Has anybody rooted their Chromecast successfully? I am thinking of getting one but I like full control over all of my devices.
I don't know what this means somebody tell me: VLC Is Getting Chromecast Support http://gizmodo.com/vlc-is-getting-chromecast-support-1686311413 Google's Chromecast is cheap and awesome and it's about to get even better. The latest changelog posted by VLC—which mentions a "Chromecast output module"—suggests that the Swiss Army-knife of media players will finally get Chrome support. If that means what we think it means, you'll soon be able to cast any video from the VLC player. That's handy because Chromecast historically isn't great a playing local (coughpirated) video. It's not an entirely revolutionary feature; there are a number of extensions that already let you expand the Chromecast's capabilities. Dragging files into a Chrome browser was another way of hacking the dongle's limitations. Still, VLC is a great player and official Chromecast support is more than welcome. We won't know how well it'll all work until the feature shows up for real, but with VLC reappearing in the iOS App Store, however, it seems like the everybody's favorite media player is finally getting more, umm, play. Download it now, if you haven't already. [Github via PocketLint]
It just means it got a little easier to stream files stored locally on your PC to the Chromecast. Previously you would have to use the Chrome browser to play that file, instead of a dedicated video player like VLC. Or you would have a separate server, like Plex, that would play it for you.
If they can retain the ability to play just about any file and be able to cast it, then it's a definite win. I have to wonder if that ability is kept, does that mean the phone is doing most of the transcoding to cast to the chromecast?
Be sure to get your free $6 Google Play credit, and your free digital copy of the original X-Men movie if you have Chromecast. It was for Valentines Day, so I'm not sure when it expires, but I got it yesterday. You need to have access to your Chromecast, and be on the same WiFi network. link
chromecast 2.0 coming out soon. still using mine frequently and more so once the rockets season begins.
Not really using the Chromecast at all anymore. Have a smart Vizio in the master bedroom that has Plex app. Got a Firestick for $25 on Amazon Prime Day for the kiddo's room, also with Plex.
I'm still enjoying my Chromecast, I typically use it for showbox etc.... I'm curious about the 2.0 version, and the new Valve (steam) device has me interested too.
Mine still gets use in the bedroom. Only because I've been too lazy to take the TV down and run an additional HDMI cable through the wall. Guess I'll get around to it once the new Apple TV drops.
