If you look at that Wizards team, Wall and Beal commanded the attention of defenses, which gave Ariza a lot of open 3s in the corner. I expect to see the same thing now with Harden and Lawson charging into the paint.

I think at least some of Ariza's dip last year had to do with the amount of minutes he was playing at the beginning of the season. Before the Brewer trade, Ariza averaged about 39 minutes per game and shot 33.6% from 3. After the Brewer trade, he averaged about 35 minutes per game and shot 36.1%. My opinion is if we get Ariza down into the 30-32 mpg range (which we should be able to do with KJ and Brewer sharing backup minutes), his 3 point shooting % should tick up into the high 30s just from more rest. With the addition of Lawson, don't be surprised if he's hitting in the low 40s.

Also, don't be surprised if Ariza is a little more selective in the shots he takes next year. He attempted 555 3s last year, good for 3rd in the NBA and ahead of Thompson, Green, Redick and Korver. He's not that caliber of shooter but IMO, he had to take that many because of the roster makeup and injuries. With Lawson and a healthier roster, Ariza will pass up more of those contested 3s in favor of moving the ball.

Overall, expect more ball movement and high shooting #s across the board.

Ariza already had open 3s last year. 41% of his threes were open.
From the the volume 3 point shooters he is the most left open by a wide margin. The next is Danny Green with almost 100 less attempts.

Awesome for Ariza. With the addition of another playmaker in Lawson we'll probably see that rate rise even more. If mchale plays Trev a few less minutes, he might be more consistent too.

I'm super excited about bringing Ty on as he makes our team that much more deadly. I think #3 is just the type of player we've been looking for. He'll complement our team well - especially Howard, ariza, brewer, and hopefully jones.

Several excellent comments here, excepting the "Putz," of course. One of the things that got me excited was seeing (again - I watched all the games) Donatas setting multiple screens to get guys open. The Spurs are masters of it, and Donuts clearly has both the intelligence and ability, being a legit 7 footer with unusual quickness for his size, to set those screens. I want to see a LOT of that this coming season, and from other players, as well. We're going to get a lot of open looks for shooters regardless, if we can just stay healthy, but more sophisticated offensive sets need to be in our playbook, and they need to be used. We have the personel, so there are no excuses not to expand our offensive options.

    Nice find, OP. :)-

there are sooo many articles and analysis of advanced stats coming out everyday that is mindblowing.
By seeing teh stats of the open shooters you can see who is the real good shooters and who is just ok (taking advantage ofthe situation). And who is a headcase and enjoys taking guarded shots (Lou and Smith esp lol).

For the record, even tho I am esp down on the guy Thornton has exceptional good advanced shooting stats.
On the other hand I wouldn't be that excited in general about the progress of DMO's 3pnt shooting. Because he's the third least respected shooter in the whole league.
