[rquoter]The University of Houston has a top-25 ranked football team for the first time in four years and Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta still wants to see the Cougars in the Big 12.

"We belong playing Texas and TCU and Baylor," Fertitta, who chairs UH's board of regents, told the Chronicle's editorial board Tuesday afternoon. "That's who we belong playing."

Fertitta in February said the Legislature should pressure the presidents of the Big 12 schools to "step up" and let the University of Houston into the conference.

The Big 12 is currently made up of just 10 universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, Texas Tech, Baylor and Texas Christian University. The commissioner of the conference said in December it's unlikely for that to change.

But that hasn't kept Fertitta from pushing for it. On Tuesday, he said that "things are happening out there behind the scenes."

"It's not a dead issue," he said.

How confident is the billionaire restaurateur, amusement park operator and gambling mogul?

"I think there's a better than 50 percent chance in the next 24 to 36 months that the University of Houston is in a major conference," Fertitta said.

Don't know about the odds, but the timetable checks out.

Between UH, Cinci, UCF, and BYU, odds are 2 of those 4 teams will be in the P5 by the 2017-18 football season. Could be all 4, depending on how the dice come down.

They're picking an awful time to poop the bed, but if their crowds keep showing up, and greater Orlando keeps tuning in, it won't really matter.

So far though it's not looking good. They went from 36.5K against an FCS team to 26.5K against UConn in 4 weeks time. That's a staggering drop.

My criticism of UCF and USF alike was always that they were a paper tiger, and the moment the program hit any adversity they would fall apart. It happened to USF, now it's happening to UCF.

Will be interesting to see how they transition from O'Leary.

Moved up to #21 in AP poll. Memphis is at #18. If both of us are undefeated heading into that matchup, that game is gonna get crazy hype.

Don't see them doing gameday for OU/Baylor when they will do Gameday for TCU/Baylor.

    Oh snap! You're right.

Still think they choose UH/Memphis. Nice change of pace for the show.

Looks like the game against Vandy is gonna be a 6pm kickoff. Not sure if being on Halloween night will hurt our attendance. I'm still expecting to see 35k+ given we'll probably be undefeated heading into that game and ranked in the Top20.

Also, seems like we'll be wearing alternate jerseys that night. They aren't releasing any details of what these jerseys are gonna look like and the public shouldn't see them until the Coogs take the field.

So happy for the Coogs! Just great to see. I hope they find their way into the Big XII. Tons of momentum on different angles for that school right now.

I would loooove UH in the Big XII now that they are committed to growing the university in not just athletics but campus life and facilities etc.... The only question I see is what other team comes with them?

Also gotta ask, how will they replace Texas, OU and others once they abandon the dumpster fire that is the big XII.

Ehhh, people have talked about massive realignment for years, and it never came to fruition. Now the new TV deals are in play, so I doubt you see any more talk of that for several/many years.

I really liked the Halloween Uniforms they used a couple years ago. They may be using something similar as they are asking fans to wear black to the game.

#19 on ESPN. Memphis jumped us, which would normally piss me off, but it will help us down the road so I'm good with it. While our offense may not look like it has in the past, the true beauty of it is that we can throw or run on every play and that is the ultimate defensive nightmare. The only question is how we will do against a team that has elite athletes to either smother our receivers or track down Ward, but if Ward really runs 4.3 that speed translates even in the NFL and cannot be touched, making us a real threat to play to the championship. I believe.

A P5 team would overwhelm your lines.
