Where are the libertarian/conservatives to support this guy's Market given right to do this? If folks don't want to pay 5000% more they are "Free to Choose" to not buy as old Milton Friedman would say.
If you were dying and the pills you needed to live were to go up to $750 a tablet would ya just say "Oh well I'm not gonna buy in protest! I'll just die that'll teach um!!"", I doubt that you would, lol.
No wai. I'd get granny's meddycare to pay for it. After all it's funded with dirty money STOLEN from my hard earned paycheck.
D&D **** flinging aside, it's a government failure that they can't negotiate drug prices. It also sucks that the US has banned drug imports. Causes a false supply situation.
There is NO new research needed for toxoplasmosis therapy. Toxoplasmosis is not some of kind of new parasitic disease and the drugs have good results. Btw you and me probably have it. Just don't have symptoms. 60% of the population have it. I don't really now for immune repressed humans but there are other drugs and therapeutic systems available. However this practice is exclusively aiming for immune repressed people. They are the only ones who would pay so much and would need the drug. And the prevalence of toxoplasmosis is big enough that it will be a pretty common problem I imagine. I mean if your puppies are born blind or your dog dies I don't think many will have the money to pay so much. But people who are dying would. I hope if this goes through people can buy from europe or canada. It is a very cheap drug and common use. It is utterly insane what this guy is doing.
Wanted to post this before, but this guy is a POS, hedgefund $hitstain that is just a new poster boy for a silent problem. He isnt the only one that has marked up the value for a older drug... It has been happening, but he is the only one pompous enough to show boat it... Currently there is no generic available pyrimethamine...If your on medicaid, it will be paid by the govt...but pts on medicare, pvt insurance, or hospitalized patients will have to fork over some cost. It sucks for doctors to have to switch meds to less effective ones, but that is exactly that is gonna happen.
http://www.rawstory.com/2015/09/pri...ion-for-corporate-looting-fraud-and-stalking/ This guy is really more of a douche than originally suspected, which is kind of damn near impossible.
This drug treats a rare disease that I'm guessing isn't terribly profitable. Essentially, this douche found the perfect combination of necessity and lack of competition to be able to price gouge the **** out of the drug. I'm taking a course on weighing the personal demands of Ego VS. the ethical obligations of Eco in regards to entrepreneurship, and this guy is Exhibit A on what's wrong with our system today.
its used primarily for immuno-compromised individuals that have Toxoplasmosis (commonly seen as an AIDS secondary infection) but it also has been used for prophylaxis/treatment of some versions of Malaria.
Well you know I think less regulation would prevent this kind of stuff because of you know um Reagan or something.
Thanks. I see. The potential for profit for a 2nd maker doesn't justify the "start up cost" that needs to be invested to set up production in the first place. I wonder what exactly the math involved here is. Was selling at $13.50 a money losing proposition? What is the break-even point for this pill? In any case, as a matter of business, this is not necessarily an unethical action-- sort of like surge pricing by Uber. Supplies and demands and so on. The question, though, is whether, as a matter of policy, we want to allow this to happen or have some sort of government intervention (and if so, what intervention)?
Still waiting for the free marketers to come in and defend this guy's right to do this. If we allow government regulation of this, it's a slippery slope to communism, dontcha know.
somehow the righties will blame this on Obamacare. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if there's already articles linking the two together.
If the patent has expired, what exactly did he buy? If he's overcharging and doesn't own the rights, then it's just temporary arbitrage the market will soon correct.
it's not rare disease. It is very common but it's asymptomatic if you have a good immune system. However if you suddendly get immune compromised all bets are off. It also causes a number of abortions.
