Already getting great ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Definitely want to see because it's a Sci Fi which is my favorite genre, but the endorsements are great. Can't wait. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_martian/
The original story is much more thrilling and realistic than Gravity. The book suffused from being written as a serial, not very cohesive. Ridley Scott has brought in his gang of actors (90% of directing is casting) and black/whitewashed a few roles. But I think the rewrite as a screenplay, visuals of Scott and performance of MD will make this movie epic. Actual sci fi. Someone in this thread saying Interstellar is more scientific than this blows my mind. Interstellar didn't even get their title right. The title on this is perfect.
Just saw it. Good stuff. Much better than Gravity in terms of recent "survival in outer space" genre. A little bit below Interstellar IMO. I enjoyed the time aspect of Interstellar, but this is like MacGyver with swag. But who knows, after a second watching, I might rate it higher. Fun movie with humor and not too much "intense" moments, which I don't like. Spoiler I didn't read the novel, but was Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan) a significant character in the novel? He was practically useless in the movie. He was just... there... and smiled a lot. This movie could have been 1.5 hours longer and I wouldn't have realized it. Wish they could have shown more "science the s*** out of this planet" parts. Who cares about the rescue mission. 9/10
It's not really. Because he's not really alone. He communicates with Earth and many people are involved. It's more like stuck in a schitty place and have to macgyver his way through... with help of course. It's not depressing like Castaway, since it has humor throughout.
Yes. Yes you have. <img src="http://www.kap13.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/oTGT6i87XuoqTVveedL6HETK3k2.jpg" width="750"/>
I work in the Mission Control Center at JSC and I have to say, I really wish we had control rooms that look like this. I just love the style.
fantastic movie, Damon carried this movie and had his humor side of him from the Ocean's movies and Dogma. Wish there was a bit more Michael Pena and Jessica Chastain. my only nitpick is they made Johnson Space Center look like Mall of America....
The 3D looks good in the action sequences like on Mars or space, but other than that, it doesn't add much to the movie.
Saw the movie, have a few issues with it which I identify with the spoiler, though overall I'd give it a 8.5, good movie. Spoiler 1) Everyone was a little too young 2) So they ditch a mission which was supposed to last hundreds of days due to a storm they see in the last second, they had no planning for this? 3) They fail to orbit the planet to see if they can contact this guy they assume dead, no confirmation required other than an electronic reading about the suit, hmmm?
Spoiler 1. Yeah, but it's Hollywood so they need attractive, young white people to fill these roles. 2. I don't think they expected a storm of that magnitude. It picked up steam as it approached their area as they were tracking it. New info about Mars actually debukes the scientific accuracy of it now - Mars' atmosphere isn't thick enough for a windstorm to have much force. 3. It was the antenna that broke off and impaled Watney so they couldn't contact him and he couldn't contact NASA. Kinda worst-case scenario for him.
Thanks, guys! I guess I was expecting it to be something close to Gravity, but if essentially nothing is lost on 2D, I'm down for that.
Spoiler 2. The Ares 3 mission was only supposed to be around 31 days, they were at day 28 when the storm hit. I hate to be that "the book was better" guy, so I won't. The book obviously has more time to let the story breath; some stuff was just glossed over in the movie, but overall the spirit of the book is there and the few small changes are ok. I see the book almost as an extended account of what happened, lol. Overall this movie was great and I enjoyed it very much. Definitely go watch it if you can.
This is probably worth a thread...but has there ever been any high-profile movies that actually matched or exceeded the book it's based off of?
The Martian is more fun than Ex Machina, but Ex Machina was better science fiction. I liked both of those more than Interstellar, which I thought tried to be too conceptual. Plus the love dimension conquers all and the cyclical logic of the future making the wormhole to guide the past made no sense.
