what do these countries have in common? is the U.S. too big, too diverse (supposedly advantages) to be able to help poor people the ability to get on more even ground with education and other needed things to be able to raise their children better with less stress??

Political motives. This article is a really good read, actually. Recommend to check it out.

He was playing the game. When you are not a known name in the political sphere, you have to do something that will get yourself out there. It is different than other statements because it was at the very beginning for him.

Don't hate the player, hate the game ;)

The funniest thing about Cruz is when he was going around talking about Iran sending a nuke to explode up in the air near the United States coastline.

He's got some crazy notions that are as nutty as Trump or anyone else. The only thing that's nuttier is that plenty of Texans love him even though he's off his rocker.

I don't think he is off his rockers. I think he just panders really well.

The scariest thing about Cruz is that unlike Trump his brand of crazy is not an act.

Quinnipiac University released a national poll Thursday showing that while Trump is leading the Republican Party nationally, he is polling poorly with black Americans in the general election.

    The poll found:

When asked "Would you say that Donald Trump cares about the needs and problems of people like you or not?" 92% of black people said no.

52% of black people said Trump does not have strong leadership qualities.

73% of black people said Trump is not strong or trustworthy.

79% of black people said they have an unfavorable view of Trump.

When asked "If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Hillary Clinton the Democrat and Donald Trump the Republican, for whom would you vote?" 3% percent said they'd vote for Trump.

When asked "If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Hillary Clinton the Democrat, Jeb Bush the Republican, and Donald Trump running as an independent, for whom would you vote?" 5% of black people said they'd vote for Trump.

When asked "If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Joe Biden the Democrat and Donald Trump the Republican, for whom would you vote?" 2% said they'd vote for Trump.

I don't think that is true. When politicians stick to straight talking points, it is a calculated persona we see. We will never know though short of a lie detector test.

In fairness, Bernie Sanders never veers from his talking points either. I guess in politics, leaders can never acknowledge the greyness of issues without conceding them.

I disagree. While not as blatant as Huckabee, I feel like Cruz has been running for book deals, speaking tours and board memberships since the moment he arrived in the Senate. The Senate is a chamber with 200+ years of institutional memory and tradition, all of which Cruz has flaunted in his pursuit of the spotlight. The base may love it, but the establishment hates it.

The RNC knows there is no way a candidate like Ted Cruz can win. Mitt Romney couldn't win because of, in part, hard-right positions he had to take during the primaries and subsequent backtracking to appeal to the entire country. Cruz won't back down from his ledge. That would be turning off the golden faucet.

Cruz is a Harvard Law graduate who clerked for William Rehnquist. He's very, very smart. Unfortunately, to me, he comes of as nothing but calculating and playing a role he knows is very lucrative: firebrand.

It's not that he's calculating, it's that he's extremely rehearsed.

He has a memorized response to any question that might be asked of him. It comes from his training as a world class parliamentary debater and appellate lawyer, where you can be interrupted at any moment and put on the spot to answer questions. It really annoys reporters, who enjoy putting their subjects "on the spot" with questions they themselves have rehearsed.

This doesn't bother me, but it bothers alot of people, who perceive a rehearsed response as insincere.

I'm with you. His act isn't difficult to see through. People with rose-colored glasses miss the obvious. Ted Cruz is smart enough to capitalize and milk it to the last drop. He's one of the most shameless self-promoters the Senate has seen for a while (and the Senate is loaded with self-promoters).

If he has a workable chance, he'll take it.

My problem with Cruz is not that he rehearse. It's not even his positions (which I generally disagree with). It's lies. Lies and deception and untruth is something that I just can't accept for someone running for office (yes, that eliminate lots of folks). Trump as horrible as he is, > Cruz in my book.

If you think this interview is convincing of anything positive about Mr. Cruz you were already on the nuttery train. His defence of marriage discrimination, "it's a matter for the states", is a dodge. The States do administer marriage, it's just that the Supreme Court does not allow the majority to limit the rights of the minority. He says it denies the will of the people when what he wants is to deny equal rights to people who are different from the majority. I'm pretty sure this is proven case law for constitutional scholars after the issues of slavery and mixed race marriages.

He wants to be Ronald Reagan but then states the people around the country think the GOP gives in too much to mr. Obama. The facts are Mr. Reagan did work across the aisle and approved legislation with Democratic input. The current GOP tactics of stonewalling every possible compromise, even to the point of withholding on the necessary business of government is unprecedented. We can't even appoint judges or bureau heads.

He's just debating for boneheaded points of view, the ones that I think he sees as a platform to maintain his status on the political scene, not truly to advance the lives of the people.

And good god, look at that posture, listen to that voice, that's every East Texas Baptist preacher I have ever known. I think sanctimonious is the term.
