going out: kj mcdaniels terrence jones 2nd round draft pick coming in: tristin thompson lebron james 1st round draft pick do your freaking job for once morey
8 ppg and 8 rpg just aren't max contract numbers. I'm all for getting your checks. If a team is willing to pay that 17 million Per(more than harden & curry) I'd be happy for him. That kind of salary should be allocated to players that make a bigger impact out there. i fully understand that he's a rebound demon but the market isn't on his side. No GM is willing to risk their employment by making Tristan Thompson the face of the franchise. His agent is attempting to anchor. He may end up with 13 or 14 per, which is probably what they wanted all along.
Just amazing. What a complete moron. TT is a good guy that is easy to cheer for but he has an idiot giving him advice. They are lucky the Cavs won't play hardball and reduce their multi-year offer.

The best leverage he can have now is this . Holdout until Varejao gets his yearly injury. Then come and ask the max to save the day. If that happened he would be the villain tho. One thing is for sure. If one of your players goes and signs with Rich Paul it's time to ship him out asap! He is delusional.

TT wouldn't be any more of a "villian" than he is now since there would be no real change of stance. Secondly, I don't think he believes the Cavs will give him a max contract during the season. If he misses camp, the pre-season and a number of regular season games, the relationship will be burnt to a crisp (if it isn't already).
He must believe it to have turned down such a huge deal. 5/80 reportedly. The Cavs gave Varejao the contract he wanted when he held out himself some years ago. The Cavs will not have a good start in the season because both Kyrie and Shumbert are out and Varejao (IF he's even in good condition after his achilles) is just an injury waiting to happen. If Shasha Kaun doesn't play well, he can try to blackmail them.
Actually no, back in 2008 Varejao a RFA & his agent wanted 10 million a year, the Cavs wouldn't budge, which lead to a holdout. Varejao held out till Dec and the cavs didnt blink. He finally settle by signing an offer sheet for 3 years 17 million with another team, which the cavs then matched. Not only did Varejao end up with much less than his demanded salary he lost over a month of salary in the process.
Dan Gilbert made his money with predatory loans. Do you think he's going give a small time agent any leverage.
Well, he's an RFA so I'm assuming that he cannot attend training camp or play in preseason games until he signs (with anyone). At this point he is officially holding out. He can choose to hold out for the entire year, but that wouldn't make sense because he would still be an RFA next year. And of course, the one year qualifying offer is no longer an option for him.
with k love there he's probably not even going to start for them.....should have just taken their offer from earlier in the summer
It did. But even if the Cavs withdrew the QO (they may not have), they can still sign him to a 1-year $6.9 million deal (or whatever the QO was).
Nice. Didn't remember that about the offersheet. Great post. They have. Yeah they are the only team to be able to sign him for a one year contract now , but they have no incentive to do so. They will lose his free agent rights. Meanwhile the longer he doesn't sign the more it gets prorated (I think that's the right word?). And more importantly contracts of young FA in their first extension have value in the back end of the contract. That's why the 3/50 was worse for the Cavs than what the 5/80 and why Paul has no leverage to make them give him a one year contract. Unless ofc everyone in the frontcourt gets injured. Which is likely but for later in the season, (January is the anual Varejao injury season).
Sure they do. If they sign him to a 1-year $6.8 million deal they'll save over $40 million in luxury tax and salary over a max or near max contract. No, they don't. They lose no free agent rights. They retain full Bird's rights to offer him a 5-year deal next summer. Paul has plenty of leverage and incentive to do what he's doing. 1. Paul works for Lebron. Lebron is the Cavs. So Paul essentially works for the Cavs. 2. If Paul gets TT to free agency next summer by having him play on the QO, then he can sit TT on Cleveland's cap for a lower cap hold...and he can then negotiate a 5-year contract for more money than TT would have gotten this summer. And he still helps Lebron and the Cavs by giving them more cap flexibility next summer. This is Paul working both sides of the table and hurting his client in the short run.
If they wanted to sign him to 6.8 they would have extended the QO deadline. They didn't. Secondly by signing to one year deal they make him an unrestricted FA. Not a RFA. They lose because then they have no right to match (right of first refusal) and he can leave and go wherever he wants. 1) If Lebron was so concerned why he signed before TT had signed 2) If Paul wanted the qo TT would have signed it. He didn't. The QO is now off the table. Because he didn't want to risk getting injured and secondly because TT would have to make 18 per to make up for the money he would lose, and apparently both he and his agent no matter what they say, didn't think it would be easy to get such a contract.
Just because they didn't extend the QO doesn't mean they don't want to sign him to a 1-year $6.8 million deal. (Or even less if the holdout extends into the regular season.) Yes, he is unrestricted next summer if he signs a 1-year deal. But nobody else can give him 5 years with 7.5% raises. And this is about money. Cleveland is better off to sign him to a 1-year $6.8 million deal this summer and then max TT out next summer than they are to sign him to a 5-year near max deal this summer. Because they save over $40 million in luxury tax and salary this next year while simultaneously giving TT more $$ on a 5-year deal next summer than he wants this summer....while still saving that $40+ million.
