Maybe the reason Mallet didn't win the job in the first place is because he's younger and more immature than Hoyer. But maybe we need an immature gunslinger out there right now to give us a spark.
I feel like OB said that so that Hoyer doesnt feel too much pressure...but to also let him know that the starter job isnt his indefinitely.
I'm sorry, I could have sworn O'brien said in the HK clip, "So I'm going to name Brian the starter..." and mention consistency as the defacto reason. Unless you have another clip that said otherwise. And in case you are referring to last year, one game against the lowly Browns and a crappy game the next week doesn't earn you to be the incumbent.
A summary of McLame's thoughts: baylor, baylor, baylor, baylor, baylor, doughnut, baylor, baylor, be nice to Texan's PR team, baylor, baylor, pork rinds
People need to remember exactly what it was BO'B said. He said he wouldn't go 8 games (as Tania mentions above). That doesn't mean he gets 8 games to figure things out, or even 6 games or even 1 full game. It was just an arbitrary time that Bill threw out there that he KNEW they couldn't live with. He did say that Hoyer wouldn't be on a "short leash" and that clearly seems to be untrue now, but he also told the guy he had to earn it every day. What Hoyer did on that field Sunday was the opposite of earning it. He looked unprepared, seemed to get rattled when the pocket started to collapse. I think what Bill saw was enough for him to realize, for this season anyway, that Hoyer wasn't going to be able to perform. Put me in the camp that is glad Bill was willing to correct his mistake quickly, instead of appearing to be dishonest with his player (or at least lacking of faith).
Also one more point worth mentioning...Ryan Mallett obviously took the decision pretty hard of not being named the starter for season. But Bill made it perfectly clear that this is a results oriented business and he would be willing to yank either player if they werent getting the job done. While being named the starter should be exciting for Mallett, he has a ton of pressure to perform out there. I really hope that it can be done...not sure if he will, but it could be a nice story.
I get a kick out of the short leash argument. It wasn't a short leash - Hoyer just doused it with gasoline and lit it on fire. The film study had to be horrific. From my view I could see several befuddling moments where he looked dazed and confused with receivers running open. Can't imagine how bad it looked from coaches tape. A short leash would have been a mediocre performance in which we lost and then getting pulled. Hoyer wasn't mediocre on sunday.
All along, I've gotten the feeling that O'Brien sees potential in Mallett, or something in Mallett, but doesn't feel that he's ready, for whatever reason. Hence, the QB battle through preseason (motivation), telling him he needs to be ready (motivation), essentially giving hoyer the edge for the starter's job, etc. Mallett has kind of proved that, to a point. Not having the maturity to pull himself when hurt (I don't blame him to an extent), and costing his team a playoff spot certainly proved that. Oversleeping the day after being named backup proved that. Now, it's Mallett's time to earn it. If true, it's his chance of a lifetime. Much like last year in Cleveland. I was at the game, so I didn't get the TV perspective, but from the nosebleeds, it certainly looked like Mallett was ready that game. He was professional, poised, and efficient. He moved the offense decisively, and quickly. It was exactly what I dream of O'Brien's offense being. I still don't understand what O'Brien had with Hoyer. I think he just liked him more. Wanted to give him more of a chance to prove himself because he's older (not by much). Now that it's Mallett, I get the feeling that it could be Mallett for a while. I'm not talking seasons, plural, but I'm talking for the rest of the season. It's time to see what Mallett has. It's too bad it took a game to get to this. It should have happened after last year. You need to see what you have in him. I applaud the switch. I trust O'Brien. I'm fine with whatever he decides. I think the real question is, what do you do if Mallett plays horribly? You've got to stick with him, I would think. At least for half the year. You can't be flip flopping. O'Brien knows this. It's Mallett time.
i hope we win and he has a nice game. not because the week goes by smoother but because I also want to hear a michael irvin sermon on his maaaan ryyyaaan mallet!
No you are correct. It makes the coaching staff look like they don't know what they are doing. I was certain Hoyer would get 3 games guaranteed based on the entire training camp and film from pdevious seasons. If Mallet does very well no one will remember he didn't start game one. However if Mallet struggles we will have a serious issue on our hands because the players will have no confidence in their QB and eventually the coaching staff. At this point they even need a freaking mediocre warm body to man the position.
Just got a lot more excited for Sunday. It's been a good day so far, OL depth added, Martin traded.....and Mallet Time!
