I figured he would still put Hoyer back in there I am really surprised how this thing turned out. It also shows me how stubborn he was to think he could make a players out of noddle armed Hoyer. If things are even you take the guy with the arm. That arm can do things and put the ball in places the other guy can't just because the weak armed qb has to be perfect to succeed. Now all we need is a LG,RB, and some LB/S who can cover to be a good team.
I believe it all boils down to this. Hoyer has the brains to run the complicated offense OB wants to run. OB hoped his seemingly suspect talent would be hidden behind the complexities of the offense. If Hoyer could just manage the game, the offense would score the points. Mallet appears to be the opposite. He has the talent, but from what was said during camp, wasn’t able to grasp the subtle nuances of OB’s offense. So OB gave the nod to the man who could run his offense. But now that Hoyer wasn’t able to live up to his role as a game manager, OB will have to dial back his offense and go with the only QB who seems to have any real talent.
Had nothing to do with Hoyer . Reporter ask him a really stupid question, something like , " did you make it a key point to get the ball out quick ? " It's at the tail end of this clip http://www.houstontexans.com/tv-med..._to_home/022f422a-8dc4-4d1f-909f-42ef3636fcba
Yeah, Tanya and Donny misunderstood BOB's words, and Raven explained it pretty well. "It's NOT like we're gonna go 8 games of not being very good" was said after saying "you're not on a short leash, but...." So yeah, he gave a caveat to not being on a short leash. Hoyer had to "earn it everyday," and he didn't. Hoyer himself said like he let the entire franchise down, and I concur. And I agree with Studogg's assessment. It wasn't a short leash as much as Hoyer failing so badly.
It's like O'Brien said: we're all on a short leash. It's not like the Texans sans JJ Watt have any kind of track record of success where we can cut them some slack because we know things will eventually turn around. We don't.
This is what I thought he said : "we're all on a short leash." Yet somehow, everyone in the media keeps saying that he said Hoyer wasn't on a short leash. Iust have missed that part.
As I see it, this should settle things once and for all about Mallet: he either does well or it's back to ye olde drawing board...again. Most curious to see what happens if Mallet struggles - do they go back to Hoyer (aka noodlearm) or does BoB goes the yo-yo route bouncing between the two? That would be the kiss of death as far as the season goes IMO although truth be told, I was pretty much meh about both Hoyer & Mallet before the season started and nothing much has happened to change my opinion of both QBs.
The drawing board: http://walterfootball.com/draft2016QB.php not too exciting really, especially because the team is too good to get the first QB taken. The best pick might be an OSU QB that doesn't even start. For better or worse we are kinda 'all in' on Mallet. maybe enough to give him a Aikman like loooooong leash.
I think we still need a QB too.. HOPING I am wrong, but Im not just going to take QB off the list because a guy who was "relatively even" with Hoyer, is now playing.
The problem is that Hoyer was OB's guy. We trade away Fitz and focus on bringing Hoyer into the mix...and from all accounts, Hoyer was the guy that always had the edge. After all these months of Hoyer being the guy that OB wanted...what was it, 7-8 drives with Hoyer in the first game of the season and then he gets benched? Granted, the majority of people here wanted Mallett over Hoyer from the start...but, it's pretty scary that after all these months of OB choosing Hoyer, he's ready to flip the switch that quickly. That does make me lose some confidence in his QB evaluation skills. It concerns me that he didnt like any QBs in the first 3 rounds of the 2014 draft. Im concerned that he wont like anyone in the 2016 draft either. Hopefully, Mallett will come through and OB wont need to like anyone in the 2016 draft.
Maybe Hoyer does well in camp/ practice to earn the spot in week 1 and mallet sucks in practice but does well in a real game. Bob should have waited until after the last game of the preseason to determine who will be the starting QB. Instead he gave the edge to Hoyer because he was consistent in practice since both guys play well in the first 2 preseason game battling it out. Should have let them battle it out until the final preseason game
Then he should have taken him, either with the 2nd round pick or traded up. You dont sit back and hope a QB (possible franchise QB) you like falls into your lap. If he truly liked Jimmy G, then that's a major choke job by OB for not doing something about it. Again, goes back to my urgency issue with getting a QB. If you like someone, do whatever the **** needs to be done to get him. In this case, it didnt take much, so that makes it even worse. Mix this with the Hoyer fiasco, and we are seeing a not so happy trend with the QB situation under OB.
No one said he thought Jimmy G was a "possible franchise QB", just that BOB liked him. He also liked Savage. From what it looks like, that was a pretty terrible QB class and the Texans did the right thing by not wading out into it or reaching on any of those guys.
One thing you have to keep in mind: the minute any coach pulls the trigger on his guy, the clock starts... BOB knows this; he's being, I think, diligent. Does he want to go down with Teddy Bridgewater, or Jimmy Garapolo, or....? The Fitz/Mallett/Hoyer's of the world buy him some time until he can find the guy he's willing to stake his career on.
Not saying he liked him "that" much. We've already discussed this. Jimmy G or Derek Carr is no more a potential franchise QB than Matt Schaub was (who I'd take in a heartbeat right now). Hell, they're not far off from where Ryan Mallett is now. If your goal is to eventually find somebody "special" or much better than what they've previously had, you shouldn't be losing sleep for missing out on these guys. The 2014 QB draft class, as is, looks to be nothing special... I wouldn't say passing on all of them was a major choke job. Again, passing on one draft class does not warrant your reaction as it is.... you're basically throwing a tantrum over the Carr pick not working out, the Schaub aquisition having mixed results, and where we are now with Hoyer/Mallett... BOB won't reach for somebody out of the desperation that has infected some Texans fans.
I don't see how going 6-10 or 8-8 or whatever delays the clock starting on a coach. Lots of coaches get fired because they simply never find a QB. But that said, BOB inherited a team with a LOT of talent - he shouldn't want to delay the clock. I'd want to try to start winning when I have an Arian Foster in the backfield, a pair of great receivers, a HOF type defensive end anchoring the defense, etc. It's not like BOB took over Tampa Bay or Oakland or a team like that. He had a team that went 12-4 a year earlier and who's downfall was centered on the QB position. If he drafts a QB this year and then we assume 2016 and 2017 are development years, who knows what kind of talent will be on the team in 2018. 4 years of mediocrity may not earn him a 5th to see his plan through, and 2 of those years will have been wasted with transition QBs.
i blame the nfl. they should have something similar to the mlb draft with a twist. Like if in 2014, you didn't find any of the players worthy of the pick just carry it over to next season, a slot down. this year's draft: Mariotto and KJ =) just an example. who knows if mariotto is b.o.b type of guy either and clowney can still be an elite player at his position.
