right now, I want to focus on the game tonight, and there will be time to talk about it later. I am going to do some things to raise awareness of situations like that and go from there."

From the report it sounds like they didn't even see Henson before locking him out. It says they locked the doors and called the cops after seeing the car. I think the whole situation was a perfect storm of:
1. The owner of the store being really, really paranoid (I mean, who wants to get mugged?).
2. The preemptive phone call (look back at paranoid).
3. Henson coming riiiight before the safety measure closing time the first visit.
4. The cops warning the store that the car may have been stolen.

The only real douche move was asking the cops to stay while he shopped but that just kinda coincides with the store people being paranoid.

 

Some people in this country don't have a built in simulation program to the facts but instead choose to be close minded assholes. A guy nearly seven feet tall with a baby face that's probably an athlete is threatening? LOL. Henson need to be worried about being the 'jacked' victim not the other way around.

 

Perhaps those racists posters don't live in Houston. And if they do, who cares? If you don't want to move to Houston over a few random people on the internet, then that's you. We have too much traffic anyway.

 

True that ,Face...traffic blows big time...and folks aint as laid back here like back in the day before Htown started blowing up. I mean I like progress...low unemployment rate...but there are just so many more people!!! LOL!!! And the roads just aren't growing/being repaired fast enough. And developers are taking out more forests to build more houses/apartments/condos because why?...more people are coming LOL!!!

And not all are racist here...so don't let a few folks ruin your plans. Chances are a tree is being cut down for you right now...

 

No matter where you go there will be a couple of racist idiots. And when you go online where there is no accountability you can expect idiots to be loud. Even in the most accepting liberal city I know of in SF/Berkeley, you can bet there's still a **** load of racist.

 

Sounds like Northern VA/DC/MD to me. I don't think you guys know the meaning of bad traffic until you live where I'm at or LA, Chicago, NY/NJ.

Seriously guys, getting gas in the hood isn't actually that dangerous. I do it all the time, nothing ever happens to me and I'm a skinny Asian guy. Just pick a well lighted one and you're good to go. Yes, I know where the hood is, telephone, southpark, deadend. When I used to smoke, I'd go into the hood and buy, never an incident. This is totally anecdotal obviously, but judge individuals by who they are individually not what they look like. Most people in the ghetto are actually honest, hard working people, just like anywhere else.

You guys act as if systematic racism does not exist and hasn't perpetuated all of this bigotry we see today.

1. Look into housing laws throughout the 20th century.
2. how the criminal justice system disproportionately punishes black or brown people and creates broken families.
3. How the GI bill that ushered in the greatest middle class we've seen didn't really help black soliders.
4. How the banks discriminated via lending.
5. Go look at school funding, look at test culture. look at how schools in poor schools can't even afford the prep books to help the kids pass those tests, thus cutting their funding to not be able to afford those books.

There is a ton of injustice, and John Henson's situation is just a small symptom of the overall bigger problem. But you guys can start by not being scared of black people, lol..

 

I've really enjoyed Clutchfans the past two years, but I am honestly really disappointed that the mods are tolerating (and thus, in my opinion, tacitly encouraging) this kind of ignorance outside the D&D. I don't think most of us come to the GARM or the Dish for hurtful things like this, but apparently it's going to go unchecked.

 

I'm sorry but some people just want to pretend this stuff doesn't exist. Don't make it hard for them and shatter their realities and imaginary worlds.

Houston is a multicultural city, but it's still pretty segregated. I'd guess most white people have moved out to the Woodlands or West I-10 area, and the more wealthy ones in the white enclaves -- Bellaire/West U/Memorial.

Asians have taken over Sugarland, Southwest/Alief. Mexicans throughout the East and 59 corridor around 610.

Black people are throughout the East/Southeast and Northeast. Lately in the southwest near chinatown and Alief.

It's really like any other large city, pretty segregated melting pot.
