The Texans are not using the existing field turf for colleges and high schools that is at NRG now. They have order an upgraded Field Turf solution. Supposedly, it will be ready in time for week 3.

Would you support the Texans renovating the Astrodome and moving there so the Rodeo could have NRG all to themselves?
I don't know what would happen in that vote honestly. The rodeo certainly draws more people. As for which one is worth more to the city financially, it's really not up for debate. You can just pretend it is though if it makes you happy.
Well, the Rodeo also lasts 3 weeks. The Texans play 8 home games. If the Texans played 20 home games a year, I think they'd bring in more people/money. So yeah, just because of how many events they actually hold, the Rodeo is going to do well. But I think if you asked people to choose between the Rodeo and the Texans, more people would choose the Texans.
The Texans are the more profitable and more valuable entity. They will win ANY battle against the rodeo in any form. If the NFL or Texans ever had to evict the rodeo for whatever reason, I don't see them losing that fight. As it is, the NCAA has been able to adjust/manipulate rodeo dates to ensure they're out of there well in time for their events.
Texans dropped from 5th to 7th most valueable NFL teams this year which is still pretty awesome. If this team starts winning on a consistent basis they could move up to just under the Cowboys and Patriots. If we have to share then share but fix the damn field!!!
From what I've read, they will use the field they currently own. I'm guessing the field is a blank slate (no lines and/or logos inserted) which means they'll be painted on (a fairly standard practice in multi-use fields). I've spoke to my friends still in the industry. No one can get a field manufactured and installed in 1 week. Best case scenario is that they have 2 tufting machines running 24 hours for 3 days to get the field tufted. Then it needs 1 day for coating. Then, it has to ship (at least 1 day). Once it arrives, they unload and can start placing rolls (a standard sized football field is made of about 36 rolls of turf. They'll get rolled out and seamed (for speed, I'll assume they're gluing). Once that's done, they'll start the in-lays (hash marks, numbers, arrows, media lines, etc). Only lines that can be tufted in are the yard lines, side lines/coaches boxes, so every thing else is cut in. That is very time consuming. Finally, they'll install the infill. On a standard installation, that is a week long process in and of itself. For next week, it will be the field they already have there. Maybe for the home game after they can have a new field. The turf they have is fine, temporarily. Should they decide to go permanently to turf, there are systems out there that are simply better in regards to playability, durability, and how they look from the stands and on tv.
The turf they have isn't already in a NCAA paint scheme? They paint it for every single game to accommodate high school and college?
Turf paint is designed to be easy to remove. It goes on just the same as if they were chalking a grass field. High school and college fields are the same layout. The only difference would be if they decide to do end zone and/or midfield logos.
They should just keep the A&M/ASU logos... would be fitting and more cost effective if this is indeed "temporary" :grin:
RE: the Rodeo I think some of you are not understanding, most likely due to us all being sports fans on this site, just how many people in Houston couldn't care less about sports in general. We are sports fans, so our lives are heavily involved with it. We watch it on TV. We go to games. We go to sports bars. Sports is everywhere for us. There are a LOT of people who don't care. We have 6 million people in the metro, and I assure you more of them don't care than do. The rodeo had a turnstile attendance of 2.4 million visitors this year. 1.4 million were paid attendance to the rodeo events themselves. No one is pushing the rodeo aside unless the rodeo allows it, I assure you. It's the reason they worked with the county and McNair in the building of NRG Stadium in the first place. I would choose football too. But the rodeo brings the cash to the county, for sure. Try finding a hotel in the area or even downtown that isn't filled with rodeo judges, officials, travelling stock show people, etc. during that month. They aren't going anywhere.
Its a hypothetical situation... and the NFL >>>> every other entertainment form in this nation, despite people "caring less" about sports. Pretty sure, an NFL team could get a billion dollar stadium built on their own... not sure the rodeo could do that on their own.
Both times NRG held NCAA tournament games, the rodeo ended before the NCAA games. They had short changeover times, but no rodeo dates were manipulated that I'm aware of, since the rodeo events had already ended. It was just a matter of getting the dirt out and the floor changed over.
Correct... and those dates were set specifically at those times to account for the NCAA tournament (some years they're out before the sweet 16, other years its been the final four). One is set in stone years in advance... the other can be manipulated year to year. I'm all for Houston pride, but the rodeo will always be trumped by national events if needed (and in this country, the NFL is basically the national past-time). And if the NFL wants a "permanent" grass field solution, the rodeo will basically have to fall in line.
