I like the Mallett trade and have no issues with that. Again, the Hoyer situation is the only thing that has confused me regarding OB's plan...the decision to bring him in to begin with...and the decision to start him... Then the decision to bench him after Both of those things make me question the path he has chosen. Having said that, I think Mallett has just as much chance to fail as he does to succeed, but at least we wont know until he gets his fair shot. And Im not only looking for a guy that doesnt have a low floor...Im just not necessarily holding out all hope for a guy with a ridiculously high ceiling. Like Ive said, Im okay with going to war with a Joe Flacco. He's never going to suck, he'll never be elite, but he can win with the right pieces. The Texans have the right pieces...just need to find a Joe Flacco. And until they find that guy, they wont be serious contenders...so do whatever it takes to find that guy. The sooner you find him, the sooner you'll be relevant. Here's to Mallet being my Joe Flacco.
One of the best examples of a team with a project QB working out is the Cowboys with Romo. He was an undrafted free agent and was in their system for years before breaking into the lineup. The QB's at the time were less than spectacular. Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Drew Hensen and Drew Bledsoe. He was undrafted in 2003 and didn't start until 2006. I have hope that Mallet or Savage can develop into a real QB for the Texans.
And if he doesn't work out, do you know who the most Flacco/Schlub-Like QB who is out there... and will likely be available for the right price? Jimmy freakin G! (I could see Belichick giving him up for a Schaub-Like package, much like he did with Cassell, especially if Brady shows zero signs of slowing down nor wanting to hang it up).
If the Pats trade him this off-season, they'll probably get a little more than what they drafted him for (i.e. - Schaub-Like return). Gets accentuated if he actually gets some real game-action (and does well). If they wait 2-3 more years, probably a lot less (of course by that point, Brady is probably close to being done).
I'd like the Texans to call the Bills and ask about EJ Manuel. He has the talent but is still raw. I think O'Brien could mold him into something decent.
And yet people here are upset he wasn't taken last year. Wouldn't you be happy to get more of a "known" commodity at this point? (presuming Mallett is terrible?) Jimmy G as of now is worth more than the Jimmy G low 2nd round pick, and the Patriots know that and should probably act on that if they don't have much use for him. (just like the Falcons knew that when they traded Schaub while they still had Vick).
Uh, no. What talent is that exactly? At the end of the day, would much rather have the guy who is studying under one of the all-time greats, and has been exposed to high-pressure playoff situations (even only if in terms of practice/game-prep). Again, presuming we need to go that direction.
Athletic, strong arm, actually has decent touch on his passes. I know he looked bad against the Texans last year but he does have some skills you can work with. Not saying he's the answer but he is someone (realistic) the Texans should do their due diligence on this off season along with Garoppolo and RGIII.
Actually, we are the kind of team that is more likely to get this kind of trade done. You look around the league : about 20 teams whose basically set on QB and committed big money for their starter, unless for a team which will have serious injury to their QB, like Arizona with Palmer, otherwise they are less likely will do a trade. That leave you the suck ass teams : likely will be TB, Jac, Ten, Min, Oak, which all has very young QB and probably will stick with them for another year or so, and in worse case, if they are really suck, they will have a high draft pick to take a high prospect also. The remaining team that actually will take the like of Jimmy G could be : - the Jets, the Browns, the Bills (assuming the new QB does not work out), the Skins, the Texans. Out of these 5 teams, the Bills likely will have a better chance of their current guy and pass the offer. while the other 3 teams also probably will have a worse record than the Texans hence they will rather go to draft a new QB. So there you go - the reality of stucking at the middle and most likely trade for this kind of QB of Jimmy G and hope him to be the next Schuab.
Btw, can you win in this league with the kind of QB like Schaub or Faccol? Yes you can. If you will have the right team around them. The Ravens had an elite defense dynasty for over a decade and with some luck, they can win it all. But they will require good management and good talent evaluation, which is currently the Texans lack of. To some extend, this portion could have a greater effect than an elite QB, take the case of Elways and Marino as example and right now the situation Luck at. Its more easier for a just above average QB with great team to win the SB than a great QB with below average management and coaching around him.
O'B should call the Jets and offer double their money back for Fitz seeing as how they gave him away after signing Hoyer.
No, but it tells you how irrelevant training camp can be as an indicator for regular season performance.
I think Hoyer's main negative is hidden in camp. The main thing I see with the guy is he crumbles under pressure. Except...in training camp and scrimmage there is never any actual pressure. He can wear his little red jersey and know that no one is going to come after him really. If they get close they'll let off, tap him on the chest and count it as a sack. With that in the back of his mind he's probably able to sling the ball around and look a lot better than he is.
Big difference between getting him last year and seeing what he's worth…over playing a QB carousel for 3 years and then seeing what Jimmy G is worth. I would have liked to get Jimmy G last year…but if we have to try him out in a few years, that doesn't get me too excited, and in fact, that would mean BOB is terrible at what he does.
