It's not just about you. I started looking at some of those other UT forums more after the TCU disaster, and that was been the prevailing belief - Mack Brown left this program with so little talent that we can't compete with top teams. Now that we just beat a Top Ten team, that argument can't be made, but I don't think you will hear much correcting all those prevailing ramblings. Also, you're an ignorant flip flopper.
I think UT started 8 Freshmen this year. By comparison OU is starting 1, TCU is starting 1, and Baylor is starting 0. We severely lacked experience and depth. We beat OU, because the young guys came through. The lack of consistency this year could be attributed to us having to start talented but inexperienced players, which is why we're 2-4 instead of 4-2. We got and developed new talent these past two year, but the lack of good "veterans" on this team is a big reason why we lose close games this year.
He's been unhealthy for a while, that's what happens with old animals. They could have nipped this in the bud 4 years ago and had one hell of a bbq, instead of wasting 1400 lbs of meat. What about the children? Won't someone please think about the children (shelters)?
I'm not sure these two things are incompatible. Look at the talent on the field - in theory, a good chunk of the top players on the team should be juniors and seniors from the Mack Brown era, but they aren't. If the team is losing due to a lack of depth and a lack of good juniors and seniors, that's on Mack - if the older players just suck, it's something that would be difficult for Charlie to fix in Year #2. That doesn't mean they can't pull upsets - any team can do that. And if it's about freshman and sophomores maturing, they should improve a lot over the course of the season - but they aren't likely to be consistently good and will probably have more TCU-like outings.
Good points. Like a lot of people, I like to expect the same output from the same inputs, but that doesn't always happen in sports. Case in point - the Rockets get blown out in back-to-back games against the Clippers, but then they win the series. Regardless of Mack's responsibility, I still grade Strong a 0 for the TCU game and a 100 for the OU game. That averages to a 50, which is still an F. To have my vote at the end of the season, he needs to not have anymore embarrassing blowouts - I'm looking at you, Baylor. Fortunately for Strong, I have no vote, so he can pretty much just ignore me!
There was a pretty good article on one of the blogs that looked at the last 5 recruiting classes and the attrition. The only part of the story I felt they missed was to look at how well they were regarded when recruited to how much they ended up contributing. That info is of course available on Rivals and ESPN. If we had been blown out again, I might have convinced myself to actually do that research. Nevertheless, I think you and wizkid hit the nail on the head in identifying where I am going to be disappointed with my previous outlook. That is the consistency element. Because they are young, they won't be consistent. Still, most everybody (not necessarily you two) was wrong in saying we did not have the talent to be competitive with good teams. I think the coaches need to be able to prevent 30-0 quarters in the future.
Agreed. It didn't help that Strong's exodus of players when he came on board included a lot of would be juniors and seniors, many of them being highly recruited offensive lineman.
How good is D'onta Foreman??? And he was only a 2 star recruit - Mack's, I believe. He just looks so good these days.
Weighing a loss against a TCU team that is currently ranked number 3 in the country, the same rank it held at the end of last year, equally against a win against a 10th ranked OU team is ridiculous. It ignores the context of the TCU game and the history and importance of the OU rivalry. Teams like TCU and Baylor, if you can't adjust to them, are going to blow you out. That's the whole point of high-octane, spread offenses. They're designed to hang half-a-hundred points on you and hope that you can only score 35. It's embarrassing, but I'm more worried about handling ISU, KU, and Tech and praying we sneak one by either KSU or WVU. If we have our six wins going in to the Baylor game, who cares what the score is at the end. Finishing 7-5 with a close loss to Baylor isn't going to impact recruiting much more than finishing 6-6 and losing to Baylor by 30 points. Either way, Charlie gets another year, but he needs to average 9 wins in his final two years if he expects to stay!
A winning over OU is likely a job saving win for Strong. I recalled that Mack said that you had to beat to A&M to save your job. Right now OU is equal to A&M.
Even if Mack said that, that does not make it true in the minds of alumni, other fans, and boosters. Mack was often criticized for the blowouts against OU. No one gave a crap about what we did against A&M, probably because we beat them way more times than we lost. Beating OU has been the only game that has really mattered in the grand scheme of things for a long time. It has nothing to do with A&M; beating A&M was (and still is) not on the same level as beating OU.
Maybe true - but at the end of the day, he kept losing to OU and beating A&M and managed to keep his job. It was only after he stopped playing A&M that he got fired.
Update on Nike deal: - Will likely be done by the end of the month. - UA rumored to offer 10 year/$220M but no official pitch was heard by UT. Apparently Patterson's actions during exclusive negotiation period with Nike was reason for this. - Nike contract is 10 years/$190M with big donations by Phil Knight and/or Kevin Durant to make up for difference. - Durant was a huge part of negotiations and will likely see KD brand all over basketball team and possible other sports.
KD for basketball would be big but rumored that you will see it for football. Maybe for pregame warmups, backpacks, etc...but having KD logo on football jersey doesn't make sense by any means.
They have Jordan football shoes. I can see it. Right now though, this early-on, Durant and his brand would have as much to gain from UT as UT would from Durant. That brand is in its infancy. Young athletes don't seem to mind the "lifestyle" in general. KD is a celebrity. If Adidas/Kanye had football shoes I'm sure it'd be a hit.
