It'll be a lot better in a few days when Brett Kollmann does a film breakdown and gives Texans fans a better opinion than they can manage on their own.
No doubt, and that's probably why he checked down as often as he did...but that still doesnt explain his inaccuracy or his lack of touch. And when he was being pressured/blitzed, leaving less people in coverage, he was 0-16. The offense failing wasnt all his fault...but with the things he could control, he failed, just as much as the OLine failed, just as much as OB failed in game planning, etc... We could also say that the run game never took off because Mallett was terrible from the start...it works both ways. We started off passing an abnormally high amount of times...maybe if Mallett did some good work, it would have opened up the run game. Either way, Mallett was not good.
Let me ask you, how do you explain the 40+ pass attempts where Mallett was not pressured and the OLine was not to blame? Do you have an answer for that or do you just want to act like it was all on the OLine?
Take away the attempts where he was pressured and you've got like 32 remaining pass attempts, take away the 8 dropped passes (that number coming from anyone who really watched the game including Bill O'Brien himself) and you're down to 24 pass attempts where the O line didn't allow instant pressure and the receivers didn't fail to catch a ball that hit them in the hands. There were 27 receptions. Mallett simply isn't a good enough QB to overcome awful O line play, no running game, and 8 dropped passes. Not many QB's are good enough to overcome that and even fewer are good enough to overcome all of that while passing the ball 58 times in a game with no overtime. When you are passing over 70% of the time, defenses pin their ears back and key in on the pass making it even more difficult than it otherwise would be.
Of course, I'll admit that isn't really fair given that some of the drops could have happened on plays the O line failed as well. Either way, the numbers look a lot better when you look to see "why" things happened instead of focusing entirely on "what" happened.
I understand why things happened. But, just to correct your numbers, he had 42 pass attempts where he wasn't pressured, not 32. And since when is going 0-16 acceptable when pressured? In any case, everyone understands that he was pressured…but when he wasn't pressured (40+ times), he still failed to make things happen. The dumb penalties from the Panthers did more for the Texans than Ryan Mallett did for the Texans. This doesn't mean that Mallett sucks forever…it just means he sucked for week 2. Is there a chance he turns it around, of course there is. But, there is an equal chance that he doesn't. It's all up in the air and the Texans have no back up plan, which is where OB should be getting the blame.
Andrew Luck got more from his O line and from his running game and played worse while being asked to do less. I think you seriously underestimate the effects of a tragically poor O line and no run game on the QB.
For all the blame assessment that’s been going on, whether it’s injuries to OLine, Foster, etc. Has anyone thought about why we never seem to overcome injuries? Dallas is 2-0 and they lost arguably their 2 best players last week and this week. When was the last time the Texans had a headline where they overcame injuries to win? Even when the team was at their best, one injury to their MLB and suddenly the wheels fall off. Yes, I know Cushing was awesome, but he wasn’t exactly Ray Lewis. We lost because our team's mediocre even with everyone healthy, and not good when there are injuries. That said, our division sucks like hell so even mediocrity may be enough to be in the playoff hunt. Thank god for low standards I guess. Put this team in a real division and we might as well start scouting for next year's QB prospects now.
They did win a division and playoff game with a 3rd string QB... that was probably the best Texans team ever, in terms of overall talent, so they have overcome some injuries before when the talent is there.
dallas has gone-8-8, even worse, various years when suffering injuries. they're 2-0 now because the injuries happened when they were already up in the game. You just can't replace a talent like brown, then you have to replace newton since he's moved down to position. Usually you carry one swing tackle. we're basically compensating for 4 positions on that line in less than a week's notice. In the carolina game, their edge rushers were in our backfield almost as soon as the ball was snapped. It kind of stomps the whole game plan.
Indeed. For that one season, there was enough talent to overcome injuries. Every other season it's the same excuse. If only Player X was healthy, Player Y was healthy. Honestly I'm tired of excuses. If the team is good enough, they should be able to overcome all injuries except maybe the QB. The fact that we're using this excuse just shows how little talent we have.
Man just watched some of the game film, Cam was just as bad as Mallett except for the two deep throws that resulted in 6 both times. Bouye, and then JJo(just straight up got burned)...Bouye bites way too often on double moves...The Panthers came up with an excellent scheme to neutralize JJ and Clowney (Two lineman on Watt, and a 2 running back set on Clowney)...They gambled that the other players would not make a difference and they were right. They really shouldve forced Watt to move around more, heck put him inside next to Wilfork for a few plays (and have them twist stunt... Yes, Mallett shouldve been better, and the OLine surprisingly held well for most passing downs...Their real issue was that their was NO running. Combine a lack of vision with poor blocking, and it resulted in Mallett throwing the ball for 70% of the plays...Cant make the game easier if your gonna rely on an unproven QB to bail you out...really poor game planning by Godsey..
No, I don't. Our pass blocking wasn't bad...our run blocking was terrible. Yes, being able to run would help tremendously. However, that still doesn't justify inaccurate throws or lack of touch.
Yup, every single NFL team has injuries week in and week out. We played a Panthers defense that had two of their best defensive players out with injury...and we still couldn't do anything. Our depth sucks, and thats where our poor drafting is hurting us.
Both our run blocking and pass blocking were terrible, you just might not have noticed as much because Mallett gets the ball out so quickly that defenses get very little time to get to the QB. If we ran Hoyer out there he'd have been sacked at least 5 or 6 times minimum.
Just one play But a bad time for it <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Trai Turner destroys JJ Watt on the Ginn TD cc: <a href="https://twitter.com/DCWLN">@DCWLN</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/macwfnz">@macwfnz</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/Kroeger">@Kroeger</a> <a href="http://t.co/iqGZxGdoHf">pic.twitter.com/iqGZxGdoHf</a></p>— Tom Bonner (@misterbonner) <a href="https://twitter.com/misterbonner/status/646324701510389760">September 22, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Delusional fan. Watt had a crazy good bull rush going there and Turner gets lucky Watt trips over the tackle's left leg.
Not sure why you think its the cool thing to blame EVERYTHING on the OLine. They pass protected well...it doesn't matter that Mallett gets the ball out quick...so does Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. When he throws the ball within a pocket, with no pressure, and misfires, that's on him, not the OLine. Sure, Hoyer would hold it for two seconds longer and get sacked, but that's a different issue.
