What's your fascination with waiting to pounce on a QB when they're "cant miss" prospects or talents? With your mindset, you'd be rolling Hoyer out there for the next 10 years. Was Aaron Rodgers a "once in a lifetime" prospect? Russell Wilson? Big Ben? Tony Romo? There are about 15 QBs in the NFL today that would allow the Texans to win 10-12 games this season. It's not that difficult to make some moves or attempts to get into a position to get a decent QB. He doesn't have to be all-world.
Yes, he's the street free agent. He got pushed on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, XSF is a walking/out-of-shape/injured corpse.
Had we pounced on Bortles or Teddy Bridgewater, we'd have essentially just rolled a first round pick version of Hoyer out there....
Where have I ever said never draft a QB? I said you don't just blindly take somebody with the hope that they "get it"... and with the lack of any stand-out QB in the 2014 draft so-far, can you really say they "missed" on anybody? Hell, you pretty much answered your own question by naming a late 1st round pick that sat for 3 years, a 3rd round former baseball player, a mid first round pick that won a SB in his rookie year, and undrafted free agent (who also sat) in your list of possible QB's that would be palatable.... those guys weren't just "lets put them in and see what we have" types.... they each had to work their ass off (or in the case of Ben, have a college pedigree and body-type that blew away anything from the 2014 draft) to make it in this league. QB "development" is nonexistent in this plug/play/instant gratification world. Again, you can either take the approach of "lets take anybody... as long as we try!", or you can actually wait till a QB presents itself that is worthy trying for. I've yet to see the guy that BOB completely missed on.
He needs to do whatever it takes to get on the field to help this team. The Texans are getting negligible production from their 2014 draft class. A draft where they had the first pick in every round. Sickening.
Never said he could be that guy. I just hope they passed him up for football reasons and not because he was david's little brother.
Maybe...maybe not. The difference in talent in all these guys is so marginal. Coaching, scheme, talent at supporting positions is more important than anything else. If David Carr had the proper coaching and support, he would have had a much, much better career as a Texan. It wasn't a lack of talent...it was a lack of everything else.
The question is if you'd be happy watching a bust QB week after week so long as the Texans "tried". Bortles, Bridgewater, Winston, Carr, and Manziel all looked terrible this week. Mariota looked really good against the worst team in the NFL. What QB are you suggesting that the Texans should have picked?
Just because a Derek Carr doesn't work out in Oakland, doesn't mean he wouldn't have worked out somewhere else. If Big Ben was thrown into David Carr's situation, he may have never become who he is today. But, at some point, you do need to take a risk for the most important position on the field. And if OB is really as good as he thinks he is in developing QBs, then that's all the more reason to use a 2nd round pick on Jimmy G or Carr. What exactly does bringing in Hoyer achieve? Is that our long term solution? Wouldn't you rather give up XSF right now for a chance to see what BOB could do with Jimmy G? Yes, BOB has missed...because having someone like Garoppolo on the roster, coached by OB, with the talents supporting cast...would give us much better potential than what we are facing right now. Instead, the Texans were hoping that Jimmy would fall into their laps in the 3rd round, rather than going and getting someone. And that's the point, there is no urgency to find a QB.
Again, talent level between these guys is marginal. Coaching, supporting cast, offensive play calling, etc...all have a bigger role in the development of players. If OB is such a QB stud, then he could do better with them than he can with Hoyer.
We've seen more out of Mallett than we have out of Garoppolo, yet that's the guy we need? I don't doubt that we'd have drafted him if he dropped to us, but c'mon man. I blame BOB for starting Hoyer as much as anyone but having fantasies about rookie QB's that look like crap on their teams becoming amazing if they were here is a bit over the top no?
And the talent level between guys like that and Mallett is marginal, so why aren't you happy with that? You lust over the current Pats backup, why not the one before that who has actually shown something as a starter?

You must have missed the recent interview where DAVID (not Derek) Carr admits he didn't work as hard as he should have... didn't realize what it would actually take to succeed in the NFL. (and I was always on the opposite side of the argument in the past). Yes, there are hosts of situations where the QB is failed by the team... which is why I usually don't support just throwing a young guy in unless he's head and shoulders above where most typical rookies are. And I also re-iterate that the 2014 Texans has needs everywhere... not just at QB... so not going to fault them for trying to shore up other needed positions if a QB didn't blow them away. And as far as your "urgency" issue... again, you're basically saying the same thing over and over again, and just getting mad they didn't use a 2nd round pick on a QB last year. That's your urgency.... we get it.... I'd just like to see something "more" from these guys we missed out on before we throw BOB under the bus for not trading up to get them.
I'm fine with Mallett having his shot...but putting all your eggs in that is not smart. But, given the current situation, I'm totally good with seeing if Mallett is that guy.
I just think freaking out about not drafting a QB, when there isn't any QB that the Texans could have taken in the last 2 years that looks worth a damn is a bit crazy. Having one of those guys riding the bench wouldn't make the team any better than it is now.
I don't need the interview to know that about Carr...he wasn't a film room guy from the beginning. Did you just start following the team? And I never mentioned anything about BOB having to trade up to get a QB. But, bringing Hoyer in or drafting a QB in the 4th round...those are pointless moves that do nothing for the franchise.
If the Texans didn't like QBs to draft, then say that Mallett is the starter and go from there. Hoyer shouldn't have ever been signed. That's on BOB.
