Hoyer looked bad like we knew he would. At least with Mallet you saw sparks. BOB can't ride with his earlier bad decision. Mallet has to start and grow into the job win or lose.
I think Mallett should start against the Panthers, but not sure if it's that easy of a decision. What happens if Mallett starts and absolutely sucks? Do we just go back to Hoyer for game 3? That would look incredibly stupid. You cant put the team in a situation where you are constantly going back and forth, unable to stick to one starter. One guy should theoretically get more than 60 minutes of game action before he is completely demoted. In the end, it would be nice to have Mallett announced as the starter, but I can also understand going with Hoyer for one more week. I like that Mallett makes quick decisions with the ball and fires it out with velocity. I just hope that when he starts, he doesnt F up, because then we're even more ****ed. #Fitzmagic
Hoyer should not have seen the field in the second half. The game was still winnable when halftime ended.
What happens when BOB starts Mallet game 2 and is a complete bomb like Hoyer was in game 1? Are we going to play QB musical chairs this whole season? From all the events that happened leading up to Hoyer being named the starting QB, I would be surprised if Hoyer was benched for game 2. We're in for a long season again.
The thing is, because of Mallett's overall attitude, and propensity to get rid of the ball quickly, I can live with his failures. Ultimately, he might be a steaming pile, but at least he's going to fail assertively. Hoyer just doesn't have the mental make-up to be a starting QB in the NFL.
So... Apparently everyone in the organization agrees that Hoyer's interception last night was actually on Hopkins blowing the play. Apparently it was a designed spot play and Hoyer got the ball to the spot but Hopkins messed up. If that is true, I don't see BOB making a switch at this point. The players and the coaches really like Hoyer, so it will take more than 3 quarters of struggles that really wouldn't have been as bad without that pick (still bad) to make him pull the plug. Once he pulls the plug he can't just go back so he has to really let this play out. Unless the tape shows him something really horrible on Hoyer, I think he'll stick with Hoyer and let him fail for at least another week.
Trust me, I'm not defending him. Just pointing out that if they think there is an excuse on that play then that may save his job.
i have to agree with everyone that says hoyer will get to start the next game. i don't like it, but we have to take it unfortunately.
i remember during the picksixfest season they also said then rookie d-hop ran a wrong route leading to an interception. we all know how that turned out.
agreed. O'Brien has to much invested in him, Hoyer is his favorite so he'll get one more shot. With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if an ineffective Hoywer was pulled at half-time in favor of mallett. If that happens, then Mallett is the starter going forward
Doesn't matter if it's a blown play, still a dumbass pass that a decent QB should never make. It was a blind pass near the Texans own end zone..that's Matt Schaub at his worst.
I was certain that Hoyer would get 3-4 games. However after yesterday BOB did not give Hoyer the vote of confidence. I still think that Hoyer goes in game 2 but it was interesting.
Being status quo is what got this organization sputtering without any real direction. Staying with Hoyer is just status quo. Hoyer has no real upside or future as the answer at QB. Nobody knows if Mallet has a future either but they need to go ahead and give him a real shot at this point. Mallet at least looks to have better upside then Hoyer. I'm sick of this organization being overly caution with the most important position on the team. Coach Bob needs to man up and admit to his premature anointing of Hoyer as the starter and ride with Mallet and see what you have in him. Everyone knows what Hoyer brings to the table. People and sports media implying that coach lost a lot of respect with the quick hook of Hoyer yesterday, I feel the hook wasn't quick enough. I gained respect for him that he had the balls to finally go in another direction when the team was playing like ****. Hoyer ceiling is a decent backup. Need to stop farting around and see what they have in Mallet. Going with Mallet I feel is a high risk, high reward move that a sputtering franchise needs to take.
Yeah it was interesting that BOB didn't say something like "Look guys it was wasn't working out there today obviously, that's on me. We got to coach better, put these guys in a better position to succeed. However, Hoyer is our QB. It wasn't working out there today and that's my fault. We've just got to get better everyday, but Hoyer is our QB for Carolina and we'll just see from there. We've just got execute and show consistency every day."
Even if Hopkins ran the correct route, the db dropped in zone. Speaking to the PI's earlier in the game. Those balls were under thrown, and both could have been td's.
Have we seen anything to suggest the players (read: WRs) like Hoyer? There was nothing on Hard Knocks that gave me the impression. I don't remember reading any striking quotes about Hoyer from any of our guys --- although I'm sure you can dig and find one or two guys giving props since he was named our starter. Looking at their style, I would think WRs would much prefer Mallett. Gets the ball to them quicker and seems more willing to take chances down field.
There are other factors to be considered, our QB almost exclusive went to our WR as the target to throw to because the simple fact is : our RB and TE suck. So it really doesnt matter if its Hoyer or Mallet, they will often need to thtow into coverage and picks are inevitable.
