Memphis is fine bbq if all you want is pork. Of course, bbqing domestic pork is just about as difficult as bbqing chicken, meaning that anyone above the age of 15 or so can do it. It's all about the dry rub and (maybe) sauce. Amateur hour.
No they are open all day. Sit down restaurant. Located in the middle of west campus, lots of scenery too Dinner is actually busy. http://www.freedmensbar.com/
The fact that trip advisors could come up with 10 bbq joints and none in memphis, pretty much tells you something about the quality of that list. I guess you didn't bother to read the article below that list, here's an except: There's more than one bone of contention in the great finger-lickin' barbecue debate. Pork or beef? Vinegar- or tomato-based sauce? No sauce -- or maybe something mustard-based? Travel site TripAdvisor has waded into hotly contested territory with a list of the best BBQ restaurants in the United States. Not a one of the top 10 restaurants is in Tennessee, North Carolina or South Carolina. Blasphemy? Maybe. But hold on to your judgments; TripAdvisor also ranked the top 10 states for BBQ and all three of those smoking barbecue states make that list.
You said you doubted Franklin could even make a top ten list and I spent six seconds proving you wrong. You've never even been there have you? Troll.
I really hate this thinking about Rudy's. Essentially, yes it is sort of the Mcdonalds of the bbq industry, but in no way is Rudy's the quality that Mcdonalds is or any fast food joint, for that matter. Rudys still actually puts out decent bbq. If you want a Mcdondalds of the bbq world, go try some Dickey's with their liquid smoke flavor. Everybody needs to go to the original Rudys in San Antonio and give them a try. Way different than the new ones that pop up every other week.
Don't get me wrong, I would say the same thing about a list that didn't include Texas bbq on it. Texas bbq is the second greatest bbq in the world. But Memphis is king. Memphis bbq is legendary in fact, and Interstate BBQ is probably the best bbq joint in the world. But I still do love some texas bbq (hungry farmer is awesome) Also, Any list that doesn't include: carolina bbq, texas bbq, kansas city bbq and memphis bbq, is bogus.
isn't memphis bbq all about pork? texas does it right and is king of brisket, which is all that really matters.
