I wonder why Democrats prefer Catholics, Jews, Mormons, and Muslims to Evangelical Christians and Atheists. Seems that Mormons tend to go Republican at rates greater than Evangelical Christians, if the voting in Utah is any indication.
Not all Republicans hate atheists. As a matter of fact 45% of Republicans said they would be willing to vote for an atheist for president. That's more than I would have thought. Personally, I think Atheists are weird. Maybe even more weird than the religious fanatics.
Yes, I think they are weird. Agnosticism makes perfect sense, but I don't understand how someone can believe in atheism. The way I understand it, is that people who call themselves atheists are convinced there is no God. I don't know how they can come to that conclusion. Just because you don't believe in Christianity, or Islam, or any other known belief system, doesn't mean there may not be some other higher power of God out there yet to be discovered. To me, in many ways Atheism almost seems like a religion. The believers of Atheism have dug in their heels and refuse to believe in anything else. Just like many religious fanatics. Their minds seem to be forever closed.
Atheism seems weird TO ME. It may not be weird TO YOU. Also, weird isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just something that seems strange and unusual TO ME. I would be perfectly willing to vote for an Atheist, religious fanatic, or any other weird person, if I thought they would be a good President.
Even the most militant of atheists, example Richard Dawkins, don't say they are 100% convinced there is no God. I would say most self-professed atheists are more or less "agnostic" when it comes to a Deist God. There is also dispute on what the word agnostic means. It appears you are defining it as mere uncertainty, but that's really not the right definition. Rather, I'd say an agnostic is someone who either believes its not possible to know if there's a God, or is someone who doesn't lean towards one position or the other.
Just to add on to this post, here is Richard Dawkins speaking about a Deistic God: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgrEvEM_j1o He says he doesn't accept it, but he says a reasonable argument could be made for it and he could be convinced of it. This, to my mind, means he is essentially an agnostic with respect to such a God.
but, but, but the conservative media told me obama is a socialist muslim. how did he get elected twice??
I find everything about religion, and also atheism weird. It is true that I stated that Atheists may be even more weird than religious fanatics. The reason I say that is because most of the major religions seem be built around people who actually existed in history, and stories passed down through generations. There may be some fiction mixed into these stories, but there also seems to be some truth. In other words, I kinda get where the religious fanatics are coming from, but I have a harder time understanding atheism and where it comes from. As you can easily tell. I am not a religious scholar, nor am I all that knowledgable of atheism.
ok I see where you come from. For my experience the most atheists I have met are more fanatic than the other religious nuts. Because on top of everything they think that faith is a form of mental r****dation and everyone who believes in a deity is stupid.
