What would you use the touch pad for text for?

Waiting for Microsoft's announcement before deciding on next phone. Pro 3 has been the best piece of no nonsense hardware I may have ever owned. If they have a Surface phone with a pen...done. Only need a handful of necessary apps anyway that Windows Store already has (health, PDF writer, Office, Calendar, Tasks).

Love the Note but Samsung's TouchWiz is just bad, bloaty and slow.

Doing the first level of the force touch thing into the keyboard turns it into like a laptop touchpad/trackpad, so you can move the cursor around your text. Press a little deeper and it turns on the highlighting, allowing you to select text also by moving around with your thumb. Makes manipulating text/cutting and pasting on a phone so much smoother.

    Example: http://t.co/l0oSJ0rHW8

I also like the ability to open links in small sample windows without leaving the app you're in, like email or messaging. It even works on forums, letting you see the OP without leaving the main page or going into the thread.

At one point I was sold on the Moto X Pure but it is huge. I'm actually looking for something with similar specs but smaller (5-5.2")

    Any recommendations, fellow clutchfans?

5X is only 32GB and I'm not big on Cloud.
Moto X Play is not coming to the US.

I have the Moto X Pure now and already miss the screen size of my Nexus 6. If having a brand name doesn't matter to you, you can try the ASUS Zenfone 2. It has a 5.5" screen, 4 GB of RAM, and SD slot up to 64 GB, although I read it can read up to 128 GB. The 16 GB version is on sale for $229.

Or if that's still a little too much screen for you, you can get the Huawei P8 Lite. Huawei is making the new Nexus 6P, so if they're good enough for Google, I'd try them out. I actually just bought this phone for my sister on Friday. She loves it so far, but she's not huge on tech, she just uses it for random internet browsing and texting/phone calls.

Honorable mention to the Alcatel One Touch Idol 3, and the LG G3 is on sale for $250 now too.

The Moto X Play is probably going to come to Verizon as the Droid Maxx 2. So if you're on Verizon you can get it. Also since Verizon phones are unlocked, you can buy it secondhand and just take it to TMobile or AT&T. You'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully they keep all of the default LTE bands.

Or if you happen to know someone in Canada, you can order and ship one there.

Unfortunately there aren't too many 5 inch phones in that market.

Best 5" and under phone I can think of is the Sony z5 compact.

Maybe the blackberry Priv. You might be willing to get a slightly larger phone if you have a hardware keyboard. Man I miss those things

Thanks for the quick feedback gentlemen.

Asus Zenphone 2, LG G3 - still falls under too big
Droid Maxx2 hopefully this is not CMDA only. Will wait and see.
    Huawei P8 - 720p screen only.

Sony Z5 might be a better fit then the Z5 compact.

What do you guys think about Moto X 2014? The 64GB can be had for $400, wondering if Motorola will lower price soon now that Moto X 2015 is out.

Just a note, CDMA only phones dont exist anymore. All Verizon phones have full GSM support now (because they need it for international roaming). You can take any new Verizon phone and put in a SIM from T-Mobile or AT&T.

The only thing Verizon can do is limit the LTE bands supported by the device. Fortunately there's a lot of overlap of LTE bands now. T-Mobile especially has most of its network on the same frequencies as Verizon now.

I've had my Moto X 2014 since Dec last year, works great, until about a month ago, my wifi/bluetooth radios have been inconsistent, I have the LG Watch R, at least 2-3 times a day, I have to restart my Bluetooth to read it. Wi-fi went horribly bad. I've hard reset it already, to no go, wanted to put a warranty replacement in since I'm upgrading to the Nexus 6P but I have to pay $25 to have them send it to me and send them my defective one. I have the 2nd "normal" option of me sending the device and have them send me a refurbed/replacement. That's my last straw with Motorola, going back to Nexus with my 6P preorder but not coming in till end of Oct.

As a former Verizon employee, warranty exchange is different if you are with a carrier, but I buy my phones unlocked and use it on Cricket.

Other than that hiccup, I liked the device. The only grip i have about it is the Moto add-ons it has, was ok for awhile, just didn't like using it anymore, I just disabled the software.

I really wanted the moto x 2014 until the last minute where they dropped that it would only have a 2300mah battery. That was a dealbreaker for me.

white 64GB nexus. shame that shipping for all doesn't start for a month, though google has been good about shipping early.

surprise? DxOMark has this rated as the second best smartphone camera ahead of ios/android flagships except the sg6/edge.

    Dave,
What is your opinion of the camera and the battery on the Moto X (2014)? How long would your battery last in one day worth of activity? what type of activity?

    Mike,

What are the cons for the Sony Xperia z5?

Here's a good video showing the uses of 3D touch currently on the 6S.

Looking forward to seeing even more once devs start incorporating it into their apps.

lol iphones finally incorporated a touch and hold feature. Then they call it 3D touch so it sounds new and inventive

Camera is average, doesn't stack up to the Samsung devices.

Battery has gotten worse over time. I'm an average user, but mostly on LTE since my work doesn't let use the wifi anymore. It was fine when I first got it, but seems like I have to charge it around 2-3pm on my 9-5pm schedule.

You are better off getting the 2015 version, especially since the starting price is at $399, if you don't care about expandable memory, then the $379 Nexus 5X is the way to go.

The camera on the 2014 was mediocre at best. The Nexus 6 had the same problem. Motorola has never been very good at cameras and it showed last year.

The Moto X 2015 actually took a nice step forward in terms of camera quality. It's still not in the same league as Samsung and Apple but its definitely good enough now to where I wont call it a negative like it was with past Motorola phones.

The problem with the Xperia Z5 is that no US carriers have come out and committed to selling it. T-Mobile went so far as to say that it would stop carrying Sony phones. Sony sales in the US have been terrible for years so I'm not shocked by this move even though the Xperia series has been decent. I think Sony might be out of luck when it comes to US sales.
