This offense is no where near where BOB wants it to be. I get that the QB position is the major glaring need but we have to roll with what we got no matter if it's mallett or hoyer. Do you guys realize that Washington had a 100 yard game? Nuk had 2 TDs and 98 yards. All with horrible offensive line play basically no running game and no threat at the tight end position. This team is still a work in progress and will continue to be. We still have a lot of work to do to get things the way Obrien wants them offensively. But once we get everything to Obrien standards we will be a force to be reckoned with. But as of right now we have to roll with what we got.

BoB seems of the opinion that the QB needs a certain level of IQ to run his system. Which is why we had Fitz and Hoyer this year. Was reading up on how Whisenhunt tailored his game plan to Mariota's strengths (and we can thank Wade for JJs ascendence as he said he finally realized to let him play his way instead of within the system. That's when his gaudy numbers began)

So is he just unwilling to tailor his system to the strengths of a QB who doesn't exactly fit the mold? I like BoB but this Hoyer decision looked funky from the beginning and even funkier now.

BOB wants a versatile offense... one that can run the ball ad nauseum on any given game, or one that can air it out if the matchups are favorable.

Even more importantly, he needs a cohesive unit that can get to the line fast in a no-huddle fashion, change tempo, and just make things decidedly unpredictable for the opposing defense (even if there's not all that much talent on the Texans side of the ball).

A QB can have all the arm strength and quick release in the world... but he's also going to have to be able to alter the protection schemes, know the appropriate audible packages when they go hurry-up, be able to adjust routes at the line depending on where the DB's are playing.

Then again, you can have a "smart" QB all you want... and if he panics or doesn't make the common-sense play, and most importantly makes mistakes, you're not going to go very far either.

The Texans have wasted their time and ours getting Hoyer this off-season. Now we'll be sitting through another waste of a season.
    Bill O'brien sucks.

Yes please. Mallet starting gives us confidence and hope. I feel a lot better about the game when he's leading the offense with or without Foster.

When Mallett starts on Sunday, can we just delete this entire thread?

OB has been very careful with what he's said about his QBs - but the coded langaue whenever he talks about Hoyer v. Mallett would seem to indicate that Mallett simply isn't Hoyer's equal in terms of running the team. All that "consistency" and "trust" talk... Mallett likely flashes and has his moments - but I'm guessing he makes far more misreads, bad throws and overall mistakes than Hoyer. It's also probably why Mallett will look good in small doses; likely easier to expose the more he plays.

    I don't think its happening.

LZ has a source (same one who broke the AJ to Indy story) that said he expects Arian Foster by week 3, and unless Hoyer is a complete disaster, he's also going to get at least the next 2 weeks to figure this out.

I don't get it. Other than the game where he was hurt, Mallet has played well when given a chance.

I think Mallet gives off a dumbass vibe to O'Brien in practices/film room and he just doesn't trust him. You can see from how Mallet spoke to Rick Smith how one could get that impression.

I wish this upcoming week was a home game so Hoyer would get booed out of the building, and O'Brien would be even more pressured to bench the scrub.

That's one game - unless you're counting mop-up duty Sunday?

Can we please give the coaches *a little* credit... Bill O'Brien is not stupid; he spends a lot of time with these guys - he knows them much better than *we* know them. If he thinks Ryan Mallett is stupid, trust me, it's because Ryan Mallett *is* stupid, not because he gives off a vibe.

I wish mallet just started last game because I dont think its a good look playing musical quarterbacks but I also dont want hoyer to suck a fat one again on Sunday. Tough decision and Im glad Im not making it but mallet to hopkins did seem magical

We still win with Hoyer this week.

His two costly turnovers last week just happened to occur at the worst possible field position, both times. If he turned the ball over anywhere else on the field, we would have won.

Plus, our defense needs to force turnovers too. Regardless of QB, you wont win many games when your defense cant force a TO.

And as much as I would prefer Mallett to Hoyer, I think the unemotional approach would be to start Hoyer again for this week. If he has another rough outing, then Mallett gets his chance.

take away the turnovers all you want, but he looked miserable regardless. I counted three passes he threw that should have been pick sixes. As much as Nuk tried to take responsibility for the first INT (and he was out of position and lazy on the play), the ball was still a good 3 feet to the left of the window.

He continually mis-read the d, turned down the open pass, and let his mind get in his way. I refuse to believe we win that game if he simply doesn't turn the ball over twice.

Oh did I mention his fumble wasn't even from the blind side? Dude took Schaubing to a new level. He only needed to helicopter in the air to rewrite history books.

Will he still be in the game to start sunday? yeah.
will he be better than in week 1? pretty hard not too.
is it still the wrong choice? yeah. this is the first time I've openly questioned O'B

Rez, it doesn't matter if Hoyer can beat a mediocre team. Their defense will give Hoyer fits. You may be overconfident.

This is the first time most of us have questioned BoB. He is crapping the bed.

How often do teams pick lesser QB's to start when there is a better option? We can hope all we want, but Bill O'Brien has shown to have a weak spot for Hoyer, he'll give him every opportunity possible.

He actually did look good on the TD drive though... a little "too" good compared to the rest of the game (and it wasn't at a point where the Chiefs were laying back in coverage).

So, either BOB found a weak spot in the defense and decided to exploit it (which the Chiefs promptly re-adjusted)... or Hoyer's problems are mostly mental and he's bipolar... or its a combination of all of the above and we still don't know what he "truly" is in this system till he plays more.

looked mental to me. which is probably what happened down the stretch last year to him.
